I own a 98 Malibu ( 3.1L) v6 with over 300,000 miles and it is in excellent shape because I took care of it, did all the scheduled maintenance. Love everything about the car, smooth, quiet, comfortable inside, nice acceleration, easy to work on.

You probably bought this car second hand after the engine was replaced as this car was the worst car I every other person buying a new Malibu owner have ever had (I bought in 98). The coolant leaked damaging the head gasket costing $1800 in year 2000. This happened to all 98 Malibu's and only GM recalled many many years later when 99% of owners complained and had to pay the bill them selves. GM screwed everybody! Google it, it's all over the internet how bad this was. Google malibu coolant leaked into head gasket or any other words and google will show you this was a disaster for 98 owners! I know people that have 2003 models that didn't have this problem and there Malibu's have lasted to this day. The 2003 that was a really good car.

I only use KZfaq for music and randomly came across this; this will likely be the first and only time I ever comment negatively on a video. I don't think I could disagree more with a review if my life depended on it. I've owned two of these and I'm 28. First one I bought at 16 years old as my first car ('98 deep purple) and second at 21 ('03 tan with the plastic hub caps). Both great automobiles and both were great for Ohio winters. 1) what are you comparing this automobile against as a baseline and 2) did you ever perform maintenance on that car ever? Like once...did you ever take it to a shop? 3) do you work for Ford?

My grandma owns a ‘98 in oxford white with a v6 and she bought it on 8/28/1998 new and it only has 115k miles and looks brand new after a wash. Yet I understand the one your reviewing definitely has seen better days compared to ours. I’m a mustang owner and I even love the old malibu. I think it’s the latest 2020 that’s the worst not the ‘98 but that’s my opinion. Other than that good review on this particular one because I definitely agree that one you reviewed has really been through the ringer

I'm disliking the video because your not a very good presenter. You keep saying the steering on the car is very bad when yet you felt safe enough to let go of the wheel many times, and while you're driving you did little correcting on the wheel. I just loved how you said if it starts up, and it started right up on first try. Point is it's a 20 year old car been through the ringer and never let you down even during your so called car review that really sucked. Next time you do a car review try and pick a really bad brand and make that has always had problems. There have been lots of Malibu's made and many still on the road to date. Yes some had bad problems however most run good. Fact is the car looks like crap in and out but started right up probably has never been maintained like it should have been. No it's not a fast car and it cant take corners all that well mpg are not the best, but it's a family car and if maintained properly will last a long time. I bet the car still runs but you won't tell the truth if it does. I'm not saying all of this because I own one. You need to do more research and actually drive the car like you really relied upon it to get there and back and not just around the block

You complain about how bad the front looks. The grill and lights were one of the issues that make the car look bad. The Toyota Camry from this year looked very similar, and was not any better. Most sedans from 1998 looked like the front of the Malibu. I did own a 1999 Malibu, and ended up trading it in for a brand new Impala LS because I wanted more room, a cruise control, and a cd player. The Impala was more comfortable to sit in on vacation drives. The Impala also glided down the highway on long drives. The Impala for some reason also delivered better fuel economy.

I think the title should say “my” or “this” because it looks like it’s owners treated it like crap, talking about condition. Like you said design is an opinion. The Cutlass GLS or Malibu GLS has more options like power windows and alloy wheels, makes a difference in it seeming like a beater or a good old car

Haha, I had a 1998 Malibu LS it went through a lot from the previous owners who didnt take care of it. I tried to make it last but I ended having my engine completely die. However that thing was heavy and it did very well on a foot of snow without snow tires and chains I was impressed. It was my first car and it died in 2014. I strangely miss it if I had the moeney i would have swapped the engine and did some modifications but oh well.

I have a malibu from 99. The biggest issue with it was the faulty anti theft feature that would refuse to start the car, causing me to have to wait around 10 minutes to try again. It was kept in good condition so other than that, it is quite good for a 24 year old car.

You have to be specific if it’s the 4 cylinder or V6. The V6 has a lot more hp and torque than the other, so you can’t really complain about it being slow, because anyone would have the choice to find a faster one, since they’re still so common today. Edit: sorry didn’t get to the part where you mentioned that. The 2002 one has upgraded power and torque.

I had a 1997 malibu with a 3.1 v6, it was fast as hell, 155 horsepower at 195 ft lbs of torque. I ran straight piped exhaust and a cold air intake on it that made it way more powerfull. I put 350,000 miles on till the transmission finally went out. It was a tank. Hands down one of the best cars of the 90s. These car had only one issue and that was the lower intake gasket has to be replaced every 100,000 miles. The dexcool coolant causes the gasket to break down sooner. That is the only issue with the 3.1 v6 and the only issue with the car.
@ericknoblauch9195
@ericknoblauch9195 4 ай бұрын
Dexcool had nothing to do with the lower intake gasket failing. My father had the 3.1 V-6 in his Cavalier long before the Dexcool came out. His engine used the old green antifreeze. He still had to replace the lower intake gasket twice.

@ericknoblauch9195 general motors had a lawsuit pending over it. and a recall on it. 1997 was the first year they switched to dexcool in the 3.1 motors and they had cars coming back in at 30,000 miles. i know this because my cousin worked at chevrolet and they used to scam customers on it. and tell them it was a head gasket issue. the gaskets had to be re designed with a newer material due to the corosive nature of the dexcool. you can look all this up online.

Your not much of an enthusiast when you know in Alberta it’s extremely cold for the winters. Which automatically is harder on any vehicle, I just bought a 98’ impala n yeah it’s old, it also has 365K which that alone speaks volumes considering not many brands make it 200K. You stated the obvious which is where you should have left it, “this car is not properly maintained” it also needs a tuneup with proper inflation tires. You didn’t even go over any of the highlights on why chevy even came out with this design. In reality i you have no idea what you are talking about, all you did was talk from a biased point of view which is solely yours. Quite frankly you have zero merit on the conversation of vehicles. To be honest the 90’s sucked at almost all brands. It’s kin of the awkward stage when you’re 16 trying to grow a moustache much like you are trying to do now!!!!

We owned one of these pieces of garbage. Constant brake issues, mechanical problems, and cheapest interior I've ever sat it. The inside door handle actually came off while closing the door. After owning Toyota's and Honda's I hated it so much.

why anyone would even consider a chevy when there are such great cars like toyotas and hondas is beyond me. Bought my first Honda last year and haven't regretted. After being a lifelong gm customer I can safely say I'm never going back.

@@Skyman08 It's how companies like GM get you, cheap initial purchase price and my family wasn't looking to spend too much. In hindsight it was a big mistake considering the repairs that were required when it wasn't even that old, and how many more years of useful life a car like a Corolla or a Civic would have given us. Lesson learned.
