The recipe to have a reliable one of this: when the transmission breaks throw it in the trash and manual swap it (it’s a bolt on and tune thing), when the turbos go replace them with bigger ones, when the brakes and rotors turn to shit just replace them with a big brake kit and when the suspensions breaks just install coilovers. You’ll spend half as much as you would trying to replace the OEM stuff and you’ll end up with an absolute monster. The 6 speed swap make it an animal. To this day I still miss it.

Had a 2000 A6 with the 4.2L V8. Absolutely loved that car, I still miss it after a decade. It reached 250km/h in fourth gear and was a comfortable tank that was beyond awesome in winter conditions.

I remember seeing this on my way back from school back in 2006. On a two-lane highway behind a long line of cars. I was about to switch right to pass in the seemingly free lane when I spotted what I thought was an S6 in my rear view way behind and approaching very fast. I thought there's no way I'd be able to get my humble Toyota Yaris fast enough to be out of its way. So I stayed. Thank goodness I did because this thing blew past at a frightening pace. I can still recall that glorious V8 burble as it went by.

The rear cup holders were below the front centre of the rear seat base, amd similar pop out style like the front one but a pair instead. Easily missed though.

The RS6 is really amazing because you have to unbolt the front swaybar to remove the oil filter. AMAZING.

The solar powered fan, the window shades, NAV, and the black tipped exhaust were the only options. It also came with two sets of wheels, one for winter/snow (more narrow). Oh and there was carbon fiber trim rather than wood trim.

In 2009, I was working at Audi VW in my area and one of these came in and I was lucky enough to detail it. No one else seemed excited about it, yet it sold within an hour of it being finished. I loved the few hours I had with this car. Around the same time, someone traded in a pristine Geo Metro with less than 10,000 miles. I wanted that just due to its unusualness. 😆

I loved that the armrest/storage folded up out of the way. Audi put this in other cars, too. In my 6-spd manual B7 S4 that armrest got in the way of my shifting. It was nice to fold it up and not worry about it.

I think you really should do a video on the D2 S8. It's cheap now, but in its day it was a flagship super saloon with a 50-valve V8 and Audi's most complex aluminium space frame. It had so many quirks and details about it from the solar sunroof to the steering wheel shift buttons. It was lighter than the S6 of its day despite being larger and more complex.

Ah, back in the days when Audi’s S and RS models had genuine cast aluminum mirror housings rather than the cheap “plastic metal” caps that they’ve used for the past 5-6 years.

love this car. Growing up as a kid my friend's dad owned this car. I remember every time I went over to his house I made a point to get a coke out of the garage fridge just to see it. I remember when it was parked in the garage at night after a long drive the RS6 would heat up the garage to at least 90 degrees just from the heat of the engine block. I had no idea about cars when I was a kid but I remember that and always thought it was super cool.

This car really brings me back. My parents had an '03 A6 2.7T and it was (mostly) an awesome car. The rounded style was absolutely beautiful back in the day (I still really like it), especially the rear without the spoiler. The interior had a clean, utilitarian-but-luxurious aesthetic and feel (I can still smell it in my mind). And the Bose stereo was the best that I'd ever heard in a car at the time. Also, having a turbo in a well-built sedan (an AWD sedan, no less), was a special treat back then. The progressive building of boost made it feel so much faster than it actually was. My parents were wise enough to unload it immediately after the bumper-to-bumper warranty expired, seeing how many times it had to go back to the dealer and how much those repairs would have cost. They switched to Cadillac after that and have had a much better experience overall, driving the V8 STS that replaced it to over 140k miles without major issue. The 2nd generation CTS-V that followed was even better (except that the rear seats were virtually unusable due to the damn sloping roof).

Mk4 Jettas have that middle sun visor as well! I think it's actually intended to shield your eyes from glare when the rearview mirror is flipped down for night driving. The center console that rotates and locks out of the way is shared as well. Cool to see how VW Group ideas spread up and down product lines.

Hey Doug, not sure if you'll see this but I Work at Porsche of the Main Line and there are some really nice vehicles between the new and pre owned lots. everything from a 200 mile 2020 Huracan Evo to a 1985 Porsche Carrera Cabriolet in Guards Red with black interior. Glad to see your back in the area!

My favorite Audi. I love to drive these cars. Great for road trips, super quick and lots of grunt off the line. Very much a sleeper to most people who have no idea what it is until you gap them.

You missed my favorite quirk, a 35k mile timing belt service interval 🙄 But spot on for everything else.

My 2003 one was black, pretty sure the battery was under the floor in the boot (trunk for the US). Fabulous performance, very much a Q car. The 5 spoke wheels were nicer and agree about the cast mirrors, two years of pleasure (and impressive fuel bills). Also made a fantastic noise, only thing I can imagine would be nicer (if possibly less reliable) would be a V8 Vantage..

My neighbour owned a 2008 RS6 Avant, I remember that I would always hear his startup, the roaring V10...

A lot of these parts were used in the MK4 Golf! The centre arm rest is very similar (if not identical) and the Golf had the middle sun visor too!

That’s why there are so many 6 speed manual transmission swap RS6s on coilovers now. Problems solved and it gets the proper manual it should have had.

I live in Europe, we had an A6 1.9 TDI from 2002 and we sold it 4 years ago (not because it broke , because we wanted something new) . It had ~400k km . I almost cryed when i saw this review , so many memories (i know its not the same thing , but it was similar enough)

Despite all Doug's efforts, the interior is simply every early 2K's Audi controls. My father had a base A3 TDI, and the centre console was exactly the same down to the cup holders. The radio, the ashtray, the red display, the automatic transmission lever... just plain, understated, Audi.

Just bought one today, except... the previous owner put the suspension on coils, no more air. Tranny was swapped out to an R8, a lot more robust. Now I'm excited to drive it!

douggie i prefer that dashboard dials anytime instead of a crappy screen that looks like a cheap chinese phone .......that interior is timeless , its like a good suite, never gets old.......

I have an 03 a4 and an 01 s4. It’s pretty nice having 6 settings for seat heating once you start using it. For example, when I got in my car this morning, I turned it to 4 then down to 2 when i started driving. When I got to work I put it on 3 until I went in.

Used to own an 2002 Audi A6 3.0 10 years ago. Get to say the even though it is costly to own, it had very solid ride and everything is very well put together. Still like that car.

Carbuyer: Can the transmission handle all this power and torque? Salesman: Oh hell yea, its rock solid. Its an RS6.

Man I miss the mid 2000's. When every car had a sleeper version. Good times.

I use to have an audi a6 this generation and the cup holder position was perfect. It never driped. I had 10 cars after that and the a6 was the best in therms of cupholder because in the winter the hot air would keep my tea or cofee hot and in the sumer my coke or lemonade would stay cold because the climate would blow air straight on it. I always had perfect drink at my discretion :)

Oh so agree about the fender flares! Saw one as a kid and instantly noticed the fender flares.

There are a pair of pop out cup holders in the middle of the base of the rear seats.
