Like most art, it holds a special meaning to the owner when they understand the craftsmanship and skill needed to create it. A smaller brand could reproduce this watch with a printed design, or even an injection mold, and it might look identical today, but the owner of this piece knows, deep down, that someone’s years of training is resting right there on their wrist. Great video

If I had the money, I couldn't bear to have that thing on my wrist because the words' type face would get on my nerve every time I glanced at the dial. Cursive-inspired font looks horrific when in all capitals.
@Kpiotr
@Kpiotr 6 жыл бұрын
My thoughts exactly. In general, PP seems to not pay any attention to typefaces, using very generic ones, which is a huge mistake IMO. Being conservative is one thing, but using Arial on a timepiece worth thousands, is a completely different story.
@MattGDesign
@MattGDesign 6 жыл бұрын
As a type designer and graphic designer, I second that. It's a crime against humanity using the default all caps for a script typeface, and the letter spacing is awful, everything is butted up against each other, it's as though the designer just picked the free font from the list without even choosing ligatures or swashes.

Patek 5131J was an application piece. Rhone products allocates the watch to the customer and was not available for "walk - in" customers. Therefore the comment "back in 2013, you could have walked in to a Patek Philippe boutique and purchased this for £ 45000" is not entirely accurate.

Cloisonne is beautiful, but doesn't make a € 100.000,- watch per sé. I have cloisonne vases from China, a hundred years old, beautiful colors, same technique as this PF dial, but worth somewhere around € 100,- Either the vases are terrible underrated, or the dial is overrated. I think both statements are true...

It is not about high class vs poor. It is about an appreciation for skill, craftsmanship and rarity. A poor person can appreciate all those things even if they can't own it. I cannot afford a lamborghini miura but I'd stop and talk to a person who does to share in the nostalgia. The same with this watch. I can stop and talk to the owner and discuss the movement in his watch vs my Daytona 4130. We could talk at length about Rolex's marketing vs Patek. I know the owner of this watch would appreciate all those things and I'm sure they would enjoy the conversation as much as I :)

I don’t like being negative, but I have to say the workmanship of that cloisonné is... brutal. For a great dial from a comparable watch look at the Laurent Ferrier galet traveller. For better cloisonné at 1/10 the price look at the ulysse nardin classico dragon. Comparing enamel work on vases and such is different because there is so much more space to work with, but even other watch dials are much more well executed than this. Great video as always.

To make one thing clear: No paint brush has just a single hair, because the hair is for storing the paint. A single hair cannot store paint. Also, its not that important how many hairs you have in a paint brush, but its important how this hair is formed - especially the brush tip. The best brush for the finest details has a big belly to store the paint and a very sharp tip for finest details.

The watch which is the most expensive in my collection is JL Reverso Classic Large Small Seconds, I also own Omega, Tudor, Longines, Hamilton, Frederique Constant (clock from the link) Sinn, Seiko, Tissot, etc. All of these watches work almost perfectly and I have not had a malfunction. The point is, the companies that produce these extremely expensive watches know that it's not worth the model for that money, but they also know that there are millions of extremely rich people in this world (who own over $ 100 million) and do not care much if they spend half million dollars on a wristwatch, because it is important for them to be viewed with a brand that is luxurious and very popular, simply they embarrassed to wear Seiko, Hamilton or Sinn ...

"Patek" is the sound it makes when you put it back on the counter and say "are you fucking kidding me?" to the salesperson.

Its worth what someone is prepared to pay for it (nothing in my case, not my cup of tea). Excellent video as usual tho, thanks for posting 👍👍

Do you you what else is worth 100 grand? A really nice BMW M5

Not really. 100k for bits of hard plastic in the interior and doors that sound hollow when you close them. A Porsche Boxster or Cayman on the other hand, and even the Beetle... I mean the 911 is much better for less money.

Well, the market determines the price, so it is indeed worth 100K. Its a physical commodity you can buy and sell. Talking about our own ideas about value is not really of interest, but the reality is that this watch is more likely to retain value in the coming years compared to the BMW M5, so if I had to put my money somewhere I would take the watch any day, dispite the fact that it looks awful...
