That's true, and fine when you have money. My husband of 44 years passed this April 2023. Worked for the government over 30+ years. Died before he could retire. We were married 44 years. Because I'm his spouse I got his retirement. I had to provide his certified death certificate AND our marriage license. Without that just living together for 44 years wouldn't have been enough. It also allowed me to take half of my social security and half of his, which means my social security is now higher. I'm not able to work, and for those that can, if you take social security you can only work part time. He also left me life insurance we carried, and life insurance through his government job. That wouldn't work either without a marriage license. So, I'm happy for them both and understand why they've chosen not to marry, but for most of us it just isn't practical.

This comment should be pinned. This is so important for people to read. Marriage is more than just a “piece of paper” everyone keeps referencing. Marriage is a symbol of deep commitment and gives both partners spiritual AND legal rights.

There is no common law marriage in California. What works for some people may not work for others. I love that they prove that you don’t have to be married to have a stable, loving marriage with beautiful children and grandchildren. No they’ve never walked down the aisle and with no common law in California no they’re not married. To each his own but it goes to show that no you don’t need to marry to be true to one another.

Just maintain that same attitude while married and there won't be a divorce. I think when people get married they feel this enormous pressure to not fail that they sabotage themselves. I've been with my husband for 11 years and I can understand because everyone in my family from my grandmother to Aunts and Uncles and my parents and my cousins are all divorced. I'm the youngest and am the only one who has made it work so far. And that's because my husband is my bestfriend. I talk to him about everything and when these apprehensions about marriage come up I don't plan my exit I discuss with him my fear and we resolve it together one day at a time.

I’d like to give people a break. People are human! people are a work in progress. It takes years for one to understand them selves much less understand what they want or what they need from another. In a hospital bed, i ask an elderly lovely couple, the secret to a long marriage. Who been married 48 yrs. Very sweet lady, caring for his ill husband, once said to me that the secret to keeping a marriage is Communication, patience, and tolerance. Lots of communication. No texting, misunderstandings can arise. The Communication and patience came from the husband, and the wife mension tolerance. Because she had to tolerate a lot of his bad habits. When we run out of these we run out for a divorce. We stop trying. Because its easier not to deal with it, than deal with it. Zero tolerance, zero communication and with zero patience. Whoever Tolerates you the most is the person who cares and loves you the most.

I’ve been married once before. Now I believe that when two people are together for many years and not married, it shows a true testament for their love for each other. A divorce takes so much paperwork and trouble to complete so people decide not to do it and stay together for the wrong reasons. Those two definitely hold true love for each other. 💞
@essenceocean595

Everyone’s arguing that they have true love because at any time they can walk away but they’re also saying “at any point in time if someone better comes along I might leave you for them.” One could argue that they’re constantly not choosing each other because they’re not committing. A marriage represents a bond. A promise. That means something. I heard a lot about not wanting more divorces. It sounds like she’s scared of marriage because she doesn’t think they’ll last. So she’s avoiding the divorce by avoiding the marriage. That doesn’t sound like true love. True love would be willing to commit. We all know this.

Easiest answer is…it’s not necessary. Marriage as defined by law is an economic commitment / legal union and why do either of these individuals need that? If i’m wrong, please show me a law that regulates feelings…which is what likely got them into the relationship.

I personally think that a paper is just a technically that allows one to help the other be the one deciding health issues. The need of having a stable, respectful relationship and the will to choose one another dose not change nor the commitment if there is a particular paper. My partner and I got married to celebrate our LOVE and Commitment to each other, plus it gave each other respectful rights under the law.

Some people act like marriage is a curse. They can still separate after all these years. Most are probably speaking from marriage failure experience. Actual marriage is a beautiful thing and not just a piece of paper. It’s sacred and has true meaning. Who’s to say neither of them wanted marriage. Maybe one of them chose to settle because the other one didn’t want it and it was just easier that way

But why would you live with that fear-filled mindset, “I’m prepared for a future divorce or split, even though we’ve been with each other for years and enjoy each others company and promise to stay together?” Marriage is more than just a fancy wedding or piece of paper, it’s a strong contract, a sign of trust, making promises not just to your spouse, but to their family. If you can’t trust a persons written agreement, then you aren’t fully trusting their verbal agreements, either. There is always an escape route, but no true boundaries in the relationship. Marriage sets clear expectations that can’t be forgotten.

I feel no couple should ever feel pressured into getting married! I for one witnessed and endured the separation of my parents at a young age, it left a mark in my life, Questioned by an elementary school teacher as ,"Well Bear, do you ever see your self getting married?". While many other classmates replied with an over joyous, "Yes!" I replied no! I did not devulge my reasoning, but, I am sure the hard time I was put through while my parents separated made an impact, eventually my parents were persuaded, by another family member to keep the family together it always made me feel like that marriage was not for me. I would date many girls, but one day I fell for a girl I cared for deeply, we dated, eventually wed, but, our relationship or marriage was cursed it seemed, she was a divorce already marrying a guy who she would later divorce due to emotional and physical abuse. We worked through all her mental and physical fears about men although we were married for 15 wonderful years and did many wonderful things together, But, eventually my drinking, and womanizing brought an end to that marriage it just goes to show that some were not meant to marry.

As someone who has also chosen not to get married, I think theres a comfort and a sense of added security that you are together because you are both actively choosing it on a daily basis rather than possible insecurity that either party is staying only out of duty, feeling trapped, financial security etc. Getting married with the view that if it doesn't work out you can get divorced (which many hold) seems to negate the statement of commitment that marriage should bring. However I do believe that all relationships, married or not, require daily work.

I get what you’re saying and you’re not wrong but I think her point was about the divorce process itself. She mentioned how divorce makes people hate their spouse even more than how they felt before they filed. These things can get nasty. And people may do and say things they wouldn’t originally have. Kids typically get caught in the crossfire of this. When there’s less of a process, less to lose, less uncomfortable court proceedings, less to stir up animosity; cooler heads tend to prevail and there’s more cooperation and that can go a long way toward making the separation easier on kids. It’s not for all situations, of course. It depends on the people involved.

@helvaxh8348 exactly. I've been w my partner for 20 years, never married, but we did split for a year after having kids. Bc we didnt have to divorce, it was very easy and the kids hardly noticed, other than having less stressed parents. Obviously we were both able to remain civil, sane, rational etc which is a big deal regardless of marriage but I honestly think that if we had married and divorced, we wouldn't have ever gotten back together bc it would have been so traumatic, expensive, stressful, scary, life-altering etc. Bc we never married(we were engaged at one point though), we were able to drift apart and then drift back together peacefully and naturally w no court, 3rd party, fighting, financial loss etc. We even bought a property w 2 houses on it so that we could live separately but raise kids together. Eventually we got back together, he moved in w us and his grandma moved into his small house lol

Nope... and NOPE. 🙄 Only •SIX• States now currently legally recognize and enforce Common Law marriages for the past two decades, at least.... all other U.S. States and Territories •DO NOT• .... so 'Common Law" marriage nor however long that ppl have already lived in cohabitation out-of-legal-wedlock doesn't mean Jack Squat to •any• U.S. court system OR to any Government Office in the case of any potential future claims for a deceased partners assets or government/legal benefits if you don't happen to live in one of the only six States that ●DOES● still recognize and enforce all of the legal requirements for a Common Law marriage to apply. And since these two particular people that this video and topic of discussion is about to begin with... have lived in the State of California, (which DOES NOT recognize nor uphold Common Law marriage), literally for decades BEFORE they even met each other and have also lived in that State ever since afterwards, too ---- then a 'Common Law' marriage between them nor anything else regarding such is even remotely relevant nor applies here in this particular situation and context for you or anyone else to even bother trying to bring a buncha "Common Law" marriage BS in to any discussion about these two particular people as if it would, or even •could•, ever even actually possibly ●MATTER OR APPLY● to their relationship in the first flippin place. 🤷‍♂️🤣🤣🤣
