Well, after a short drive let's just say she did not borrow the Taco. I love that truck man. It's black and the clear coat is going on the roof and hood but other than that it runs great. I did have to do 2 rust repairs with Safety Caps from auto rust detailers but that's living in NJ. Yeah everybody wants a favor when you have a truck. Just say no or you drive the truck and help them out. I hate lending any of my cars or cycles out. Too many bad results with people not taking care of my stuff.

Last year, I moved to my home in Palm Springs, and I didn't have room for all four of my cars. I only kept one, a Lexus SC430 that I bought new in 2004. It only has 67k on the clock. It's a brilliant car with a 4.3 engine - 8 cylinders. A perfect Palm Springs car. I can't even begin to say how much I miss that Tacoma. I now have to pay for things to be delivered! Ugh! These first gen Tacomas come with a sport mode button called "ECT PWR." Makes a world of a difference in acceleration for city driving, and gas mileage stays the same at 17-19 MPG. I keep mine on! ECT PWR off sucks and makes the transmission upshift gears way too early and makes an already sluggish truck more sluggish. Keeps engine in better RPM range for power.

Scotty, I’m really surprised at you! True, it may be only a 2wd, but this would’ve been a great avenue to explain to non-Toyota truck enthusiasts “what makes a PreRunner a PreRunner” and not just a plain and basic 2wd. What’s so cool about these trucks is that they have, from the factory, a push-button E-Locker for the rear differential! You can go quite far, given factors, in a 2wd truck with a locked rear end and that’s what these Tacoma’s prove. Great for blasting around in the sand and dirt. That’s what inspired this neat sub model; racing! Have a great day everybody.

I have the same year and model with 256k on it. I bought it new. It runs smooth and the AC is super cold on the hottest days here in San Antonio. The only thing I’ve had to change, other than regular maintenance, is the water pump and that surprisingly was the same price at Autozone. Either way, I buy dealer parts only for my truck, they last longer. Places like eBay are full of them for this truck, love it! I switched out the headlights for new ones last summer and the truck looks brand new again!!! I don’t mean to brag but almost every time I take my truck to Discount Tire to balance and rotate my tires, some guy, usually about Scotty’s age, will ask me about my truck and some time during mid conversation will offer me “10k cash right now” (their words). I smile and tell them, I love my truck, it’s not for sale. We’ll keep talking a bit more and the guy will ask me again, “10k cash right now, my bank is down the street!” FYI, if you ever see one of these for sale and it’s in good condition, snatch it up because it won’t be for sale long! Just my opinion but I don’t like the new Tacoma’s, they are too big! My neighbor has one and I thinks it’s beautiful but mine does better on gas!🙂 Wish Toyota would bring the Hilux to the states!

You have nailed my experience with the 01’ 6cyl Prerunner. Engine quit for the first time at 285k miles. Spent $3000 for repairs (fuel injector seals and other deep engine work). Began hard shifting at 300k miles cuz I never changed transmission fluid after switching to full synthetic at 80k. Replaced trans fluid two qt at a time. Now it Runs great And shifts great. 309,000 miles so far.

I have a 2004 Toyota Prerunner TRD reg cab. I’ve had it for 15 years and I love it. All my coworkers have traded cars 3 or 4 times and I still keep my truck. They replace vehicles while I replace tires and wipers. You can’t beat the value, my truck still runs almost like new. I’ll probably keep it forever. Not having to shop for a vehicle every few years is pure heaven.
