Buying a new Kia is a terrible decision, buying a Toyota or Honda is still way better. These old $500 kias though are fine
@brickkpunchley3 жыл бұрын
@@turkey4957 Buying new isn't bad. The "lifetime," warrantee is great. It'll get you either 8 years or 100k. Not bad considering. Used isn't bad as a beater to run into the ground. You'll get the 1500 dollars you put into it probably. Toyota is still the target for value new, or longevity beaters. Honda is there too, but I fear they probably were driven poorly. Nissans are in the same category as Kia and Hyundai, and Subaru's rarely get sold as their owners are married to them, perhaps illegally.

@@brickkpunchley That 100,000 mile powertrain warranty only sticks with the original owner.. If you thought you beat the game by buying a low-mileage 27k car, SURPRISE, it wasn't a transferable warranty. And if you are the original owner and need work done, SURPRISE!! Owned an '01 Spectra. Drove it like I hated it for 2 years. Needed a ball joint, oil change, new tires, and an engine service. I never gave it any of these and it needed them day 1 when I got it from the auction. Bought it for $900 in 2013. I sold it in 2015 for $500 to a new immigrant who desperately needed a car and told her about all of the issues. I still see her driving it today. Make fun all you want. I hated that car when I owned it, but it is in fact one of the best cars on the planet. Someday, when I have the money to spare (which I apparently wont need much) I'm going to turn one of these into a track rocket no matter how hard I get made fun of for it.

Oil change? That is the most basic maintenance, not a repair... There are literally minute lubes every couple miles in any city, takes 15 minutes. If you don't change your oil, eventually your engine will seize, and only be worth scrap metal. Oil change is the easiest thing you can get done to your car, and one of the most vital. Also if you tow the broken down car to a scrap yard, they will give you 200 to 300 dollars for the car. So pay for tow and taxi home, leave you will at least 100.

Common car knowledge would tell you that the screeching noise when it starts up is an easy fix, its just a belt...
@treelife3658 жыл бұрын
+Techno sailor - I had that same noise with my Spectra, even after changing all the belts... and it was actually the bearing in the alternator. Had to get an entirely new alternator, even though it was just the bearing for the pulley.
@KiwiPowerNZ8 жыл бұрын
+S Brian Chong Most people don't have the tools required but if you disassemble the alternator and got the part number for the bearings you could replace just the bearings using bearing pullers and a hydraulic press. But hey it's a throw away society now so they'll waste the whole alternator.
@treelife3658 жыл бұрын
+KiwiPowerNZ - Damn, I would've done that had I known. I asked the dealership if they could just replace the bearing and they said no... I don't have a hydraulic press, though.

S Brian Chong Parts are cheap, labour is very expensive. If you ask them to fix an engine they'll recommend finding a used engine from the wrecker because it's less time and labour. Mechanics and dealerships will always take the route that requires the least time and labour.

Kia and Hyundai are all fun and games until the timing belt snaps...
@mossmiller8 жыл бұрын
+Joel Siciliano How true...I used to sell the Hyundai Elantras in 2003, and the timing belt must be replaced every 52,000 miles. Sold one to my neighbor's son, who decided to put the timing belt off at 52K, and it snapped shortly thereafter. The Elantra was a good car, but the Mazda Protege is better...my wife still drives an 02 Protege and it runs like new at 105,000 miles. Timing belt on these easily lasts 90K.
@Torvikholm8 жыл бұрын
some years ago i was working for a contractor. At the time i din't have any cars of my own, so i was given an old Toyota Dyna 100(pick up) that i could use to and from work for a few weeks. There was a orange light in the dash saying T-belt though. The car was about 15 years old, it never started on the first try, was dented an scratched, and had about 300k km(180k miles) on the clock. Of course there was something that was wrong, so I gave it no care for the first few days. I asked my colleagues what the T-belt light was, they said it indicated it was time to change the timing belt. I asked when it was last changed, they answered "never". Till which, slightly shocked, I ask "how long does it last?". I was told it was supposed to be changed every 100k km (60k miles) and that it could snap at any time. Nice to know, considering the car was a flat nose, and that I literally was sitting on top of the engine while driving. I do believe the timing belt held the cars life. I believe it was scraped a year or so later, when it failed the road vehicle approval(whatever it´s named in american).
@sk8rjoel5678 жыл бұрын
+Torvikholm Toyota are pretty long lasting from what I observe. a timing belt lasting that long is impressive. friend of mine had his go in his Hyundai at 83,000 miles and of course interference engine... engine was toast. still annoys me when they just scrap, atleast be in a big financial pinch before if you're gonna do that. if it's older, whatever it is just fix it and keep it going.
@evancourtney77468 жыл бұрын
The T8D engine in that Spectra is non-interference. It's a nice little engine really, not a powerhouse by any standard but solid, economical and well executed. The story is that it was Kia's first wholly in-house design and being their first in-house design the engineers were rather conservative: everything is a little heavier, little thicker, slightly less stressed and designed to run cooler.
@lizardking52377 жыл бұрын
I had an 03 Kia Rio, well I kept putting it off till one day Idling at a stop sign the belt had a 5 or 6 inch section of teeth sheer off. Most of the valves shattered, couple of cylinder wall scratch up bad but luckily the engine was Idling at the time. I got the head rebuilt for about $850.00 plus a new timing belt and all was good again :) But boy did I learn my lesson, don't put off replacing those belts.

I had a 2007 KIA Spectra. My boyfriend was driving home just after dark in the pouring rain. He was hit on the highway offset front by an older Toyota Camry doing probably 60 mph. He was doing about 30 and slowing down in the turn lane when he was hit. He walked away from it with a small cut on his heel from his shoe, and bruising from the seatbelt. The driver of the Camry was taken to the hospital. He broke several bones in his feet, bruised not just his ribs, but his entire chest, and actually bruised his lungs. He had to have stitches on his forehead, and also bruised his face pretty badly. The KIA, of course, was totally demolished, but there was little to no intrusion into the passenger compartment. I was amazed.

I had a KIA SPECTRA 2009. I just donated it to a foster kid who really needed a car. BEST CAR EVER. Last year my roommate flipped it up side down on the freeway, when we flipped it back, all we had to do was to change the popped tire. The car ran with no issue. Later, a drug addict hit me from behind with a BMW 2013 at a speed of 70 mph pushing my KIA Spectra underneath the truck in front of me, when they pulled me out, Kia spectra was running without an issue, the BMW was totally destroyed and non drivable, same as the truck in front of me, it broke to 2 pieces and stopped running. I still got out of the accident and was able to drive my Kia for more than a year after I donated it. BEST CAR EVER. I’m buying another KIA Spectra while I can totally afford something a lot more expensive. If you want stress free driving with cheap insurance, cheap on gas, cheap repairs, reliability, choose KIA Spectra
