The clue is in the name: Defender, is the civilian version of a UK military vehicle, not an SUV, so expect it to be basic and capable offroading vehicle, think Humvee H1. I have a heavily modified one as a third car, it's a toy that I do a couple of thousand miles a year, often in the winter in the snow and ice. Here in the UK there are loads of them, often used by farmers, vets, gamekeepers, landowners, utility companies, forestry and mountain rescue, folks that need serious off road capabilities. While they are not as expensive as in the US they are going up in price here, often private owners will modify them for offroading or overlanding, the personalising and modifying of their Defender is a hobby in itself and sometimes a Defender can get passed down in a family though the generations, a bit like an heirloom.

I don’t understand why some of those people who need all those capabilities just far a damn land cruiser. Like don’t you want to be able to come back and not be stranded ??? A LC can do every thing a defender can. And mine has just under 300,000 miles and never has an issue AT ALL nothing. Every tiny little thing still works perfectly.

@@805NAVE the Land Cruiser is a rugged car, but in the UK the land rovers are easier and cheaper to find and fix, modify.
@GM-ii8gs
@GM-ii8gs 2 жыл бұрын
@@805NAVE I can only speak for the UK, but the Land Cruiser is a very rare product here, I understand we really only get what is known as the Land Cruiser Prado elsewhere, the bigger V8 model we don't get officially imported and and when it does sell new or nearly new a quick look at British AutoTrader website shows that they are £60k-£80k plus as a luxury SUV, which is over 100k USD, for that kind of money you might as well buy a Range Rover which here is seen as a much more stylish and luxurious vehicle. The smaller Land Cruiser is sold as a rival to the LR Discovery and again the Discovery is seen as more stylish in the UK. You are much more likely to see a Toyota Hilux pickup truck here in the UK than a Land Cruiser, they are known to get to high mileages, but most people in the UK won't drive their vehicles to 300,000 miles, they will be scrapped well before then. The Hilux is seen as much more of a work vehicle than a Land Cruiser, but if utility company needs real heavy off-road capability to move heavy weights they will often have Mercedes Unimogs or vehicles which have been derived from military capability such as Renault 8x8 trucks. Here Toyota sells the Land Cruiser Prado as a luxury SUV with leather and a/c etc, and we have a lot of choice of those kind of vehicles here in the UK, most of those vehicles will never leave the road so if you got a choice between Jag F-pace or a Land Rover Discovery/Sport or even on a Range Rover Sport folks go for them, unfortunately Toyota as a brand has an image in the UK as a worthy, reliable but dull brand, even on Toyota UK's Land Cruiser Prado webpage they say the following "With an off-road heritage spanning 70 years, the Land Cruiser range retains its ability to combine outstanding quality, durability and reliability with amazing off-road performance and even greater levels of luxury, prestige and on-road comfort" you can see what their marketing department is trying to do, unfortunately for them the Land Rover and the Defender in particular is a legend in the UK, through its history, capability and links to the military and because there is such an established hobby around modifying and maintaining them it becomes a lifestyle, basically you can join clubs with a community of fellow enthusiastics and go out on day trips off roading, weekends away and meetups. Also with the Land Rover Defender being smaller it better suits British roads and off-roading and you never really truly get stranded in the UK, it's not like the Australian outback where you can be a hundred kilometres away from the nearest town. Got to say my Land Rover has never let me down, but I do maintain it and that is part of the fun of the vehicle. While modern Land Rover vehicles are not know to be reliable, my wife has a new Jaguar SUV and it's had a few infotainment glitches, the Defender has a reputation of been capable of being reliable, just look at the Camel Trophy. It's really comes down to want you want to do, if it's a work vehicle to do lots of miles in and cost is no object get a Land Cruiser (outside of the UK, or a Hilux inside the UK), but if you're looking for a hobby that can be a lifestyle and enjoy working on your vehicle then in the UK it's the Land Rover.
@GM-ii8gs
@GM-ii8gs 2 жыл бұрын
@@matthewkeith8605 You better get the Wikipedia page for the Land Rover Defender change then: "The vehicle, a British equivalent of the Second World War derived (Willys) Jeep, gained a worldwide reputation for ruggedness and versatility" I can tell you from my experience when I worked at JLR, at that time it was seen as a military derived or based vehicle which civilians could buy, major military customers had been having input into elements and technical spec of the design through the series models to the 90 / 110 and then on to the Defender, again hence the name "Defender".

Even the last defenders had holes in the rear chassis cross member to mount a PTO unit to. Used for driving implements such as hydraulic pumps for excavators, wood saws etc. They were marketed as road going tractors for a long time, and always a utility vehicle after that. There's still a few utility companies here in the UK using defenders as maintenance vehicles and with cherry picker backs.

It sounded like you're driving a ww2 tank ( literally the same sounds you hear from games like Battlefield ww2), the heater worked only for the passanger's left knee while the driver got a gust of cold air on his left knee whenever he accelerates (I used to drive around with a banket for my knee) ... I was so happy when the roof stairs/steps fell off because then they saw it had a bunch of rust underneath so they wrote it off 🙌

Could not agree less. Born and bred in Wiltshire (Cotswold) it's predominately farming. A good number of defenders are about (mostly TD5's) still, but most farmers now have Isuzu D-Max's or those with a bit more cash flow pick up a Mitsubishi L200. Those with Defenders will go the same way when the rust eventually gets past the point of replacing a chasis and the cost of a downpayment on a D-Max.

"Comfort" depends on the point of view. Obviuously I would never have such a car for the German Autobahn. In the 90s I had a rental Hilux which was quite rough especially on the rear axle. I had to maintain the tyre pressures quite high in order not to break the inadecuate road tyres (in combination with all our camping stuff in the back) in any dip on the gravel road. At one farm we were staying the landlord actually let me ride in his Defender and I could compare it back to back on the same tracks at the same speeds. It was actually quite a lot more comfortable and more stable than the Hilux (which was the point the guy actually wanted to illustrate to me an why he had it as a daily driver and an Unimog for the rough stuff).

The steering is suggestive, the ride is stiff, the pedal position seems to be extremely precise in being awkward. But it makes me smile every time I jump in and go for a little cruise on the highways or into the bush. One thing I will disagree about is parts availability, it is huge and easy ( although you might have to wait for stuff from overseas ). i like being able to order specific parts instead of complete and horrifically overpriced assemblies ( like you have to do with most any other brand ). If I need one small seal from a fuel window spacial discumbobulator, no problem jump online and order it. Don't need to order half the vehicle because 'that part isn't available separately'. Otherwise yea, its not a vehicle for normies.

Bought an imported one last year and have been daily driving it since. Takes some getting used to but you do get used to it. Swap the T-case gears and you can take it on the highway no problem. Leaks aren’t a big problem for hard tops and if you get a later TD5 or 300tdi diesel they will be far more reliable than the V8. As for other issues you’ll have some. The later ones are drive by wire too.

Gave my Rolexes to my sons for this same reason. I got tired of the $400 to $1,000 service costs every 3 to 5 years, the need for a watch winder, and the fear of bashing a crystal on something. Had a Sub 50th, GMT II, Daytona, Sea Dweller, and a Deep Sea. Way too much money to purchase and service. My Apple Watch keeps much better time and if it breaks, I can get a brand new stainless for the same cost as 1 Rolex service.

This reminds me of the time when I finally got to drive my dream car, a 1988 Lamborghini Countach - the bedroom wall poster king. Cramped was expected, but my inability to deal with the contorted driving position made it a nightmare after about 5 minutes. The other things like nasty visibility, weird clutch and the worrying noises coming from everywhere were expected, but that driving position was a killer. You dream of the looks, the stares from everyone around you....but you pay a painful price every time you drive it. That's what people have to realise that cool cars, especially vintage, often mean big compromises that people have to think long and hard about.

I was on staff at Road & Track Magazine back when this version was introduced. We went on a multi day comparison test with it and other SUVs of the time, like the Jeep Wrangler. I ended up buying the 80 series, and remember very vividly how big of a world of difference the 2 vehicles were. Same capabilities, but how much further lightyears refined the 80 was in terms of comfort, quietness, and smoothness on top of lockers. Of which the Defender had none of those traits but still commaded so much $.

They are not overpriced, since people are paying those prices. And the ride quality is superior to a Jeep of the same vintage. Reliability is the main drawback, yes, but at this point it is really no worse than any 25 year old classic truck or car. The diesel models are very reliable if maintained, and get around 28mpg. They are slow though, probably 82-83 mph top speed.

@@texanbill6032 actually no, they are not unreliable since new. They are unreliable when not looked after. Some versions may have more problems than others. Obviously the V8 automatics would have a tendency to be more unreliable, but in my experience, unreliable Land Rovers have unreliable owners. I own a Tdi Defender. I’ve done 50k miles on it over the last 6 years. I bought it from a military surplus auction after 12 years of service and terrible neglect. After sorting it out initially, I’ve had nothing but maintenance done to it. Starts every morning and drives all day.

@@sebaaaa56 I cannot speak for the diesel models, but the gas models were *extremely* problematic. Not just the Defender, every single vehicle they made. A coworker of mine bought a new Disco back in the late 90’s. It had overheating issues from the start and ate head gaskets. Later he had transmission issues. About ten years later, I played the game and bought a low mileage used Disco. Every sensor on the vehicle had to be replaced at least once. It also overheated regularly and had to have the head gaskets replaced. This one was dealer serviced, and had all service records. Luckily, I was able to get out from under it. And these are the exact reasons why owning/driving an old Defender is the best. They involve you in every aspect. Every journey no matter how short or long is an adventure, and that's why they're fun. Yes you have to actually look after them, actually have to get the spanners out and work on them, that's what makes that bond. Or you can buy a new `thing` that just starts and drives with no drama 99% of the time and you will get terminally bored with it in moments and start looking for the next soulless boring thing (why do you think so many rich people have multi car garages. Their trying to keep driving interesting, because ultimately they're collection of cars are lacking in any connective personality). Real car enthusiasts don't drive Porsches. Mines a 1986 Defender 110 (with 300tdi engine). I would not swap/sell it for any other vehicle you could mention.
