When Ellen, the matriarch of the Graham family, passes away, her daughter's family begins to unravel cryptic and increasingly terrifying secrets about their ancestry. The more they discover, the more they find themselves trying to outrun the sinister fate they seem to have inherited. Making his feature debut, writer-director Ari Aster unleashes a nightmare vision of a domestic breakdown that exhibits the craft and precision of a nascent auteur, transforming a familial tragedy into something ominous and deeply disquieting, and pushing the horror movie into chilling new terrain with its shattering portrait of heritage gone to hell.

I agree with you about the score... but the moment that frightened me the most was totally silent : near the ending, when Alex Wolff is still in his bedroom, turn to his window, and we see something floating very fast and totally silently behind him... o__o

Spoiler question, At the end, did those naked people kill the dog? I just realized that it was completely silent when the cult intruders were there, so I think they killed it to keep it quiet and allow for a sneak attack.

I think I saw the dog right after Peter slowly woke up from jumping out the window. I could be wrong but thats what I thought I saw. Pretty sure the dog died, as it would have barked a whole bunch. Sure glad they didn't show a dog death on screen, cuz I would have walked out if they had done that.

Bart Scantlin Do you guys know at what point in the end did Peter get possess by Paimon? Because he jumped out and I assumed ( actual Peter ) died. And that’s when Paimon took over. However, Peter’s acting inside the Tree House made it seem like it was still Peter the son, which kind of made it confusing for me. Still, a wonderfully crafted film , and I can see how the ending was maybe not as well executed for a lot of people. It showed us too much while explaining very little. Couldn’t have said it better myself.
@BabySpidersHearthstone
@BabySpidersHearthstone 6 жыл бұрын
If you look closely after he jumps out the window a black cloud seems to exit peters body and vanish offscreen. I believe this is his spirit or essence leaving his body. Then the spark which is paimon enters his body and now peter is paimon. He either died after jumping out the window or was at this point weakened enough that Paimon could now enter and take over his body. Regarding why Paimon seems unaware in Peters body it does seem odd because Paimon is very clearly aware and has a hand in all the shit that takes place before he takes over Peter. Paimon possesses Annie and seems completely aware of himself. In Annies body Paimon purposely chases Peter up the the attic right where the cult seems to want him to be. I suppose you could argue that after taking over his perfect vessel Paimon has some sort of amnesia or some such bullshit for some reason, but that part doesn't seem to make much sense no matter how much I try to rationalize it.

@@BabySpidersHearthstone the reason for Peter's (Paimon's) face is confused is because Paimon and Charlie are the same Spirit. They even call Peter, Charlie. Charlie is now conscious and seeing her dead family and cult members surrounding her, declaring her king after stuffing her soul into another body because she is either the reincarnation of Paimon or the Grandmother attached Paimon to Charlie while she was an infant. Just my take!

It was good. Toni Collette's performance is the main reason to watch. Found it to be way sadder than it was scary - which isn't a slight. The creepiest parts are the shots with people standing in the dark - or doing weird stuff in the background that is out of focus (people who see will know what I mean). Some cons are that it was a bit overlong - should've been tighter, got a little tired midway through. The last scene is really goofy - too artsy fartsy - would've found it more profound if it was more grounded in reality.

Grounded in reality? It is pretty ambiguous as to if it was the result of something supernatural occurring or the result of an inherented mental disease that precipitated into something awful.

I don't think it drops the ball that much at the end. They were pretty much setting up and foreshadowing everything that happened, it's just that it didn't feel as original or as fresh as the rest of the film. Kind of disconnected that way.

The problem was that stupid voice over explanation at the end...they should've all just knelt and said say "praise to Paimon"....and that's all the exposition we needed to cap off the plot. I mean Christ, she pretty much both spelled out the plot and recited some of Paimon's encyclopedia entry...wtf was that?...it ruined what should've been a great and creepy ending.

Saw it with my wife, our friend and 12 year old nephew and each of us had a different response. Wife was told it would be like the Exorcist and was massively let down, I was on the edge of my seat with the movie ratcheting up the tension, Nephew was just expecting jump scares so therefore didn't think it was tense or scary at all and friend genuinely laughed throughout the movie.

Very intense movie. The music, which sounds like a baby's heartbeat on a sonogram, is absolutely riveting. I've watched high brow horror ( the babadook, the orphanage) and popcorn horror ( saw, annabelle) but I have never seen anything like Hereditary. Toni Collete's performance is the best I have ever seen. No movie, no matter how gruesome, has ever made me look at the floor. This one did. Without gobs of blood, violence or jump scares. It is pure tension, dread and sorrow. It's not for everyone, if it's up your alley you will not be disappointed.

Have to agree with Alonso here. They went overboard on the last act. It went from an amazing psychological horror movie to your typical ghost/demon movie with a convoluted story. We didn't need those two scenes of heavy exposition. A little more ambiguity would've done wonders. Still, beautifully shot, amazing performances, and entrancing soundtrack.

The *really big scene* that ended the first act was incredible and so shocking. The middle third was a fascinating family drama, and the final third was a rehash of modern horror. Basically the Evil Dead invented this genre and everyone is trying to emulate it now. It’s worth a watch, but it takes its own twists and turns when it pleases.

Knowing my brother was so distraught he almost left the theater, coupled with the fact that his wife was almost unaffected makes me thing a particular thing is why the movie was "terrifying" to some. If I'm wrong, I'm wrong, but this movie sounds like it's geared towards people who work with/have children. I have no reason to think this, just that I know my brother and finding out (through this vid), that it's a familial thing.

Is this like The Witch or The Babbadook? If so...count me out! I am a big fan of horror, but sometimes, people try too hard with intellectual artistic horror. Some of my favorite horror films are The Shining, Halloween 1978, and The Silence of the Lambs. I'm not a big fan of torture porn, but more into suspense. I haven't seen one film from A24 that I have liked. So...if anyone will respond...is this film really worth dropping $15? I am somewhat jaded when it comes to horror, because honestly, the last film that scared me was probably when I was a kid. All the modern horror is too predictable. I almost left The Conjuring 2, simply because it was too predictable. It was pretty much The Conjuring in a new location with a nun. Will I like this...or will I be bored. The last horror film I enjoyed was It Follows...because you simply never knew where the monster was going to show up. I thought that was unique.
@BartScantlin
@BartScantlin 6 жыл бұрын
I think the Babbadook was more 'artistic' than this film. It Follows was more grounded in reality than this film is. I personally regret dropping 15 bucks on this film - I think it would make a good late night rental though. Plus, I saw it in pretty packed theater where some people were talking during the movie - so thats pretty annoying.

You say you are into suspense, but do not like The Witch or the Babadook, which in my eyes are masterclasses of suspense. This film is definitely in the same vein as those, so if you did not enjoy them you may not like this. However, it is different enough and has such superb acting that I think it is worth giving a shot when you can see it for cheap or on netflix.

TheHitherto It all depends on the audience. If you love unique slow-burning psychological horror films that get under your skin, then you’d probably have a great time watching Hereditary. If you’re more into mainstream horror movies with gore and jump scares, then you’ll probably have a hard time enjoying it. Personally, I thought Hereditary was a fantastic horror film, and maybe the best horror movie of the decade. Toni Collette deserves an Oscar, as well as everything else about this movie.

TheHitherto yeah, I agree that horror movies nowadays are polarizing to American audiences. Hereditary lived up to the hype for me.

2018's best horror movie, no doubt. Even tho it's not a tipical "horror" movie. Collette and Wolff are incredible in their parts, sound is amazing, photography is amazing, Ari Aster is definitely one we should keep an eye for because it's a masterpiece, both in writting and directing. 95% of the movie, for me, is 9.5/10. Didn't actually see any flaws, and the scene where Wolff bangs his head against the desk is really disturbing. But, when you have a whole movie building tense (i got chills, literally the whole movie, non-stop) and 9.5/10, it's really hard for the ending to live up to that. The end was weak, comparing to the whole move, but wasn't "bad" per say. Just didn't live up to the 9.5/10 movie it was meant to be. 9 for sure.

I just saw the movie and I hated it. The score was great but it led you to nowhere. It wasn’t scary, it wasn’t even creepy in a way we haven’t already seen before, and it was painful to watch. I was trying so much to like it, but it just doesn’t deserve the credit it’s receiving. So boring, so predictable, so uninteresting. And the ending had to have a three minute voice over trying to explain what was happening. This was like a 70’s level horror film. Vincent Price is more unsettling than this.

The entire supernatural aspects of the last twenty minutes can be explained through the various diagnosis’s, so there is some ambiguity.

Why is that woman texting from 4:05 to 5:10 when they are being filmed for this review? So rude and inappropriate. Can't you wait a few minutes until the cameras turn off to text?

🤔I define this movie as a... psychological suspense with a little mystery, a little supernatural (ghosts, possession, mediumship) elements. Just enough gory scenes and two authentic jump scares. With really good acting from the cast. It's not the typical "scary horror movie" from now a days, however it can be. Some may find the supernatural scary and others may find the family struggles horrific. In all a very good movie.

OK I know I am extremely late to this but I highly disagree and maybe y’all missed all the clues the movie was leaving behind but the movie ended exactly how the entire movie was leading up for it to end.

In some places, it's masterfully put together; in others, it's laughable (literally some of the audience and I laughed when we weren't meant to). The sound design and cinematography is really good and it builds tension well. The plot and tone is decent but falls apart in places. I think it's being overhyped for sure because it doesn't do a whole lot new - it's actually a fairly standard suspense/horror film for the most part with some heightened levels of filmmaking.

Christy, you’re one of my favorite reviewers working on this platform, but calling a horror film a “psychological thriller” only contributes to the type of thinking that results in genre movies getting snubbed at the Awards Season.

I don’t get how people don’t like/understand the ending. How else could it have ended? (that makes sense with the rest of the movie). All these reviews where people think the ending sucked are really annoying me. The storytelling and foreshadowing in the movie DIRECTLY point to that exact ending. Either that ending or a happy ending where they somehow get out of that scenario. I don’t know why this makes me so upset lol. THE MOVIE IS GREAT. THE WHOLE MOVIE.
