Interesting video, the tunnel you mentioned under Hereford, does it still exist?

That's a good question Steve! Sadly, I don't have an answer. I did have a look around the road bridge where the railway goes under and near to the point where the line of the tunnel is/was. I suspect it is there, but with the portal bricked up/ filled in. The line of the canal west of Aylestone Park is a mere ditch, even less than that in places, and it then disappears behind Network Rail fencing, and away from view. Maybe someone from the H&G Trust may be able to enlighten further? Thanks for watching and commenting. Cheers, Paul 🙂👍

Tunnel Update for you Steve: I have just found a KZfaq video (clip) showing the portal of the tunnel - so I can confirm it is still there! Unsurprisingly, it is a bit of a mess but, superficially at least, brickwork looks OK.

@@westcountrywanderings Thanks for the answer and the link to the video Paul, so at least one of the portals does exist, would be interesting if someone has got any pictures/video of what it looks like in the tunnel.

Canal portal is at the entrance to the now closed Holmer trading estate, they are building houses there now hope they clear some of the vegetation and the view isn't blocked, other portal is on private land I believe Painter Bros business :)

The problem watching your wanderings is my " must visit " list just keeps growing !!! Absolutely love the fact you not only explain the history of these places but you also inform of the future projects ...you should speak to the English tourist board, they could recommend your content to those interested in visiting the West Country but who want to do their homework on it 1st .

Hello Paul - greetings from Poland I like Aylestone Park very much. And what a nice site to be able to restore part of the canal, all be it only half a mile long. That was a fascinating storey about the canals history. I thought you did very well speaking to camera in a very busy place. Outside your comfort zone I guess. Well done! Loved the short photo tour of Hereford. Very pleased you got photobombed by a dog! That's not happened for a while. A superb video. Excellent commentary, Great camera work. Thank you.

Great to see Hereford railway station again - I used to travel there from Scotland then to the bus station to go a job at the Hay Festival. Great video, it will be fantastic once the canal is restored - I knew nothing about this or the Cotswolds canals when I lived in Gloucester! Thank you.

Thank you for watching and commenting. Yes, I grew up around the Stroud area in the 1960s, but I was barely aware of the canals existence then. Will be great to see them fully restored. Cheers, Paul 👍

Thank you. Yes, it certainly would. Like others have said, it is a shame that it doesn't get the publicity, money or local authority support that other restoration projects do. Would love to see it come back to life though. 🙂 Thank you for watching and commenting. Paul.

You have made our knackered old city look very enticing. Excellent film of the canal as well. A great pity that the Council don't really support the restoration (not in the way that Stroud District Council have the Stroudwater, for example). However, the restoration inches its way forward and like Stroud it will reach a point when there is no option but to finish it.

Yes, that's a very good point that you raise there Philip, however it was good to see the canal referenced on that Herefordshire Council planning document pinned to the lampposts around Widemarsh Bridge. The canal didn't appear on the many maps dotted around the city, so it seems like the city council are missing a trick. Aylestone Park appears 'hidden' too - apart from on the OS Map. No finger posts signposting it, yet it is beautiful when you get there. Thank you for a great comment. Thanks for watching and commenting 🙂👍 Cheers Paul

Hi Paul, when I was filming there I did manage to find the eastern tunnel portal. It was well fenced in and infilled but you could just make out the top of the arch. Enjoyed the film. Ron
@westcountrywanderings
@westcountrywanderings 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you Ron. Yes, I think the portal is covered in new temporary fencing at the moment because there is a lot of building in that area - they are constructing a new business park, and have left space for the canal to be renovated at some future point. It would be great to see the tunnel repaired and reopened, but unlikely to happen any time soon, unfortunately! Thanks for watching and commenting 🙂👍take care, Paul

@westcountrywanderings
@westcountrywanderings 2 жыл бұрын
Hi debs, thank you for watching and commenting. Yes, the name of the island just off The Lizard 🦎 is Mullion Island. It has a posh hotel that overlooks it (Mullion Cove Hotel). The Marconi Museum (and former transmission site) is at Poldhu, just a couple of miles south of Porthleven (foodie town central!). Think lots of peeps go kayaking around the rocks around Mullion Harbour. The village itself is about a mile inland. Take care, Paul
