How did the largest women's protest march in Aotearoa New Zealand happen in 1983?
It started with a phone call from a woman at the Greenham Common Peace Camp in the UK - wanting Kiwi women to join an International Women's Day for Nuclear Disarmament. Fast forward to a New Zealand Herald meeting advert, serendipity, and good timing; diverse groups of women from a wide range of backgrounds, cultures, and skills, making connections and organising at speed.
About the speakers
Kathleen, Frances, and Karen were all involved in the International Day of Action for Women Acting for Nuclear Disarmament (WAND) which became the largest women’s protest march in Aotearoa New Zealand’s history. They had varying experiences at that time and afterward.
Presented at the Central City Library on 25 September 2023.
