This is our first trip to Crystal Grove looking for herkimer diamonds. Esther joined us for about an hour before heading off with the rest of the girls to do some shopping. This was also our first time cleaning out a pocket that Sidney and Esther found. We found a lot of broken crystals there with a handful of complete ones. Thanks for watching!

I will be back this year as soon as they open. Best time to go is after it rains when the sun is out to walk the grounds and find excellent diamonds. Then I do a little digging, and never tried the rock wall yet. I just love it! Thanks for sharing.

A few times in the latter 1990's, I was @ Crystal Grove hunting in the large quarry that was in between the road and the parking area. Found some nice 1/4" to 5/8" Herks. Took a large pail of sub-soil/sand home with me to sift thru a tea strainer & finer screen to find micros. Micros ran between 1mm-12mm. At the time, the only method I knew of was to use Oxy-Clean or Iron-Out. For these tiny crystals, once I had a fair # of them, I used a very small amount of the granules & enough water to fill a small 1/4 oz. plastic applesauce container. Had no information as how long to soak them for to remove some iron staining, so it was guesswork. Since many of these crystals were tiny, between 1mm-5mm, I had to use some ingenuity to rinse them, & also soak them in a baking soda mixture. Years ago, I used to wear nylon-type knee-hi's. Some had developed holes in the upper/leg portion of knee-hi's, but they were never tossed, figuring they might come in handy some day, and they did! Leaving the foot portion intact along with 4"-5" of the leg portion. I put the foot/leg portion into a 6-8 oz. empty yogurt-type container & stretched the top portion of the 'sock' over the rim & dumped the small container of the crystals into the sock. Then remove the sock from the rim of the 1st container, hold the top of the sock together so you don't lose the crystals, dump out the Iron Out solution, rinse well, and re-use container for baking soda solution. By holding the top of the sock together, you can dip the 'sock' up & down in the solution. It works every time I've used this. In more recent years, I've learned one can use CLR the same way. Tiny Herkimers usually are really clear & perfect. Sorry my instructions were so long, but I felt that was the only to present them. Since you and your children are interested in minerals, do you know that there might be another avenue you might explore. I live in CT & belong to 3 gem & mineral clubs. At one of the clubs, some of the club members bring their children. I don't know the ages of them, but would guess them to be around 8 or so. Enjoyed your presentation & seeing the crystals.

Thank you for the insight! We have been on a few trips with a local gem and mineral club here. We have a few different interests, but most of them draw us to the outdoors. I appreciate you watching and taking the time to share your experience.

Hi! Yes, herkimer diamonds are quartz crystals that are double terminated and can only be called herkimer diamonds if they’re found in herkimer county NY. They were once confused with diamonds because of their clarity. Thanks for watching!

These are awesome! Is there a way to cut and shape them like real diamonds?

Yep! They can be faceted like most gemstones. We had one cut into a round brilliant a few years back.
