Rafn and Rosy have released a new full length Hermóðr album of their characteristically immaculate melancholy nature-themed black metal - their first full length since last August’s To The Nightside. Nearly a year since their last fuller immersive exploration of their intimate melodies and propulsive rhythms, that simultaneously channel the stillness of a springtime forest and the raw biting winds of the winter.

I'm not a huge fan of traditional Black Metal, I'll be honest I'm a Core kid listening to a lot of Metalcore, Deathcore and although it's not a core Death Metal. And I like my Black Metal in a very certain way to where it's Melodic, Atmospheric, and semi Symphonic and this is fucking outstanding this probably the best Black Metal record I've ever listened to.

Enough with this fake "raw" sound. It's not 1991 anymore and nobody is recording their albums on tape recorder via crappy microphone.

are you suggesting this sound is 'fake' because it is recorded with a tape recorder? What? Who is not recording to tape any more? maybe not you. lots of people are. Why would people suddenly stop recording on tape recorders? the only thing accurate about your comment is that it is not 1991 any more. That;s cool. it;s not 1954 or 1876 or 1999 or 2022 either. years in the past eh? how about that.

so, is this sound 'fake' or not? what is a fake sound? "nobody is recording their albums on tape recorder " ? suggests you think they ARE using a tape recorder. in which case, is it 'fake'? or not? a lot to unpack here.

@@TransmissionsfromtheDark kinda self-explanatory that I mean the sound stage mimicking those early raw black metal albums that were recorded on crappy equipment. Scooped mids, flat, non-existent bass, zero dynamics, distant and overly reverberated vocals. Back in the day many upstart bands didn't have the luxury of access to first class studios as the hourly hire was expensive, while many of those bands were residing too far away from big cities where major studios were operating in. So they were recording everything themselves on the equipment they had at hand: crap mic, tape recorder, no control over soundstage whatsoever, often times even mono channel with respective outcome. With VST instruments we have today it is inexcusable to mimick the sound which Norwegian black metal bands themselves have departed from a while ago. Therefore, the sound is "fake". It's astonishing that I have to spoon-feed everything to a grown up. Just admit the critique and move on.

There is a lot to say: What does this have to do with Norwegian Black Metal?… …1991?! You rather mean “1992” with the arrival of the second Wave… We are still very far from the "tape recorder" sound here, and when you hear titles like "the old three" you don't need to have a great knowledge of Black Metal to know that we are very far from the great classics of the Norwegian scene, which is obviously not the goal here with its Atmospheric Black Metal! You just want to demolish his music for free without any real justified justification!… it remains your right, but do not use arguments that do not hold up and which partly discredit your knowledge of the fundamentals and the Black Metal scene in general, partly for the dates but even more for the substance! The Norwegian groups who have abandoned this sound remain from a commercial perspective (mostly more than a question of means), to always please a larger number of people, and therefore to make more $ The hypocrisy of this same scene who all shit on Dimmu Borgir in 97 at the release of "Enthrone Darkness..." (jealous of their potential and success) who criticized, for the majority did much worse by becoming parody of themselves ! Now it is not within everyone's reach to have a "pure and Crystalline mainstream" VST sound or not, there is more than the notions of mixing and Mastering to be had, which is not within the reach from everyone, but fortunately, Black Metal therefore keeps a raw sound, otherwise it is no longer Black Metal, but another form of Metal or even Rock or a Crossover, but there will always be people to criticize everything and anything ! If it had had a “perfect” sound, someone else would have found a way to say that it’s not “Raw” enough… But since you seem so talented, don’t hesitate to share all your knowledge 👍
