This incident inspired a full summer of dirt kicking between all of our friends. My mom would not let me in the house until she took the hose to my legs.

Too bad the Cubs didn't surround Herman with more talent, I always thought he did a solid job with what he had to work with.

Used to enjoy watching Herman kick dirt on the umpires feet when he was miffed...so funny

The fans seemed to enjoy it, if the photo is any indication. Billy Martin was another one who liked to do that. In the case of Leo Durocher, he missed the dirt and kicked the shin of Jocko Conlan to begin one of the most memorable duels ever.

I remember Herman throwing towels out on the field after getting tossed. Jose cardinal came out as a peacemaker and picked them up lol

Ken Holzman be 100% correct! Herman Franks was one of the greatest managers of all time. Hey! Could you imagine a bunch of the prema-donnas we have NOW in MLB trying to get along with Herman back in da day?? 🤣

No I can't. Free agency and the boat loads of money that accompanied it changed everything. Baseball has become a rotisserie league as players shuffle off from team to team. All you're rooting for today is a piece of laundry. It all changed when Marvin Miller eliminated the Reserve Clause that bound players to their respective teams. It was the right thing to do, but it took away a lot of the romance of the game, at least for this reporter. I loved baseball up until the players struck the 1994 World Series. Now, the only baseball I watch is the Cape Cod Summer League which is made up of college players with major league potential. It's like going back in time and a better time in my estimation,
