A long review of the Herman Miller Embody ergonomic task chair. I did ultimately decide to return the chair due to the plastic pegs in the back support being too uncomfortable against my back. It was a hard decision to make, as the Embody has been my dream chair since I saw a picture of it upon its release in 2008. I still have a lot of respect for the ergonomic aspects of this chair, and I will always love how it looks, hence my decision to actually make a review of it. Hopefully this review will be helpful to others.
Options on this reviewed chair include:
Titanium Base
White Frame
2.5 Inch Translucent Carpet or Hard Floor Casters
Black Balance Fabric

Great job on the review. Probably the only video on the chair that provides useful knowledge that can only be obtained from owning the chair. All other reviews just seem to regurgitate the same basic information.

Thanks for a thorough and informative video. I've been thinking of investing in the Embody because my current chair is fatiguing and I have several medical conditions including chronic arthritis which affects my whole body. So I was looking at this as an ivestment in my health and well-being, both now, and for in the long term. You've provided the information I needed to make a final decision: I am definitely buying a Herman Miller Embody chair! Thank you very much.

This is the best review on this chair on KZfaq hands down, no other review I've seen even compares to this one so thank you for posting the video. I did go with the logitech edition of the chair as it was cheaper than the regular one at the time that I ordered. It was also in stock so I didn't have to wait 10 weeks for delivery I ordered and received the chair in less than a week. So far I really like the chair and the only issue I had was that it didn't really lock when I had it set to lock upright. Good to see that's just how the chair is, I searched everywhere to see if others had questioned this but you were the only person to actually bring it up. Thanks again for the review.

Thanks for your review I'm a long time user of Herman miller chairs. And just sold my aeron. I'm looking at embody chair and the steelcase gesture (that I'm trying out for 3 days). The only thing I don't like about the steelcase is how warm the seat gets. But the arm wrests are 100% better than the embody and I'm sitting on a loan chair and no noises at al. I do like the way the embody hugs your back and the seat ventilation could be better than anything out there.

Thanks, bkwtang, for taking the time to make these lengthy, detailed videos reporting your experiences with the Gesture and Embody chairs. I recently started experiencing some soreness in the tailbone region, I believe from my tendency to slightly recline (slump) in my current chair. I'm curious- in your opinion- which of these two chairs might be more likely to give relief for this issue?
@bkwtang
@bkwtang 8 жыл бұрын
I don't claim to be an ergonomics expert, so if I were you, I'd see a doctor first to diagnose what's wrong with your tailbone, and to see what type of posture you need to maintain to correct the pain. That said, I don't think slouching leans to a sore tailbone, that's more of a sign of a hard seat, or being reclined too long against a hard back. It'd be hard for me to recommend any of these chairs to you if that's the case, as they all have rather stiff seat pans. You might want to start off by just trying some additional cushioning in your chair to see if that does anything.

@ James Ram - I did end up returning it sadly, as those plastic arms in the back just got too uncomfortable long term. If Herman Miller ever introduces an Embody 2 with better padding, I would definitely buy it, as I found the rest of the chair fantastic overall for me. The chair that I've gone back to, which I already owned, is the Steelcase Leap. I don't have a fully loaded Leap, it's only got height adjustable arm rests and is missing the back height adjustable plastic lumbar support. It's ok, but I think the Embody provides much better overall posture support. Have not tried the Gesture, as aside from the arms, many reviews mention the Leap actually being more adjustable than it overall, especially in the all important lumbar area. It's still on my mind to try a Herman Miller Mirra 2 someday.

The four points that form a square that protrude from the lumbar support is exactly where I felt the pin prick sensation over time. Prior to sending the Embody back, I tried all sorts of crude add ons, such as stuffing padding or a pillow between the pixels and the plastic backing, but all of it just made the chair feel awkward. And such an expensive chair that is as much about its looks should not have to have extra pillows and pads hanging out of it. If only that section were height adjustable, it could maybe be dialed into an area of the back where it's not so obtrusive. I ultimately chose the Hag Capisco as my chair. It's not a conventional chair however, and most people understandably dismiss it outright, as I did initially. It's price to feature set also seems disproportionate. But I took a chance on it because I decided what I really needed was something that allowed more freedom of movement, i.e. something that'd make me get up and really move around. Most conventionally designed ergonomic task chairs are designed to keep you sitting for as long as possible in one fairly static position.

As a new owner of this chair, see 19:23 for THE key thing to know. Basically the chair lacks separate controls for upper and lower back - it is combined. This makes it difficult to dial in at best, impossible at worst. Note as well how the upper part of the back angles IN at the corners - thus tending to push your shoulders forward. Be sure to NOT judge this chair based on a few minutes - you need a long session with this setting dialed in to really know if it'll work.

+rasteroid I don't think there's any head rests out there for the Embody. Herman Miller has never offered a head rest for any of their chairs, and the only 3rd party head rests I know of are all for the Aeron. The 3rd party market's probably just not there for the Embody...Aerons can be easily bought used for under $500, leading to many people still buying an Aeron for their first good high end chair. Whereas the Embody is much more expensive new, and still harder to find used.

*coming back with a question again: out of Aeron Remastered and Embody -which one would you pick and why?! I can understand your con about the individual plastic pricks being uncomfortable. That would be one of my main issues with this chair. The other issues would be a combination of the upholstery and flexible plastic construction that, like you said yourself, can be noisy with certain usage. The Aeron has the pellicle material going for it which should really be designed to uniformly distribute pressure and allow for great thermals. But I guess one of the main things I want to ask you is: which chair is better for reclining in? I have a lower back condition and I mostly have to sit in a reclined position otherwise I get intense pain (but that is more generic chairs, haven't sat in ergo chairs yet)
@bkwtang
@bkwtang 5 жыл бұрын
For me personally it really boils down to: for long term comfort and usage, I'd have to pick the Aeron. If I were using the chair for short periods of time only, I'd probably find some way to live with the Embody. I would consider the Embody the superior chair overall (plus I really love how it looks), if it wasn't for my issue with its back rest being too pokey for me. It's definitely the better chair for reclining, the way it reclines feels fundamentally different from every other chair I've tried to date. Instead of just reclining only your back like most chairs do, it reclines your butt and back together as one unit. So it's very effortless to stay reclined in it for long periods of time. I would say it pretty much has the best reclining system out of all the chairs I've tried. One thing I do wish the Embody could do was allow you to adjust the position of its lumbar support up or down. I suspect that if I could do that with it, I probably could've gotten it to feel less pokey against my back. I've read quite a few reviews where some users complained about it poking them in the back in the wrong spot, depending on their height.

Did you ever notice a noise when rolling the chair? I've got translucent casters on mine and I get this noise when rolling it on hardwood floors. Additionally, that tilt limiter is frustrating. I usually like sitting up, but I hate the wobble you get when it's locked in the upright position.
@bkwtang
@bkwtang 7 жыл бұрын
I was using it on carpet the whole time, so unfortunately I can't comment on the noise issue from the wheels. As for the upright position being loose, if you intend to be upright for an extended period of time, you could adjust the tilt tension higher so that it makes it harder to lean back in the first place. That was the only way I found to stop the chair from being so loose in the upright position, but it's not very practical if you constantly switch back to reclining often.

Planning on ordering one today with the brown rythem fabric, white frame too, armrests, wheels and graphite stand, though will have to wait 8 weeks for it to be made and 2 weeks to be sent out. Probably will look into the rhythm vs balance fabric before deciding which one though. I'm currently used to sitting on a wooden dining table chair with no cushion which I'm used to now so the hardness of the Rhythm fabric probably wouldn't bother me. I am conscious through about the price so for the amount paid it sounds like it's worth getting the balance fabric.

They teamed up with Logitech to create an embody gaming chair that actually has an additional layer of padding. Do you think you'll review it? I'm torn between sourcing a used or cheaper Aeron / embody (Somer companies are selling them off here in Germany as there are barely used ones available) or splurging on the latest embody variant with extra padding. I bought a 2nd hand Aeron in my younger days, and I admittedly bought it purely on looks, when my back didn't care what it sat in. I held on to it for a good 10 years, and there were periods where I owned generic leather chairs that I thought were more comfortable than it. I likely was one size too small, I had the size B, and always felt like the seat pan and back were too short. I ended up selling it (and recuperating most of what I paid 10 years ago to boot) to get my current Leap. Subjectively speaking, I would say the Aeron is more comfortable than the Embody, in that the Pellicle mesh has some give to it, thus feeling softer on the body. My first impression upon sitting on the Aeron was that it felt bouncy...my first impression upon sitting on the Embody was "whoa, this is pretty stiff". The back is most definitely more comfortable to me on the Aeron, compared to the Embody's pokey back. I think the Embody however is superior from an ergonomic standpoint, in how it doesn't restrict your shoulder and arms, and the way it hugs your whole back and keeps it aligned as you recline. My Aeron really felt bomb proof in build quality, even after 10 years, I don't recall that chair ever squeaking or rattling in any way. And that was a chair I had once disassembled and reassembled before to do a move. I don't know that the Embody would age as well, given how much creaking and rattling a brand new one already had. Would I buy an Aeron again...can't say I would. Not having a seat pan depth adjustment is a big miss to me. The hard plastic unmovable edges also feel like a dated design concept, when most ergonomic chairs nowdays are all about flexibility, and being able to move and stretch in place with the chair. The two lumbar support options both don't seem ideal...I had the older lumbar pad option, and it was like leaning into an elbow, more often then not I just removed it entirely. I've read the Posture Fit option doesn't allow for much adjustment, and either it works for you or it doesn't.

My favorite of these would be the Gesture, mostly because I needed a chair with a lot of lumbar support, and the Gesture had the most aggressive lumbar support of the 4 that happened to be perfect for me. Herman Miller's chairs don't have all that much lumbar support. The Gesture also had the best arm rests, and the seat depth adjustment system was a lot better than what Herman Miller does on their chairs.

@bkwtang 4 жыл бұрын
@@timp2315 The real beauty of the Capsico is in how much freedom it gives you to move around throughout the day. Yes it's minimalistic, and it doesn't have a feature set that seems worthy of its price tag...I had the hardest time convincing even myself to go for it initially for these reasons. But once I got it, within about a week, I just adapted to it, and then I found myself not wanting to live without it even at work, so bought a 2nd one for my work place as well. The best way to think of the Capisco is that the chair is there to support your body, and it's entirely up to you how you want to sit in it. You can sit straight if you want, but you can also slouch, sit sideways, sit backwards, stand up on it, etc. The sky is the limit on how you sit on it. My back pain went completely away after switching to it, in large part because I was no longer just sitting in a static L-shaped position all day long, and was actually moving my entire body around on the chair all day long.

I'm guessing with the herniated discs, any pressure on your back is painful? @@cesarwilliamminga5169 I personally preferred the classic Aeron's lumbar support the most, that would be the one that had the removable pad. The Posture Fit Aeron and the Remastered Aeron's lumbar support didn't really do much. The Embody's lumbar support is in a fixed position, fairly low on the back, so it's a hit or miss whether it'll work with your back or not. The Mirra 2's lumbar support is adjustable, but it's also one that I could barely feel. If you want lumbar support that you can truly feel, you're better off looking into Steelcase's Leap or Gesture.

Terrific review - Thank you. I have seen this one and the ones you did on the remastered Aeron and the Mirra 2 as I am seriously looking at picking one up and I am leaning towards the Embody. In watching all 3 though, I noticed that the back support seemed less than perfect for your body across the board. I think in these kinds of chairs, that is the tip of the spear or at least supposed to be so that's definitely a concern for me. Now although I have briefly tested them in the showroom, I am not in a position to trial them at home so I am dependant on reviews like yours and those from other long term users to make a decision. You are right that in all 3 cases you can find people who have issues similar to yours regarding the back support and then again in all 3 cases you can find people who have positively rated the back support and I guess that brings us back to the specific body type/ back type/ back issue type to make a judgment call. I found one interesting review that kind of made sense to me - the reviewer mentioned that it seemed to him that these chairs were designed to address back support more from am anterior pelvic tilt perspective rather than a posterior pelvic tilt perspective. I had to look that up myself but after doing a bit of study - I thought that it does make sense that the back support might seem to thrust harder if one has a posterior pelvic tilt. What do you think about that and would you say you fall in the anterior or posterior pelvic tilt category - I was trying to get an idea from your standing posture but finally decided to ask - I hope you don't mind. Also, I notice in one of the replies to comments below your video, you mentioned that you have some back pain that you are trying to mitigate using these chairs - could you describe that in more detail so we can either relate or put the review in a greater context. Again, I hope you don't mind me asking you these questions, I understand that they can be personal and please do not respond if you feel they are. I will still thank you for the time and effort you put into your reviews.
@bkwtang
@bkwtang 5 жыл бұрын
I had to look up the two categories of pelvic tilt myself, and I would say I probably have anterior pelvic tilt myself. The back pain I had before was mostly in my mid back, as well as hips, due to having to originally sit on the typical stuffed pleather office chairs that my work place had. These chairs just caused me to slouch a lot, and the poor posture habits just built up over the years. None of the chairs I reviewed actually fixed my issue, it wasn't until I tried a Hag Capisco that my back pain went away entirely. That's the chair that became my endgame chair and swear by.

I actually tired the Capisco in store and my first impressions were "wow, that felt better than I expected" but I think I was put off as it was so different and I went for something more normal. @bkwtang
@bkwtang 4 жыл бұрын
@@SJG23 I'm still using the Capisco, had it now for over 2 years and still use it daily both at home and work. Still love it, and since getting it, I've honestly had zero interest in any other chair out there, it is most definitely my endgame chair. I think the biggest thing I've grown used to with the Capsico is the enormous sense of freedom it gives you to shift around and move your body, while still supporting you with something to lean into from all directions. I actually find this chair better in a lot of ways to relax in than most typical ergonomic task chairs, because of the way the arm rests are designed. You naturally end up leaning your elbows back onto the arm rests when reclining, which naturally opens up and stretches your chest and core. I do this a lot when at home, not so much at work, but I think reclining in this manner is half of the reason why my back no longer hurts from sitting all day long. The chair isn't forcing my back into an unnatural C-shaped slouch, it naturally straightens my back through use of the arm rests, without forcing an uncomfortable lumbar support into my back. The other half is how I use it at work, which is primarily sitting in it astride saddle seat style, which again naturally helps straighten the back. I find I shift seating positions a lot at work, such as sitting forward, then rotating the chair to sit sideways on it with one arm rest facing forward, and sometimes also sitting backwards on the chair. That really is the beauty of the Capisco, this infinite freedom to constantly keep your body moving, versus just sitting static in a 90 degree angle + minor reclining angles like most chairs do.

I've wanted to try this chair for years now, and these perks made it made it a no brainer for me to finally give this chair a try. Their return process was very easy (although how smooth the overall process is largely depends on your local delivery company contracted by HM...mine was very competent at scheduling the initial drop off and the return pick up) and the customer service was excellent. For now, the Leap I'm on is adequate, but not 100% ideal. It has its own quirks related to its unique reclining mechanism that I'm not 100% ergonomically comfortable with. For pure comfort, I'd have to say it's better than the Embody, namely because the backrest is better padded. Maybe someday when I have time, I'll make a video about it as well. I have my eyes set on the Mirra 2 next, that's another beautifully designed chair that I've been curious about since first seeing it.

+bkwtang Hi there, I've read some Leap reviews that criticize the lack of seat padding. Do you find that particular area uncomfortable during long work sessions? Also, do you plan to make a video in the near future? Thanks.
@bensontang9556
@bensontang9556 8 жыл бұрын
+IchijyoSan The Leap that I have has a vinyl seat, I've never tried a cloth seat version, but I can see how the cloth seat could potentially be harder on the bottom. My Leap's seat is pretty firm, but it doesn't flatten at least, because the vinyl prevents the air pockets in the foam underneath from leaking out, leading to a cushier feel. There isn't much padding however even in my version of the Leap. My recommendation is to consider the leather version of the Leap, if you're worried about the padding being inadequate, because it'll at least trap an air pocket within the foam to prevent it from flattening too much. I'd still like to make a Leap video someday, I guess I haven't felt as motivated to because it's been a chair that's just worked, and doesn't feel or look very exciting to comment on. Sort of a workhorse, boring chair? But I suppose that's exactly why people would like to hear more about it too.

1st of all, thanks for the review! It's somewhat difficult to find anything on the Embody and I did end up getting it during the 15% holiday sale! Can you provide some info for others such as: Height Weight I went for the regular black graphite base, adjustable arms, clear casters, and balance "Softer-double" fabric. Thankfully I do not feel the "prodding" sensation and wow this chair is doing magic for my gaming sessions, like I feel great after 2+hour sessions lol. My stats: 5 foot 7 inches 185 muscular build

+ZioComposite I am glad you were able to take advantage of the Herman Miller sale, and am glad you find the Embody worked out for you! I am 5 feet 9 inches tall, 145 lbs, slim build. Interestingly enough, I was recently able to sit in an Embody that had the basic Rhythm fabric. I found myself actually liking that fabric more than the Balance fabric, because it feels much smoother and more silky against the skin. The Balance fabric is more heavily textured, and when combined with those holes cut into the material, actually feels rougher. There's pictures out there however showing the Balance is clearly a thicker fabric than the Rhythm, so for the purpose of cushioning, the Balance would remain the superior option. But in terms of feeling, I think the Rhythm feels better, but likely wouldn't have changed my chief complaint regarding the Embody's lack of back cushioning.
@sdemosi
@sdemosi 4 жыл бұрын
I love the Embody with balance fabric but I reckon I've already got a bit of extra padding at 6"1 and 220lb. I like how solid it feels even when I'm reclining back. What I don't like as much are the armrests. I end up lowering them at my desk because they just tend to get in the way. I bought a Steelcase Gesture a few weeks back from a tech company that has gone bust and I'm using it more and more. I got a great deal on the only 2nd hand chair I ever bought. The arms work better, look better and while the recline is a bit sticker (if that makes sense), the extra cushioning feels a bit more relaxing. The Embody is my favourite chair to recline in but for practical use the Gesture wins. It's also easier to adjust. If you could just afford one great chair then I'd probably get that.

Hey i'm 18, 192cm tall and really am looking into a chair like this. Would you recommend this chair to me? Or perhaps one with a higher back. I measured the distance from my backside to my head to be 85cm.

I'm 179cm tall with torso to head distance of about 70cm, and I felt that my back was very well supported. I would say that it was pretty close however for me, I think you may be pushing that limit, and may end up finding the back too short. I think I've read some reviews of a few people 6ft and over that felt ok in the Embody though. If at all possible, see if you can test drive the chair, whether in home or in a showroom.

Finally an indepth review from a real person. Thank you! So what chair are you using now? I am having a hell of a time trying to decide between the Gesture, Embody, and maaaybe leap (I passed up a fully loaded all leather leap at a local store that had extra from a bulk order for only $650 last year because I really liked the Gestures arms and LARGE seat base for sitting in unusual ways but maybe I should of grabbed it). My one concern with the Embody is the seat firmness you mentioned because I have a tailbone injury and if it puts pressure on that I'll be really uncomfortable its also like 1300-1400$ if I get the softer fabric whereas I can get the gesture on sale now for only 875$ from smartfurniture.com

+LordBattleSmurf I still own a Leap, but actually got to trial 3 new chairs over the holiday season last year, which included the Gesture (finally!), an Aeron, and a Hag Capisco. I ended up returning the Gesture and Aeron, but do have video reviews of them, just haven't had time to upload them yet. Of all the conventionally styled chairs out there, I'd say I like the Gesture the most. But the chair I think I'm ultimately going to end up going with is the Hag Capisco, which actually comes as a big surprise even to me. It is a completely unconventional chair that not everybody will be able to handle (and I thought I'd be among them), and is shockingly expensive for what appears to be a simple, minimalist chair. But I surprisingly adapted to it quickly after about a week, and now I absolutely love it, and find it hard to go back to more conventional chairs. Still haven't made a review for it yet, but intend to eventually.

THANK YOU. I have a question though - what is the best office chair on the market today , for 7-9h per day sitting please?
@bkwtang
@bkwtang 8 жыл бұрын
+Sasha J I honestly can't help you with that question, as there is no "best" office chair on the market, only what's best for your body. What I ended up with ultimately myself was a chair that I highly doubt anybody would consider to be the best on the market, and is one that would fall completely off of most people's list of chairs to consider, which is the Hag Capisco. Yet I found that it's the one that works the best for me. So if that influences your decision any, feel free to research about the Capisco. I haven't had time to do a review of it yet, but I have had it for about 2 months now, and liked it enough to invest in buying a 2nd one for my workplace.

Glad to hear that is working for you. I briefly considered the Capisco for my workplace a couple of years ago when I wan having some neck issues but wound up getting a Salli stool instead.which has worked rather well. What do you think about the Hag build quality compared to HM and Steelcase? I'm curious because I'm considering getting a different one of their chairs- the HO9 Excellence- for my home office.
@bkwtang
@bkwtang 8 жыл бұрын
jmhillrph Wow, that H09 sure makes all of the chairs I've reviewed look cheap! I think Hag's chairs are well designed, but to be honest, I can't say they're built as well as HM's or Steelcase chairs. The Capisco mostly feels about as well made as a typical big box store's chair...it even comes disassembled, and requires assembly. So it doesn't have that same sense of solidity you get from a factory assembled chair that arrives completely assembled. That said, the Capisco is also a mechanically simple chair compared to the HM or Steelcase chairs, and there's not much bells and whistles that can go wrong with it. Side note, this is just my opinion, but if you're going for something like the H09 in design, I can't help thinking you'd get more bang for the buck with either an HM or Steelcase chair. The H09 does not seem to have all that much ergonomic adjustments relative to its price. The same could be said for the Capisco, which initially made it very hard for me to justify its cost. But, it is a very differently designed chair, and its ergonomic principles rely more on your own body, rather than your body using the chair as a crutch, like most of these other chairs.

Instead of going through the trouble of an entire in-depth review on the Hag Capisco, perhaps you could just answer me a few simple questions. I love that the Capisco is an "active" chair with a variety of sitting positions - however, do you also find it comfortable to just lounge in? Is it the kind of chair you could sit back for hours and watch a movie in? Do you have any of the footrest options (ie footring or step) and what are your thoughts on them? I'm considering fabric options - do you have the cloth or leather version? As of now I'm leaning towards leather for durability reasons. Finally - fully padded or just padding in the center of butt? I would lean more towards fully padded, but I read somewhere that the half-padded version has a narrower saddle which could be more comfortable and allow for better blood flow. Thanks again so much for all your reviews, they are really helpful!

I found this quite worthwhile to watch, despite so many thumbs down on it. The Embody felt comfortable in a local dealer's showroom but next week they're delivering one to me so I can try it for a day or two. I can't return it so I need to be absolutely sure before I order one. The seat on this chair did feel too hard at first, but after sitting in it for about 40 minutes in the showroom I felt no discomfort. I'm interested to see whether the back will start to feel uncomfortable after a couple hours of sitting. I also appreciated your tip for adjusting the width of the arms one notch at a time. I'm glad you found a chair that works for you even though it wasn't the Embody. It can really be a struggle.

That is certainly something that went through my mind...however I do have some faith in the furniture expertise of Herman Miller, and that they probably would've researched the material makeup of the white plastic so that it can withstand yellowing. The Embody has also been out since 2008, and I have yet to see anybody complain of yellowing to date. Lastly I wouldn't be surprised if Herman Miller covered any severe yellowing under their 12 year warranty.

Two years using mine in a smoking room and its still as white as it was when I bought it. It does however accumulate dust and such on the sides of the frame on the white rubber strip but you can just dust or wipe that off. 11:37 when you say people have a problem with the height adjust lever, its probably because the chair is already all the way at the bottom just like in your video. Otherwise it is very easy to use and you can adjust height by moving the lever in any direction to adjust the height. You don't need to press the trigger to adjust arms outward, only for armrest height. The detent for the arms is very strong and it won't move by just pulling the chair. I don't think you had the chair long enough to really understand what is good about this chair or even how it works because you make comments are just plain not true about certain features for instance 21:00 ywhen you talk about the lumbar. 33:00 You talk about the back plastic poking against your back and feeling them but the funny thing is that it is impossible to even feel those due to it being attatched to a thick flexible plastic sheet and only at the edges. I think the problem you have with this chair is the fact that it isn't a lay-z-boy. They aren't supposed to be but ultra comfortable reclining lounge chairs. So if you buy this chair don't expect it to enhance your online porn experience. It's a work/task chair. It is designed for you to conform to the chair to correct your posture to be able to sit for long periods of time and work without strain. It does this better than any other chair on the market. I have every upgrade on my embody (fabric, white frame, chrome legs, translucent casters) and I sit on this chair for nearly 8-10 hours a day. I like you bought this chair due to the way it looks and was disappointed when first sat on it only because I apparently had a horrible posture while sitting but this chair has fixed it for me because I have not had any type of fatigue after sitting for hours at a time, literally. That being said I'll list my only gripes with this chair. #1) It makes a lot of noises like creaking sounds. Not due to tolerances or bad quality but because of the way the the seat is designed to reset the parts of the "padding" once you take weight off it. #2) I can't sit comfortably on it with bad posture. ( a good thing really) . Heck even the Eames executive chair I bought a few months ago doesn't feel like sitting on pillows. It's not supposed to. #3) It traps and concentrates farts and seems to do this very well. (not even kidding about this) That's it. It's a beautiful chair, its got every feature possible for a office chair and build quality is what is expected for a chair in this price range. Sure it's expensive but it is built for heavy use and it will last. TLDR: It is not the most comfortable chair for relaxing in but as a work/task chair it is probably the best on the market to correct the way you sit for long periods of time.
@bkwtang
@bkwtang 9 жыл бұрын
J jj Ergonomic and comfort preferences are a VERY subjective and personal thing, I'm sure you love your Embody, but no need to get so defensive about it. :-) I don't ever recall mentioning that I expected it to feel as soft or as comfortable as a couch or lay-z-boy, and that's not even related to the end reason of why I returned it. My expectations for an ergonomic task chair is that it puts your body into a correct posture for very long hours of sitting, which usually requires stiffer materials to be used. I already owned an Aeron for 10 years prior to trying the Embody, so I had somewhat of an idea of what to expect in regards to comfort. That's not to say that other potential buyers looking into buying this chair online, sight unseen, will realize that. So I think potential buyers SHOULD be aware that they're not buying a soft and cushy chair. They're paying a lot for a chair that is going to feel startlingly stiff and far from luxurious feeling, compared to that overstuffed pleather office chair they may have been sitting on for years. I'm actually 100% ok with how the Embody felt in overall comfort, as far as how its cloth and suspension system felt. I agree with you that the Embody ergonomically conforms to the back the best, by far out of any task chair on the market. After sitting on the Embody, going back to sitting on other chairs with static backs makes you realize just how truly unique, innovative, and different the Embody's back support is. HM isn't lying when they say the Embody moves with you. Now, regarding the love it or hate it lumbar support, and their related support arms. I'm hardly alone in mentioning that those plastic arms in the back can be felt through both the hard plastic, and the cloth material, and that it gets way uncomfortable over time. I originally saw reviews mentioning that issue, and just thought I'd be lucky to not have that issue. But after sitting in it extensively, and feeling my back get an inflamed sensation in certain spots that no other chair ever gave me, I started to realize I was having the same issue. I'm honestly surprised that so many Embody owners can live with it. My only guess is that it really depends on just how much body fat a person has on them. I'm a pretty lanky, skinny person, and I could definitely feel those support arms over time. It made no sense to me as to how I could feel them, because as you say, there's a hard plastic barrier between them and the cloth. But it is what it is. As a test, I had tried adding extra pillows or soft plastic nubs between those arms and the hard plastic back, and just ended up feeling those 4 pressure points around the lumbar support even more. If HM had simply made the back height adjustable, or allowed that particular square lumbar support area to be independently adjustable in height, maybe I could've dialed the lumbar support to an area where it wouldn't have been so obtrusive. For that matter, all of HM's chairs could really do with having an adjustable back height. I think I had the chair more than long enough to figure out the Embody, and its back support. Having it adjust simultaneously both the upper and lower back support may work for lots of people. But fact of the matter is, there's also people that complain that they simply can't dial in a good spot, with it adjusting both simultaneously. You end up with too much upper back support and no lower back support, or vice versa. I was hoping my body would've magically adjusted to the Embody somehow, because I really wanted to keep it, badly. But, for what it costed, it really had to be both ergonomically correct, and comfortable, long term. It gets the ergonomic part correct to me, but not the comfort.

This video has some weird audio issues. I'm not the first to say I can't hear a word he's saying, so I tried both Firefox and Google Chrome and anytime I have had issues in the past, using either one of these browsers fixed the problem. Not this time. Still can hear nothing no matter what I turn my volume up to. All I can hear is a faint garbled sound, but that's it. And yes, I tried switching Firefox from HTML 5 to Flash video and nogo that way too. Only thing I can think of is maybe it's because I'm still old school and running Windows XP. My laptop with Windows 7 (old school too, I know) just died so no way to try that right now. I guess I'm going to have to fire up Ubuntu and see if that fixes it. If so I will be back to update this comment.

I know this is an old comment but the issue seems to just be that the audio volume is incredibly low. Normally I have the volume at 20-25 on my receiver and get good volume from the majority of KZfaq videos, but from these reviews I need to stick it up to around 50 and it's still fairly quiet. If your speakers don't go particularly loud or if you're using like laptop speakers etc I can imagine you probably won't be able to hear what he's saying even at the highest volume. I had this issue with videos of my own in the past too - my camera just had a poor microphone and didn't pick up much of what I was saying if I sat more than a foot away. Took me ages to realise I could fix the volume by dropping it in a video editing program and bumping it up/compressing it. Until then I just had videos that you had to max out volume to be able to understand anything I was saying.

Straight from the Embody's PDF manual: "To raise arms: Grasp arms while pressing button on the underside of each armpad and pull up to desired position. Release button to lock. To lower arms: Grasp arms while pressing button on the underside of each armpad and lower to desired position. Release button to lock. To adjust arm width: Place two hands on one armpad to pull in or push out. Repeat with other armpad." Nowhere does it say you need to push the button to move the arms side to side. The arms are designed to be pushed side to side manually.
