I have really struggled w buying from the real real. Their photos never show all of the bag or item. Which I feel like they do this on purpose. Then they want to charge a fee to make the bag returnable. Which is ridiculous and shady in my opinion. I have been burned many times by the real real "lack of total transparency" with their photos. I feel like TRR does this to take more money from the customer. I have started buying my preloved items from private sellers in place of TRR. Like I said, I have been burned way too many times from TRR. I also feel like Fashionphile has way too high of prices. They seem to price things higher than private sellers and many times, even higher than TRR. I have called TRR customer service and asked for updated and better photos on a bag and was told no. Their customer service isnt good. Again, I feel like their practices are very shady and not transparent. Glad you addressed this and I hope others who have had similar issues, speak out. This might be the only way they will start being transparent about the condition of a bag, for their customers.

I was looking at a LV wallet on TRR but the only photos they had with the listing was one of the front and one of the back. So I emailed them and asked for additional photos of the interior. Their first response was they could not do that. I responded that the description reflected that the card slots were stretched from use, so I wanted to see how bad. Finally they did put up one photo of the interior but still could not see the card slots. I passed on the wallet and bought one from Fashionphile.

I recently bought a Chanel bag from TRR. It arrived loose in a too large box with no padding. The box had been significantly damaged, with open corners and ripped tape. It was next level bad. I really cant understand how any retailer takes such little care in the sale of luxury goods.

Ok first off….Hermes in a BAG? No. Just no. 🙅🏻‍♀️ Like you, most of my pre-loved items are from TRR. I noticed the shipping went up to $14.95!! Beyond ridic. For shotty packaging?! No padding/protection?! No. 💩 Because of their reputation and horrible pictures and lazy packaging, they should be offering free shipping or (at most) $5.95. I’m taking a LONG break from them. Great video, Autumn! And the scarf is fantastic ⭐️.

Thanks for sharing. I have only purchased a few items from the real real, mainly sunglasses. These new policies will make me reconsider any future purchases. They could have at least sent your item in a box, especially since they charge $14.95 for US shipping.

They don’t want to take returns period. They lose money and they are having as you know some major issues. When you make it harder and harder to refund-people give up. And that’s a short term win for the Real Real. I love blue/green and orange together so I’m loving the scarf. No real real for me.

Thank you so much for the info on the return policy offering fee. I had just started to notice that, it sounded a bit complicated, along with an uncertain & lengthy "insured" return process, you have just confirmed that. Also your new Hermes scarf is beautiful & I appreciate your showing different ways to style it!

Side note Autumn. I think they went with the 3rd party return company because some people will buy an authentic item and then return a replica in its place. This a a scam that got my sister when she bought some very expensive designer shoes from Saks. She ordered the shoes online. They arrived…but something was off..she took them back and they were fake. So someone bought designer shoes from Saks…returned them by swamping out the authentic for the replica. Returned the replica and got a refund. Then Saks restocked the replica not knowing it was a replica and then shipped those replicas to my sister. It is crazy out here. Are we taking our chances now if we do not buy brand new in boutique? So many crooks and scammers out here. It is sad.

The Real Real has been sucking at packaging for a long time. I purchased an Hermes Victoria and it came in a box with nothing else to keep the bag from sliding around. I’ve noticed a few smaller companies that have been charging a shipping insurance type of service like you are describing. Seems like adding the 3rd party adds extra layers between the customer and The Real Real to keep from dealing with returns. That way they can put the blame on this company rather than them.

I so agree with changes in shipping. I’ve never purchased the guaranteed return. I will say the items that are listed as return with credit card refund charge are very easy to return no questions asked. As a frequent user of the real real, I do everything I possibly can to not have to return the item And my biggest complaint is the photos They are awful. They should photograph the damage. If any. And in the worded description they also should list the damage so you know what you’re getting and then it prevents returns. Another important photograph is the hallmark. I simply don’t understand how this can be overlooked. The scarf is beautiful it should be framed. I understand having such lovely silk around the neck, but for some reason I find all these Hermès scarves too lovely to wear.

I love purchasing clothes from the real real. I’ve only had a couple issues buying clothes from them and never had a returns issue. I’m aware their bags aren’t always authentic. I only bought one bag from there. It’s vintage and it’s my FAVORITE bag. I don’t shop on there all the time but I’ve hardly had any issues. I don’t like their shipping costs though.

I have never bought anything from TRR because of all the problems I’ve heard about them. I never felt comfortable with their item authenticity either. The scarf is very pretty and it looks great with your sweater. 💚

Gorgeous scarf. I really hope TRR gets its act together. They are the only reseller I know of that seems to sell a lot of clothing and shoes in addition to bags. I've gotten some great buys. The sell side isn't so great. I don't remember the details but they paid so little on the clothing I found it better to take my things to a local preloved shop.

Great looking scarf! I would say most retailers stopped including receipt in the packages. I use one cosmetic brand, they throw creams in the box without any protection, and the shipping type on average is between 10-17 days, it all come a little disheveled. I contacted them about it, no changes.

I've had good experiences the three or four times I've shopped at TRR for contemporary designers, although my last purchase, a pug-shaped bag from Kate Spade, was indeed just thrown in a box with its dust bag. Learning more about how they've decided to handle returns has me reconsidering shopping with them. It's always felt like a gamble, and this new policy feels cynical and curmudgeonly. Not a combination that has me reaching for the Visa ... I live for sci fi and am drooling over that scarf! Great find!

First of all, Autumn, I love your new scarf! The colors are beautiful. I am officially finished with TRR. Their customer service is worse than anything I’ve dealt with before. I had a huge problem with them and the person I’d been communicating with for 3 1/2 wks couldn’t even get my name straight. They appeared to have lost my bag but I was told a different story each time we communicated. One thing was very clear; they didn’t have a clue what had happened to my bag. Suddenly it turned up, but there was never an explanation. I’m finished with them.

I just bought a Kelly wallet and didn't notice that return option, but maybe that's bc it isn't a final sale item. I did notice there wasn't a receipt and was a bit concerned, so I'm glad u cleared that up. 🧡💚💛

I really like Fashionphile and always have good experiences. The Real Real just throws stuff in a box with a cheap dust bag and not even a nice thank you note for your business. Scarf is cute. I don’t always think using a third party anything is in the best interest of the customer 🤷🏼‍♀️

Love that scarf!! I had an Hermes cashmere scar sent to me in a bag too, so this is unfortunately this is a common occurrence. I wonder if the bags make it seem less valuable and less likely to be stolen?! Just guessing, I think it’s ridiculous too tbh.

I have only purchased a few items from the Real Real; no problems but they were low ticket items. I did go to make a purchase on something more expensive and did not like that they were charging sales tax on the retail price not the price I was paying. I didn't end up buying that item. Beautiful scarf. Enjoy.

Hi Autumn! Beautiful scarf. I have bought several things from TRR and I never really thought about their packaging. The 2 bags did not come in a box but I didn’t even think about it as long as the items were as described and they were so I was fine. (Both bags were flat a Bottega and a Gucci) I guess I look at them as a high end thrift store. Have also ordered several items of clothing that all came in that same bag your scarf was in. I was ok with it because I was getting such a great deal. You have to be shrewd with TRR. We must over scrutinize their photos but I think they have so much volume because of all the clothing that more photos would be so time consuming but they should at least do this for items over a specific price point I think. But for bags I only go to FF now as I think their rating system is a little better. I have a couple of bags from them that were rated “very good” and frankly they could have been excellent as far as I was concerned. And yes they do a superior job with packaging which is why I only go to them for any pre-love bags now.

I still buy from RR (with no problems) but I see that their inventory presently is older, lesser quality and on sale. It seems they are focusing on purging. New shipping boxes are probably going up in prices too. Even Neiman Marcus is putting a note in the shipping box to please reuse. I've always printed my return labels. This is going to be the new norm. The out-of-control inflation is changing the little extras we came to love.

Loving the scarf. Hermes’ scarves are art, worthy of framing and hanging on the walls next to our Picassos, Chagall and Nolans. (Joking! I own none of those artists work!🤣). Living in Australia, I would not buy from TRR. The long distance for the return would complicate it even more. Fun Fact: I think I have crossed over into being a Speedy collector. No longer a Soeedy accumulator! I just ordered a yellow epi-leather 25, on its way to me now from Tokyo (safe!) and fully intend to get a green one by year’s end! Thanks for talking about TRR. I was wondering what you thought about xcover. I agree with you, it’s not an easy return process; I went through it a few weeks ago. As a result I’ve put myself on a ban from TRR because I don’t like having to pay extra for the ability to return. Beautiful Hermes scarf!

Thank you for the video, very informational. I just ordered my first item from them, however, had to leave on a trip before the "possible" return window... hoping it works out. On another note, can we please talk about Rebag and their new program?!? They used to always give the 10% off (at least on my end) but now they are charging $50 per month for their new "program" in order to obtain the 10% off they would always give. Excellent insight with TRR changes. I've had some seriously bad experiences with them which already had me extremely hesitant to purchase, but the new return cost and process has me saying PASS. Too bad, they've had some good things but it's just not worth it anymore. Great scarf however!

It sounds like the new insurance from The Real Real is an attempt to avoid superfluous/avoidable shipping. Some people compulsively online shop because they get a thrill from receiving parcels (then sending them back), rather than because they genuinely want the item/s. If they are forced to cover this insurance fee, they’ll likely not behave that way with The Real Real. They’d shop elsewhere, and The Real Real are likely fine with that as they aren’t genuine customers.

I just had to return a pair of Chanel shoes. They arrived with cracks in the stress areas that could not be repaired. I will say they did take,them back and gave me credits for the shipping on both ends after I called them.

I recently made my first ever purchase on TRR. When the bag came, it had a cut in the leather on the bottom which was not disclosed in the listing and after talking to multiple customer services representatives, they would not process a return. It was a terrible experience.

Yes, and it was a very expensive item. And I even reached out to customer service before I purchased the item and was assured that if the bag was not as described that they would accept a return. Should have stuck with my intuition and continued to avoid buying from them.

Looks like the RealReal is going to be in for a reality check. I’m sure that customers will not be happy with their overpriced and subjective return policy. Personally, I’d never take that chance. Thank you for keeping us informed, Autumn!

I’ve been a customer since the beginning of the Real Real they used to send items in boxes with pretty pink paper and bows. It used to be far better than Fashionphile. Also if you notice they have changed their packages as well. I do agree that the TRR has gotten very low end with packaging and putting nothing in the box so I would like to see them at least get better knowing they will never get back to where they once were. I think that insurance thing is a load of crap. Why should someone pay to return something they mishandled or didn’t describe correctly. That makes no sense to me.

The problem is perverse incentives. TRR is almost certainly compensated by the insurance company for providing this market to the company. This means that at best, TRR has zero incentive to do a better job with accurate item descriptions. If the compensation is based on how many insurance policies are purchased, the TRR is incentivized to spur returns. They get the fee, plus they get to relist the item (no doubt at its original TRR price.) For me, this means TRR price has to be so low that I'm willing to essentially gamble. It feels/is safer to buy on eBay, and the price, photographs, descriptions, and inventory are often better. TRR used to have eBay beat on packaging at least, but not anymore. When a company is struggling to make a profit, it boggles the mind when they decide to make their service both more expensive and less desirable.

I recently ordered a relatively inexpensive bag ($400) from The RealReal. The bag arrived in a generic cardboard box, it didn't have any stuffing, it wasn't in a dust bag, there was no packing material, nothing...the bag and the packaging looked Horrible! I couldn't even bare to look at it for several days. However, once I cleaned up the bag, stuffed it, and stored it, things were fine. Not sure if I'll purchase from The RealReal again.

Autumn - I just ordered an Alice & Olivia blouse from The Real Real and was horrified when it arrived in a bag. The next day it went back in a bag. I can’t believe that they put an Hermes scarf in a bag. I really hope they get their act together because I’ve got some good deals there.

Not to mention that if their website goes down or your Wi-Fi is down, you don’t have any means of getting to your receipt. 😩 Beautiful scarf, it matches your sweater perfectly 😍. The packaging & policies however, very disappointing, not even interested in looking at the website, good luck to them 😮.

I’ve been lucky, I think, and have had no problems thus far with my several orders from The Real Real. I still feel, though, that I’ve dodged a bullet and it’s probably not too long before I have my own nightmare story. They’re packaging has always left something to be desired. I’ve never spent more than $500 on a purchase with them and I doubt I ever will. What is interesting is that they do not offer the return insurance on extremely high end items, as the fee would be ridiculous. So currently they have a Crocodile Himalayan Birkin for sale for $350,000. Who do they think would spend enough money to buy a house on an item that’s listed as final sale, with no return insurance option, based on a description and six total listing photographs? I would hope they’d not put that bag into one of their crappy dust bags, throw it in a box with no padding, or God forbid, send it in a plastic mailer.

I I just really appreciate buying from the real real by sending in a ton of ugly expensive crap, just earn consignment credit and purchase items. my $2,800 Chanel bag probably cost me $250 worth of stuff that I sent in. I've never paid actual money

I bought two pairs of sandals from TRR recently. They shipped me one even though they said they shipped both. I called them. They said when they went to ship, they couldn’t find the other pair. So they just said, sorry we will refund you and give you a $25 credit. So, not sure what would happened had I not called them or why they said it shipped but didn’t. It really left a sour taste in my mouth.

YES!! I buy a LOT at The RealReal and their shipping methods are terrible! A several hundred/thousand dollar item just tossed in a box in a flimsy dust bag. Very disappointing!!

Wow...what a hassel to return to TRR. Pay a fee for the insurance for "just in case" but if I keep the item they will keep my insurance fee. That is just too much going on. Lol. I have other options so I won't be using TRR unless they are the ONLY place selling what I'm looking for. Wow. Lol

They have always been a ripoff in my opinion. They sent me a bag described as a few scuffs. It literally had two holes in the leather and the front pocket was full of human hair clippings and I mean a lot of hair. Had to file a complaint with PayPal to get refunded. Who does that?

Sheesh! I have been trying for weeks to talk to them about selling an LV lambskin tote and maybe a Noe GM, but they won’t call me back. They gave me a fine quote on the Noe but I cannot accept if they don’t respond. TRR, what the heck is going on?!

From their lack of decent photos alone, I’ve never been a fan of TRR. I actually went to their store in Chicago last year and it wasn’t the best experience. It’s since been closed…so that be the start of maybe not so good things.

Ebay sellers are also getting very lazy about how they ship items. They charge very high shipping fees and pocket the excess money after using shabby packaging and cheap shipping services.

I just purchased a LV bag they described as very good. It is not. It has scratches, the corner are rubbed raw. I was automatically charged xcover but since I didn’t order cancelled it. To get a refund they want my personal bank routing number which is a huge red flag. My purse also came in a giant box. I’m disputing it and am most likely stuck with a crap bag I won’t use. It looks like a thrift store reject. Im not ordering from them again.

The bank routing number is legit in this case. Since they're a third party they don't have access (I'm assuming) to the payment method you used with TRR so they need your bank info to deposit the money there. It's an unreasonably slow process but you do get your money back.

I will not buy handbags from the Real Real because of their no return policy which they have had for years. At this point, I will not buy any item that says final sales and definitely will not pay the extra money. You should have to work so hard to see their pictures. I believe their lack of picture detail is intentional.

The Real Real turned into the TEMU of Pre-Loved Luxury. They are HORRIBLE. The Hermes skirt I ordered came read size 42 in the picture. The Real Real never disclosed that the previous owner must’ve machine washed the item, it looked horrible and with their new policies I can’t return it. BEYOND TACKY. Not purchasing from them anymore. Just because they have an issue with profit and returns doesn’t mean I should pay for it as a customer. This was clearly deceptive and didn’t sit right with me. Plus the new paying THEM to return an item 👀🙄🤦‍♀️💆🏾Tell me your BROKE & in financial trouble 💅WITHOUT saying it !

The Real Real is trash! I'm looking at a blatant fake LV bag right now and I've had to fight with them in the past to take down blatantly fake bags so I don't trust them (plus their pics suck). I have that scarf In a different colorway and I love the comic design.
