In this video I go discuss all the different species of land hermit crabs kept in captivity. These include the Purple Pincher, Ecuadorian, Ruggie, Viola, Indonesian, Aussie, Strawberry, and Blueberry crabs. I hope you guys enjoy the video!

Great video! This would have helped me a lot when I first got my hermit crabs!! A note for all Aussie owners is that Aussies love seafood, and the only crabs you can get in Australia are Aussie crabs and strawberries.

I'm from Maldives and I've never knew people keep them as pets maybe because they are so popular in here.....Like our beaches are full of them...Lastnight one Viola hermit crab came inside our house which is even bigger than my palm...

I just started watching your videos so I may have missed this topic, but if you haven’t done it yet can you do a video on how you clean your hermit crab tanks. Just a tutorial on what should be cleaned or changed and when(how often) I just adopted a hermit crab and I am still learning. Thanks!

Great video. Just one thing though, in my country, most people have Indo hermit crabs. However, they are exactly the opposite to what you say in the 'Other' section. Here, people say Indos are the most shy, inactive species that rarely come out to do anything. And I also agree with this as I have Indos myself. (They are rarely seen) So I wonder... If hermit crabs have different personalities when placed in different countries!

What are rare in your country are common for my country, I live in Indonesia, we have C. brevimanus, C. rugosus, C. violascens, C. cavipes, C. lila, C. perlatus, etc

I got hermit crabs in may of 2020 and I did my research before I got then I see them every time i go to Florida and wanted to save as many as i could and there still alive I just found out that mine are purple pinchers I didn't even know tell know so exciting.

Fun Fact: Sometimes Indos are mistaken with their larger cousin/species of all the land hermit crabs, the Coconut Crab. Specifically the juveniles as they look identically similar to Indos.

My purple pinchers are very active at day I have a net in my tank and they are on there ALL DAY about they are probably sleeping between 10 am and 6 am

I think I have purple pinchers but in the pet store it said "fancy crab" but they appear to be purple pinchers so maybe they're just fancier variants.

I know you're probably not going to respond to this comment, but what would you say is the best way to give purple Pinchers protein, grains, and or any other nutrients they might need besides fruits and vegetables

There is a new species that are just gaining popularity in Asia called lila which looks extremely like blueberry but from se Asia and pretty cheap and easy to come by. Still I do not support trading wildlife but that is a cool species anyway.

Looking to get a couple of crabs.... i had one as a kid and did not realize they were social creatures. Obviously fresh food is ideal but sometimes i travel for work and may be away for a week or two- any tips? Would this be a deal breaker? I have not gotten any other pet because dogs/cats/snakes need the attention, could the food pellets with a timed dispenser suffice for work trips? Thanks for including activity levels, didn’t think about how my crab as a kid was mostly nocturnal! I feel so bad now knowing the painted shell from the pet store could have been bad. Luckily it didn’t live in that shell forever.

I have a 36-in tank with three purple pinchers in it currently, I'm just going to guess that if I find hermit crabs at the beach I can't take them home and put them in there right? I currently have salt water and freshwater they can dip themselves in and I plan on getting bigger bowls soon so the water source wouldn't be an issue but I'm guessing the hermit crabs I find at the beach don't really coexist with purple pinchers right? If anyone can answer I would deeply appreciate it

I also have a crab that has lost it big claw and one that’s really pail and has a tinted purple claw I think it a pp I was wondering What I should do for my crab that has lost its big car because when it falls over I can’t get up it’s getting stuck a lot it’s still enjoying it’s life though so I don’t know what to do to help it it’s also very active

I don’t there is much you can do to help. Many crabs have survived after losing their big claw, it usually grows back after a couple of months.

Can you please help me!!! My cat went inside my hermit crab enclosure and I thought my cat had done something to mango (hermies name) but then I remembered that it’s possible for him to be digging in the substrate right?? While moving the enclosure to a higher place I saw Mango in the bottom of enclosure buried… What should I do😢😕 I think he’s maybe molting?

Question: I have 2 hermit crabs (1 female and 1 male,) my female is a purple pincher but my male I cannot seem to figure out what species he is! He’s got close to the same color claw as my female does but the rest of his body is lighter in color. Is it possible that he could be a mix of purple pincher and some other species of land hermit crab as well?

No, we’ve never seen crabs mate with other species. He is most likely a PP and just not eating enough foods to give him the darker colours. If he’s got a purple claw, he’s a PP.

Sorry if I’m bothering you, but I have some questions. I bought my hermit crab 3 months ago, and lately it’s been inside its shell. 2 days ago one of its legs broke off and since I have felt it moving but he hasn’t came out. Today I haven’t felt him moving but I haven’t felt movement. Is he dead?

Possibly, wait a few days and see if it starts to smell bad. Dropping limbs is a sign of serious stress.

Us Chain Pet land usually carries like 20+ and on a flat sand box and i always end up finding one or two there. Once I even found an Indo !

I did a lot of digging on the Playsand... Quickrete is a commonly agreed upon brand. I found mine at a Mendards, personally.

Can I ask where you get your hermies? Whenever I get them from pet stores they are usually already unhealthy before I even bring them home

I got most of mine from pet stores. Yes they are unhealthy, sometimes they don’t make it a month. I have noticed that if they survive their first molt they will usually survive.

I was at south padree and there where all these crabs dead and alive in these little plastic thats with not water or food in painted shells I bought 3 went to petsmart there in a 20 long and have already switched shells

I need help with something! So I went to my local petco one day and saw how awful the tank conditions were for the hermits! I had already had 2 so I got one. He was super fragile and tiny and SO pale. I've had him for close to 2 years now, he has molted a couple of times, they all eat better than I do, and the tank conditions are PERFECT but this poor baby is still SO pale! I thought he was sickly but he molts and he's very active in the tank. Do you have any idea why this would happen?

It’s a different species than the others. Maybe it’s an Aussie, they aren’t as big as other species of land hermit crabs and they are light in color.

I need help pls help me I got A new hermit crab about two months ago within the last month and a half all but two of my hermit crabs have died I do not want to get any more hermit crabs but yesterday the hermit crabs that I still have one of them ate the other one they were moldy I don’t know what to do I’m not bringing more and you need a friend so I’m planning on giving it away but I don’t know how long to wait before giving it to them to make sure that it doesn’t have a disease pls help me

Im late to the game, but with talking to a few people It's been impossible to get blueberries into the US or any other country for 10~ years now. They're banned from export and are considered national treasures in Japan, such as how bald eagles are considered a national treasure in the US. Any overseas seller that claims to be selling blueberries are actually lilas, which are very similar to blueberries, but have differences.

Legs dont broak when they are going to molt

Losing a leg means that they are stressed. You should working on getting all of your care requirements correct.

Nvm I had a strawberry hermit crab and all the other crafts were purple pictures so they did not like the strawberry crab because they were not that kind of crap so they killed it .it was sad
