I personally want to believe this is all Bdubs doing. He is the only one with the means (in theory), the ability to cover it up, and the motive. The means: His Moon Base. I theorize that it is actually a magical shrine which, when activated, will manipulate time and space to pull the moon towards the planet causing widespread catastrophe to the overworld. The ability to cover it up: We all know he the the only hermit who obsesses over sleeping as soon as the sun begins to set. He wants us to believe that it's to keep mobs from spawning. Personally, I believe its to hide the visual of the approaching moon from the hermits for as long as possible. The motive: Revenge against those who continuously pick on him and steal what is rightfully his. Specifically Pearl and Keralis for the clock heists and thefts. Additional evidence: - the windows and main lookout (from the bedroom) of the moonbase face Keralis' home, likely the direct impact target. - His eyes resemble the moon in both shape and in beauty. - He has a secondary KZfaq channel called "BDUBSwithCHEESE". What is the moon made of? That's right! CHEESE! - Etho even confirmed (last season) that BDubs is the hermit that smells like cheese

My favorite theory is that so far this season of Hermitcraft has been played inside a world simulation run by Grumbot who's trying to do something nice for the server after they built a simulated world for him to help his mental recovery after the traumatic events of last season's Mayoral race. Grumbot would essentially have been keeping everyone safe and entertained until the new 1.18 version dropped, then everyone would wake up in a pod in their respective season 8 bases which Grumbot will have built in the new version for them via Scar's robots from last season, basically trying to make the server transition as easy as possible.

Ok theory, the moon is caused by Helsknight. At the beginning of the season he said he would destroy the server, and so far all we've seen him do is run a restaurant. It would be nice to see him show up when they try to fix it.

Well, Derp Coin is doing so well on the server that the whole Hermitcraft 'planet' is heading straight for the moon. I don't have a complete theory as to why the moon is growing, however like most of the comments, I'm 95% sure this has to do with 1.18 coming out on Tuesday. Snapshots began having more bug fixes around Nov 3rd, which happens to be when the moon started growing. Can't wait to see where this lore goes. Edit: also want to mention the tremors that have been happening periodically, again, I think this could be leading up to a major earthquake/moon impact, causing the new terrain. I do recall Grian and Mumbo mentioning that they're all starting on the same continent, then spanning out with the new terrain (in episode 1) when the update comes.

Following up from what you said about Grian making time travel canon, I think that in Grian’s next episode he will find out that the moon is actually getting closer, making him use his time machine from season 6 to time travel to when it started growing to stop the moon and save the server. He will then somehow mess up and send the then-small moon spiraling toward the island and find out that he was the reason the moon is getting closer and boom 1.18 terrain. This probably won’t happen, but it’s a cool idea nonetheless. Who knows, maybe it could even tie in with the Octagon technology or the evil x stuff

That's why everyone built up there mega bases so quickly in such a short amount of time, in dreams events appear to happen far quicker than normal. My moon theory is that the moon is getting larger due to Evil Xisuma. His plan to destroy the hermitcraft server is to use his magic to crash the moon into the world, which may or may not have to do with derpcoin such as use of derpcoin is causing the end of the world. This will conveniently transition the rest of the world into the new terrain through the geological chaos the moon caused.

A theory I have is that since the earth is shaking as well as the moon is getting bigger, it is possible that the moon actually getting closer, causing the tectonic plates on the sever to start to shift causing the mini earthquakes and eventually when the updates come out, the earth is going to split and cause the massive caves to appear, or causing the plates to converge and form new massive mountains.

the moon's shape/texture doesn't matter, it's part of individual texture packs. The size is what's changing via the shared server pack similar to the way everyone can see the same custom hats.

My theory is as follows: Single Upset Event (AKA Cosmic Ray hitting the machine the simulation's on) made the moon's "speed" value drop/rise by a 2^n amount a month ago, being just enough to cause it to approach the planet's surface, meaning it'll hit shortly after 1.18 drops publicly, giving Xisumavoid an excuse to modify the version and with the in-universe explanation of "tectonic shifts, etcetera" and possibly an in-lore explanation of "Hermatrix crashed".

When Caves and cliffs releases, the moon crashes, but before that, Octagon builds a shield generator that covers the mainland. All other land is rearranged by the moon landing, and the bedrock is simply pushed down by “Moonrock”(Deepslate). Wether or not there will be a crash site is up for debate.

My theory is that whenever the Octobrothers opened the Octagon and they caused all that lightning to shoot across the sky it was so powerful that the energy from the blast was capable of reaching the moon and since the opening it has slowly been increasing in size. (They didn’t do it on purpose, purely accidental) and it will eventually explode due to energy buildup leading to the shift into the caves and cliffs update.

I think that the moon isn't getting bigger, but CLOSER, hence why it LOOKS absolutely massive now, and due to the moon's gravity, and the hypothesized reaction of two intersecting planetary gravitational fields, this would also explain why the ground keeps shaking, the moon rock that hit Ren dog's phoenix farm, the turbulence some people have experienced during elytra flights, and the random bouts of jump boost and slow falling effect that several of the hermits have experienced lately. I also can't help but think of the connection between the moon and the watchers, from on the last life server, which have been confirmed to be the watchers from Minecraft EVO, which if it is somehow connected, would mean Grian might be somehow be connected, even if he doesn't know it, or doesn't remember it, or chose to forget it or something, and since Impulse, Pearl, Mumbo, Ren, Tango, Scar, Bdubs, Cleo, and Etho were also part of that series along with Grian, they may also be somehow involved. Also, all of boatem, two thirds of big eye crew, and half of octagon were in last life, and doc's new tech is refered to as "shadow" tech, and the watchers in last life were also known as the shadow, these last few connections are speculation and possibly - correction, PROBABLY coincidence, but if they aren't, and lets remember that thanks to Grian, Ren, Impulse, Doc, and Scar, time travel, space travel, and parallel dimension/universe hopping are possible in cannon, meaning that this is feasible, which would mean that all the series the hermits have been in could be other planets, different timelines, or alternate realities, which, since Gem and Pearl are on the Empires SMP, which is HEAVILY lore driven, could make that storyline part of this Minecraft Multi-Verse, which connects very well to this theory too because empires includes many players that were in Last life, and it directly links to this show Because the regular narrator for recap, Pix, is a player on the Empires SMP. and I see now that I have gone on a tangent with this theory but I don't care because I think it's interesting and that it is possible, if highly improbable, that this information is relevant and I am posting this theory anyway in case anyone else likes it or thinks it may be relevant.

I had a wild dream last night in which I accidentally killed grian, then took his stuff and proceeded to flee for a solid minute before trying to escape down the Goatem hole and dying in the void

My theory. The moon is expanding and its gonna explode, shooting loads of asteroids at the server and forcing them to flee into season 9. Story ideas that probably won't happen, but we see that it not just the season 8 world that was devastated by metiors, but season 9 too where the event has already happened eons ago. The meteors created the new cave and cliff structures, a new moon was born because why not its Minecraft physics don't matter, and they adapt to the new "post apocalyptic" world which is literally just the Minecraft world because it pretty much IS a post apocalyptic world. Luckily, thanks to it being alot further in the future (because Grian brought time travel into this world) the devastation is not as bad as it was in season 8.

Ideas for what is gonna happen. The moon might make life on the surface "unplayable", forcing the hermits to live entirely in the new underground for a long time. B-dubs the master sleep wizard sacrifices himself by going into a coma to prevent the moon from rising ever again, thusly banishing it.

the big moon is an easter egg. you can actually shoot it with a sniper rifle to make it bigger but it has a limit. after that, it will reset to normal size.

My own guess is that Zedaph is behind the moon expansion. So far as I know he is one of the few hermits to not acknowledge what's happening. Moreover, he is the server's resident mad scientist so it makes sense. (And, yes, I realize there are others on the server who could take that title, but Zed has a clipboard and he said the word Science five times in the first twenty seconds of his last video.) Making the moon bigger is interesting but impractical... Which is exactly his style.

1.8 is literally making the world deeper i.e the world is expanding thus the tremors. the distance between the world and moon is thus getting closer making it look bigger/closer.

Plot twist: The shaking and "moon" growing has nothing to do with the moon and tidal quakes stretching the world out, or even any _current_ hermits. That's not even the real moon; It's a fake with an underside that simply happens to look like the moon. In reality, It's going to end with a giant crash, a strange new valley and its surroundings appearing as the false moon lands to utter devastation outside the main continent, and when everyone goes to investigate there will be a rumble, a cheer, and then a familiar voice will announce... "Previously, on Zisteau Plays Minecraft." Who's let's play world, after all, was last seen rising up into the sky and is well known to rumble ominously.

I’m confused on why less people who believe in the watcher au for hermitcraft are talking about the fact that in that au some people say there is something protecting the server from the watchers gaze, the moon crashing into the server in this au would cause the protection barrier to break, letting the watchers watch the server.
