During the summer holidays I used to hang around Herne Bay seafront when I was a kid. My ambition was to be a bingo caller but was to shy to ask. I was a real nuisance. I would collect pennies that had fallen from the one armed bandits through the wooden floor at the pier entrance. I had a friend, he was a couple of years younger. He would take a bag of pennies down to the beach and skim them across the sea. His father owned one of the arcades on the seafront. I asked him "why are you throwing your money away". "Because I can" he replied. I thought he was a bit of a mug. "Why don't you throw a pebble."
