This must be one of the best video's from Herons I have watched about Maples in a long time although I did hear Peter say that Deshojo Maples can be hard to grow from seed but I have bought Deshojo seeds from Herons on two occasions, the last was in late 2023 and on both occasions I have had from 98-100 % germination rate so these seeds are worth buying from Herons as they are fresh picked at the right time of year and is much better than just buying from some sites on the internet that may be questionable at best.

Thank you Peter for the education on growing Japanese maple bonsai. Now I know what to do with all my maple seeds. I growing them on the ground first to produce a thicker trunk quicker and then pot them in a large pot. Just bought some seeds on a white willow tree, let hope it will germinate, fingers crossed. I never seen a white willow tree before so I decided to bit the bullet and see what happened. Take care and stay healthy, Peter, and thank you for the lecture on Japanese Maple.🙏🙏🙏

After several decades of bonsaï practice, I could not agree more: for our climat zone (Western Europe; I live in the Netherlands) you should not overestimate Akadama soil. Nothing wrong with it, but do not overestimate it. It may be great for example in Japan, with its rainy seasons, but those are really different circumstances. But, I do use it as a part of my mixtures. By the way: it is my strong belief that drainage is by far the most important when you put small (and young) trees in small pots. Furthermore: Akadama soil is quite expensive these days and I have learned that the price in Japan is about one third of the prices in our regions... There is no need to make your hobby more expensive then necessary, I think... Even more: I think that bonsaï is (or can be) one of the most cheap hobbies. I salute you, mr. Chan, keep up the good works!

From seedling to mature maple...and everything in between. There are countless lessons contained within this video. Thank you for sharing your wisdom and lifetime of experience with those of us who wish to learn. It was a pleasure meeting you at the nursery yesterday. I'm the one who has transitioned to mame and shohin sized trees...and shared a photo of my large azalea in full bloom. Appreciate you taking time to speak with me and hope you find your way to Vermont when you next visit the US.

This video is great. I agree growing those maples from seed is so easy. I tried after one of your videos. There's a Japanese maple in a local park. I picked seeds from that tree three times in autumn. I put them in a pot and let them outside all winter. You can get hundreds of seedlings from a hand full of seeds. It's really fun. While I admire the big old trees I found that growing trees from seed is what I enjoy most. I only bought very few trees and never enjoy them as much as the ones I grew myself. It does take a long time but I came to enjoy even the very young trees. The maples already look great after two years.
