Herring Cove Beach on Campobello Island is called a bayhead barrier beach. It formed over hundreds of years as storm waves eroded the headland bluffs at the far end of the beach.
Longshore drift results from waves arriving an angle to the shore. The waves push sand up the beach and to the side. The backwash pulls the sand straight down the shore. This sawtooth motion of longshore drift moves material eroded by the waves and forms barrier beaches like this one.
Freshwater blocked behind the bar formed Lake Glensevern and provides a sheltered habitat for birds and other animals.
