Pacific Herring gather to spawn in the 100's of thousands around Vancouver Island on British Columbia's West Coast. These fish are a huge factor in holding the bottom of the food chain together for the Pacific Northwest and the worlds coastal ecosystems. Almost every living coastal creature will take the opportunity to feed on herring including Orcas, Humpback whales, other dolphins, salmon, cod, halibut, countless, birds, sharks, tuna, seals, otters and so on. We need to let the herring thrive to help the rest of our oceans to thrive.

Really cool to see this, in puget sound we’ve been trying to rebuild lost spawning habitat for our herring from years of dredging the sea floor. Forage fish are key to the survival of salmon and steelhead, for food and to help balance out predation on migrating smolts by offering another meal.

That is incredible. Their must be millions of herring in that spawn. I can just imagine how many eggs are laid in the beginning for that many to survive till spawning time.
