According to Merriam Webster dictionaries, the word Carousel is actually a synonym of the word Merry-go-Round, so there's officially no difference between the two funfair rides! Both mean the same thing; every carousel can be described as a merry-go-round, and vice versa.😊

Interesting. I thought a Merry-Go-Round had animals that did not move and a Carousel had the animals that moved.

I inherited an old carved carousel horse with glass eyes from my Mother who loved carousels all her life. Because it was in use for so many years, you can see through the layers of worn paint, it's many lives as it was repainted over and over into a different colored horse.

I worked in the carnival business most of my adult life. I am now 60 years old. From what I know the word carousel is from the phrase "carry us all" and merry go round was the name of a piece of playground equipment. I think over time merry go round became something of a slang term. I'm not saying I'm a hundred percent right, but I have worked with several carousels in my life. Thanks for sharing your trip. Would love to visit the museum myself some day.

Two other carousels with brass rings other then you mentioned are the Greenport Carousel on Long Island and the other one you were actual near is Gillian's Wonderland Pier in Ocean City, NJ. I LOVE carousels! Having grown up in Santa Cruz and having the wonderful Looff carousel at the Boardwalk, I got spoiled. My favourite horse on that ride was the laughing “stargazer” stallion. I know they’re considered “tame” by most amusement park goers but I see them as interactive art. How often do you get to ride a piece of art? I started collecting carousel art in my teens and at one point wanted to make them and restore them as a career. Unfortunately it wasn’t an easy line of employment to get into during the early ‘80s, we were still very short of the Carousel Art Renaissance. Thank you for this video, it was a real treat!

Carrousels spin counter clockwise. Merry-go-rounds spin clockwise. Its to keep your right hand on the outside to joust, or to grab the brass ring. The ones with other animals are called menageries. There are six Herschell Carrousels dotted around Broome County, NY (Binghamton area) that are all free to ride, thanks to local industrialist George F. Johnson, who bought them for the enjoyment of his employees at Endicott-Johnson shoe manufacturing. Some are now over 100 years old.

I grew up during the 1970's so I remember visiting Crystal Beach Park many times before it went out of business, closed up and everything having to do with it was auctioned off in 1989. Some fun stuff: 1. Crystal Beach is still there (obviously.) It was so named because the sand there has a lot of silica in it, which makes it sparkle in the sun. Condominiums now inhabit the former amusement park site. 2. The park had a "Laff in the Dark" dark ride, accompanied by an animatronic "Laughing Sal." I don't know where she is now. Anyone..? 3. Sweet treats from the Crystal Beach era that can still be purchased in Western New York include sugar waffles (a pinwheel shape made of thin and crispy fried dough), loganberry drink (wear purple while drinking it in case someone jostles you) and Hall's Crystal beach suckers, still available in their original flavors of cinnamon, coconut, peanut, lemon and butterscotch. (The nut flavors really have coconut and peanut bits imbedded in the candy. Eat those gingerly or you risk slicing up the corners of your mouth.) After the closing of the park, other fruit flavors were added, including...Taa daaa! Loganberry! 4. The park had a magnificent menagerie carousel. The horses were auctioned off piecemeal in the last years before the closing of the park in an attempt to keep the rest of the park financially afloat. Makes me sad. Almost as sad as...oh, never mind.

I just find your videos awesome buddy!! I don’t think I’ve ever saw one that didn’t peak my interest! Great job Jacob! About the video you made about being bullied and picked on, I too am a veteran of abuse and being bullied! I went through hell in school, I was constantly bullied, spit on, made fun of, had someone actually piss in my shoes during PE, we had to take our shoes off in our new gym, so we left ours in the locker room, and had several jerks pee in my new tennis shoes, the class of course all laughed it up, all I could think about was how hard my parents worked to buy me those Nike shoes, and here they were ruined after just having them a couple days! I had several students strip me down to totally naked and over power me and drug me outside and locked the door to the school!! I went through hell, but one thing I can say is I never lost my faith in Christ and God, they may beat me up on earth and while I’m here, but I have all eternity to be with the father, son and Holy Ghost, to enjoy!

I saw multiple carousels with a variety of animals from across the globe on them in my time. They're most common at zoos (if you find one with a unit, that is) One I went on when I first visited a zoo I've never been to before was one of these examples, but the one animal that stood out from the rest was a dinosaur (no joke), so ofc I picked that one; I felt like I was riding a Yoshi lol quite the unique experience. Another strange but unique piece was a double-decker unit at a mall, which made a reason for me to wanna go, but then I found out it's since been removed and I was crushed. There's also the art of kiddie carousels, another rabbithole worth delving into. From ones at mini play areas at stores and malls to the local arcade, you can't go wrong with these tame and whimsical works.

Such a fascinating place! And a big piece of our past, kind of a trip back to simpler days. Thanks for the video!

Good morning Jacob, I looked it up because I had to know...According to Merriam Webster dictionaries, the word Carousel is actually a synonym of the word Merry-go-Round, so there's officially no difference between the two funfair rides! Have a good day, and thanks for your videos!
