That's one of the tragedies of WWII that has been overshadowed by the other horrors of the war. The best known case of the loss of a holotype due to bombings is of course Spinosaurus aegyptiacus, whose original set of fossil remains was lost when the Munich Museum was destroyed but that's just the tip of the iceberg, the losses were enormous

@@TomsBigSpiders I started out with around 10 individuals in an 10×10×10 inch cube terrarium. The terrarium had an extreemly fine mesh ventilation cos i did not want any tiny spiderling to escape. Sandy substrate and small roots i found on the beach. They seemed to thrive and produced lots if offsprings and hunted and lived together fine for a couple of years. I did not noticed any problems i terms of cannibalism and such, but it may happened? But nothing i never witnessed. They seemed to live in peace.

H villosella was the first tarantula i tried pairing. It was about 15 mins of absolutley nothing happening, then he started drumming a little. She turned around and faced him. 5 more mins of nothing happening before she slowly crept a little closer and stopped again. Then out of nowhere she burst forward and grabbed him and started dragging him in to her tunnels before i even had the time to react. Poor little guy didnt stand a chanse.

She's lush Tom 😍 n thanks for the recommendation I pulled the trigger n bought a barbarous growth enclosure and I loved them so much I now have 6 of the 8x8x8's , I fill the holes with hot glue it covers perfectly but is flexible enough to not mess with the lock or door I just use a bit of plastic to stop the hot glue falling through the gap then set it with water n remove the plastic n it works really well. Great vid as always you 2 n thank you for sharing 😊

So glad to hear that you have got a female of this species now! Very nice rehousing, shows how chill they are. I know I’ve mentioned it before, but I raised 6 as a part of our little lab study. We got them in May 2022 fairly well-started, 4 females and 2 males. One male unfortunately died as a sling, the other matured around February. Sadly, he just passed away yesterday also :( It was my first mature male death and death of a sling that I had raised all the way to adulthood. I did pair him with 3 of the 4 females (the other was still too small), so am hoping for an egg sac or two. My first attempts at breeding and I very much just winged it, so we shall see. I’m glad you mentioned in your podcast recently some of the reasoning behind why it is so hard to find breeding information - it’s too bad folks feel they need to keep their processes under wraps. I get it, but it would be nice to see more info out there. If I do get an egg sac I’ll post a breeding report to Arachnoboards. They grow and mature so quickly! I found that they were excellent eaters as slings and juvies, taking pretty large prey items. But they have slowed down a little as adults. Hoping for many more good years with the females.

Hi Tom, good video as always! H. villosella is the smalest T. I keep at the moment. But I've had mine since 2016 and a bunch of them. They are keept communely in a big 12*12*40 "bio-active" enclosure with some plants and moss. In the middle of it is a big half rotted tree stump, some bark around at the bottom. And I keep them not to dry. It works great over the years and I breed them successfully in there. They are cute little spiders and I never had any defensive behavior from them. And yes, an absolut great as old world beginner spider. There is also a great video about them from "bugsnstuff" in tanzania. Hetherothele gabonensis is another wonderfull dwarf from africa, looks much like H. villosella but with some blue colors. I'm sure you know them or have them to. Stay save and have a great week! Greetings Chris

Hello, Chris! How large is yours? These guys seem to stay fairly small. And I'm SO glad that you chimed in with the communal info. This was actually the spider I was looking to set up in a communal waayyyy back when I got my M. balfouris. Maybe I'll have to give it a shot someday, as it would be quite cool. I will definitely check out that video...thanks as always!

@@TomsBigSpiders Hey Tom, they stay small, two "big" females in there are around 2,5cm BL / 1 inch BL the rest is smaller. But I don't see all of them, so maybe some are also that big. I don't set them up like m. balfouris, they need more room for each other, and the live more side by side, web by web and tolerate each other. The jung ones are sharing food amongst them. They need planty of hides and enough food. In this setup I have almost no losses. Thx 4 your responce and I hope my answer helpful. Have a great sunday! Greetings Chris 🤘

I have had the same experience transferring webbing along with the T to the new habitat. My Orphnaecus sp. Made a tunnel under some bark to connect the two spots I had transferred some of her old webbing. Was really cool. Both of my P. murinis have done similar things too just not connecting the two spots. By the way I love the H. villosella. I have one juvenile and one larger sling. Great webers!!

another great rehouse....... You had mentioned on the podcast that you were possibly looking for topics to cover this summer. I think a great topic would be tarantula inbreeding: is it harmful or not? This may require a guest with some experience in spider genetics, etc. but it'd be so interesting! A lot of experienced keepers say that there are no issues with breeding siblings. However, nature has put in some fail safes to ensure this does not occur naturally (e.g., males from a sac generally maturing much sooner than the females). Perhaps inbred T's suffer from issues that are just not readily apparent to us as keepers. Is it possible that inbred T's are more prone to some of the sporadic health issues that we see in our collection (e.g., impaction, random deaths, DKS, etc.). Just throwing the idea out there...... thanks for all the great content!
@TomsBigSpiders

Hey, Chris! I currently have 15 of them, and I've had no issues. That said, someone else said that they had the same problem that you're having. It doesn't seem to be a common issue, but I'd be upset if I got one. I think that "The Thing" is probably the best done horror movie off all time. Great suspense and effects!

Hey, Sean! Yeah, I kept the first one bone dry, but I worried after the fact that could have contributed to her death. By giving them just a moist corner, I give them the choice. They are such cool little spiders. Yeah, unlike my podcast, only a fraction of folks actually finish the videos. I've had people comment "Awesome video, I love it!" five minutes after I posted a 20 minute video. haha This kind of gives me an idea of who the folks are who actually enjoy watching my stuff.
