The thing with the 2x2x2 folds thing is that you do get 8 symmetric sections, but they only meet on 4 lines of each type (you technically get 8 meetings, like with your first one the loops and the points). We see it as 4 because we see the individual half shapes as whole shapes. If you punched a design in each of these sections, you'd see it easier... and it'd be helpful to have them centered and symmetric (as adjacent ones are mirrored)... which is easy to do by folding it in half again.

Saying 2x2x2=8 proves that 3 half folds makes 8 lines of symmetry is as logical as saying 2+2+2=6 so 3 half folds gives us 6 lines of symmetry. Both are equally wrong while both can be considered right by any fool. Think about it this way: if you fold a peice of paper in half Once it has one fold of symetry despite having 2 symetrical sections Fold it in half Twice and it has 2 folds of symmetry despite having 4 symetrical sections Fold it in half Three times and it has 4 fold of symetry despite having 8 symetrical sections So yes, 2x2x2 (or shall we say 2 to the 3rd power) is 8 but the fold of symmetry are actually 2 to the (n-1) power where "n" is replaced by the number of folds because 3 folds does not give you 2 to the 3rd power of symetry - it gives you 2 to the 2nd power lines of symmetry. Similarily 4 folds gives you 2 to the 3rd and 5 fold gives you 2 to the 4th.
@noyz-anything6 жыл бұрын
Thanks! IMO n-sector symmetry is more intuitive than n-fold rotational symmetry, and i was SO confused of why the dilemma was. The people in my replies were no help (too complicated) but you captured the essence perfectly.

... if you did 2x2 it equals 4 and if you did 2x4 it would equal 8 so imagine it like this (2x2=4)x2 = 8
@RB-kr6jo5 жыл бұрын
it also depends on the symmetry of your cuts, if you make symmetric cuts along each edge it can have 8 fold symmetry after a total of 3 folds starting from 1. Each cut you make to an edge affects 2 adjacent edges. So any fold symmetry is lost to only if edges from the centre are unevenly cut, in which case you get the 2same 2 different pattern cutting your symmetries in half = 4 fold snowflake.

Of course you could just try for hexaflexabacon. Sadly you would have to do it with limp bacon, not the crunchy nearly scorched kind that I like. Oh, hexaflexafondant cake decorations. Maybe? Yup! The biggest direct link is the line about "forum for baloney snowflake truthers". There is an actual forum for Flat Earthers, and conspiracy theorists in general are called "[topic of theory] truthers". Trying to sum up (what I think is) the message Vi is sending in this video in a few words is hard, but I think the main point is that it's *always* important to be open to discussion that counters your own belief (so long as the other person remains respectful to you, too).

Interestingly, 2*2*2=8 is actually correct - the symmetry group of the resulting shape is the dihedral group D_4, which has 8 elements. Only half of them are rotations, the other half are flips. You can see this easily by observing that a single flip produces a "snowflake" whose only symmetry is a two-way reflective symmetry
