had this idea randomly thinking about my future beehives i wanted to build and why no one seemed to build them like that. im so glad im not the only one to think of it, i would have liked to see a brood frame though, just to see how they shape with it and how much honey reserve they have on that frame (looking to keep in colder areas) but im loving what im seeing in the idea so far. great video

What is surprising is the bees don't attach the comb to the sides of the lower main hive structure....The bees build the comb only on the removable upper 3 sides of the removable frame even though the main hive structure is only a few millimeters away from the outer edge of the comb. As if the bees know the comb is going to be removed from the hive and are cooperating with the purpose of the hive structure for comb harvesting.

They never attach the lower part of any comb like never ever period excepting when they ran out of space in a dramatic way but as you can see there are not so many bees in that colony

How do you keep the queen separated from the honeycomb? So that she make brood comb in the same comb as honey is stored?
@praiseworthy
@praiseworthy Жыл бұрын
Because the Brood is like Rigby ball it is usually in the middle and the side you find honey most of the time. Then the queen lays egg and stay in the middle, not interested on the side.

Very cool and interesting this type of box. I would like to ask some questions: How much honey does such a hive produce per harvest? Do you put wax on for the bees to start pulling correctly? Here in Brazil, the most popular option for hives is the langstroth box and the placement of honeycomb wax.
@beekeepingnaturally4580
@beekeepingnaturally4580 Жыл бұрын
Hi, thanks for your comments and questions. It's really impossible for me to tell you how much honey any hive can give you, It all depends on the colony, the amount of nectar available and many other factors but because the comb is crushed and strained after harvesting, I do get less honey than I would normally get from a Langstroth hive that I spin the honey from the combs. No I dont use wax foundation, the bees build natural comb. Yes, the most popular hive here in Australia is also the Langstroth hive.

With the heavy metals the cocoons from the baby bees and everything in that old wax, why do you want to produce honey in those? Why do you just cycle them out as brood frames and replace with new top bars. Maybe remove them early spring late winter once they are empty? Seems like brand new wax with brand new honey is the golden ticket set up. Cool hives all around though thank you for sharing. From a beekeeper in Lexington Kentucky, I’m enjoying your videos.
@beekeepingnaturally4580
@beekeepingnaturally4580 3 жыл бұрын
I start to cycle out old brood comb about 4 years after I introduce a swarm and over a couple of seasons I manage to get it all out. usually the combs still have small amounts of brood and honey at the top so pulling them out completely doesnt feel right for me, moving them across slowly does the job just fine.

@@josephmungai1799 African bees are way more aggressive.. I have similar problems in South Africa. Our flowering season begins from from August.. the bees are usually very aggressive from Aug to about Oct when they begin to settle down. I've had to run for my life more than once when they sting me through my clothes😂.. smokers don't help at all with those angry hives. The good part about the hives that are more aggressive.. those are the ones that will produce lots of honey. The mellow hives are the ones I worry about for their own survival

@@jansmit327 oh, I didn't know that. I have been watching these beekeeping videos from the US and Australia and it leaves me confused. Coz my bees, as you said, will absolutely sting you through your clothes, they go for the ears first, then the head.... But I agree, the most aggressive hives are the ones with the best quality honey. Another thing, our bees here do not make nice, perfect combs, mostly, they run against the bars and it is difficult to separate..
@jansmit327
@jansmit327 Жыл бұрын
@@josephmungai1799 That is interesting. We sometimes have hives that work criss cross with everything connected.. to renew those hives by placing them in a new clean brood box is a nightmare. Lost a couple of those over the years.. but luckily it very rarely happens. @@beekeepingnaturally4580 I don’t have any videos but I’ll try to upload some photos to Imgur and share! The lid gives two inches clearance above the bars, all around plus there is additional clearance in the middle since it slopes from a point. So I could do a shallow cathedral bar set, replacing the flat bars I have now. I used all rough sawn cedar 2x4’s so it’s pretty well insulated.

Hi Rachael, they are European honeybees not stingless bees. I get stung sometimes but I try to avoid it as much as possible. Its got a lot to do with the way I interact with my bees, if I go in with respect and patience, move slowly and not treat them roughly I usually get out without a sting but that doesn't always work so sometimes I do get stung! Hahaha.
