Love the keyboard arrangement on this song. You don't always realize how well he can play when it's usually "the voice" that's talked about.

this is perfection..just pure talent..no over production..nothing to distract you from his voice and his playing..no costume with sparkly crap..no gelled hair..this is how a person lamenting a lost love looks like in the middle of the night... ....this is true communicating to an audience from a true artist...more artists should perform like this

Oh my, how was I a fan of Michael McDonald and missed hearing this song. HIs voice will go down as one of the best in the last 100 years. I'm glad that I came through this life the same time as him. When life is hard, I listen to Takin' It To The Streets, or Real Love, or any of his hits, and just feel better. What a gift he shares with the world.

The duets strength is deluded with overblown orchestration. The song, written by C. King/G. Goffin, succeeds far better with a stripped down arrangement which McDonald used on his solo version. Michael McDonald's version IMHO is by far the finest to date.

one of the best live concert recordings I've had the pleasure to listen and view. Notice how this singer doesn't hide what he has and music supports his gift. Too many live concerts do not bring out the voice, but drowned it out with the instruments.

We saw Michael McDonald tonight in the very small venue of Rock Hill South Carolina. We see many concerts of all kinds. It's our thing to do. By far, this was the best concert we've seen this summer. We got to meet him too. Poor man was soaking wet by the end....a very humid night in the deep South. Highly recommended for a very soulful and spiritual experience...

I just love Michael's voice. I find it amazing that he is gifted to have a voice with such feeling, and coupled with being able to tickle the ivory keys of the piano while singing is phenomenal! I have heard people describe Michael's voice in different ways, but I just read a comment below that is the best yet. Someone said Michael's voice was so unique and powerful that he can "do it to you" with his voice!" Now, that was an amazing description. In Michael's best interest, I'm sure he's glad that was only a concept and left only to one's imagination...LOL!

I've checked out the Freddy Scott, Billy Joel, George Benson and the Ray Charles/Michael McDonald (even mikes earlier 'fast' version) renditions of this tune, and to me Mike has arrived at the definitive version here (almost 50 years later!) by slowing it right down to inject the proper level of feeling into the lyrical subject. I don't think the song was ever meant to be a 60's slow groove, cocky crooner tune - I think it was really meant to be a pleading, slow burner ballad all along. Just goes to show how the right tempo and arrangement can really spark a tune.
