The fact that you do not have a Yagi antenna in your garden, does not stop you taking advantage of the ones that other stations may be using. Tour UK Ham Radio Store www.hamradiost...

One of the reasons people in the UK had yagis was to work the USA while rejecting European QRM using the front-to-back ratio. Old radio amateurs always said that was why you needed a beam. It's why mini beams like the HQ1 were popular, even though they probably didn't have much forward gain because of the loading. With modern receivers, the QRM is less of an issue unless it really is right on the same frequency. One trick I found was making dipoles from aluminium and putting them on a short pole on the chimney. An aluminium dipole for 15m was much better than a wire one just because you could get it up higher. The wind loading was minor and it wasn't worth rotating.

Good points. I've got an end-fed half wave at about 5 metres and worked a guy on 15m who had a "six over six over six". Now that's a yagi I'd like to borrow!

I've got a Mosley TM 33 up 25 feet and it does exceptionally well.

Very true sir, and this happens to me very often. Me on a halfwave vertical and 10 watts of RF power. This person I was talking to in Brazil have 6 element Yagi on more than a hundred watts and he was so excited for me having a low power station and I was 5x6, 5x7. Little did he know that the advantage was on my side because he may have no idea that he was pulling my signal. Thank you and all the best.

Nicely put explanation. It reminds me of my usual response to the “Should I buy an amp or a better antenna?” question. I say buy the antenna first because it’s like you got an amp for you AND everyone you are trying to hear.

I use a 110m doublet. I get the "Woah Big Signal" several times a day. Sometimes a massive doublet is almost as good as a yagi on the higher bands.

Yes a great antenna.

What is the height and orientation of this doublet that can compete with a yagi. I’m curious

@@JayN4GO When you're talking 4wl it starts getting a lot of porcupine spikes, I have mine oriented towards the rest of the US and the other side is pointed at Asia and Australia.
