We took a guided tour of the HH55 Catamaran at this year's Annapolis Sailboat Show. You can tell by looking at its sleek shape and daggerboards and it's all-carbon fibre design that this catamaran is built for speed and sailing performance.
Usually, with a performance boat, you end up with very slim hulls with very little in the way of comfort and cabinets to carry the numerous belongings that you would need to live full time on a Catamaran. So, usually, Janice and I are not huge fans of the performance focussed Cats as a full-time liveaboard option.
This boat was different. The furnishings were beautiful and comfortable and the cabins and heads seemed spacious enough and well-appointed. We were very impressed, but, what does all of this performance and comfort cost?
Watch the video to find out what we thought of the boat and see if you like it enough for the price you have to pay, to make it your next boat.
If you found the video informative our helpful, please like and share this video.

Scott provided the Best Walkthrough I have ever seen on any channel... He Explained Capacity, Weight Limits, Daggers, Sails, Engines, Etc, better than anyone thus far... Most simply call it out by name... Scott provided Much Needed Technical Info... Moreover, he litterally utilized his 6' frame to show us Scale... High Praise For That... Two 👍👍 For Scott... Blueprints for Scale and Technical Info per item is always necessary... (Hull Stability, Daggers, Sails, Engines, Weight Capacity, Fuel & Water Capacity, Draft, Beam, "CABIN DIMENSIONS", Etc... All are Necessary in order to make an informed decision... Great Presentation From All... Loved the boat... Still researching the Fastest-Larger-Cruising models... Viewed a fantastic one owner 70' custom cat in Italy... Unfortunately I've never seen a custom to date that didn't have substantial flaws... Usually drainage... Full disclosure is a problem outside the US... Heck, if full disclosure isn't covered in a purchase contract, it's a problem in the US....

Excellent video. I especially appreciated your editing and showing video of the boat while talking. This is exactly the type of cat I've been looking for; the marriage of performance and cruising. For an all carbon boat, including cabinetry, the price, while high, seems very fair. Good job to all three of you!

The H&H is a very nice design, the best design you have posted in your blogs so far. It was once the purpose of catamarans was to be fast but comfortable and now most factory built catamarans.are great hulking slugs that can barely sail down wind and are no better than the square rigged ships of the 16th century. This H&H is a Greyhound among blotted cows. You could even outrun approaching storms and point upwind but much faster than most mono hulls. This H&H is more a work of engineering art than just a catamaran. Thank you for the time and effort to tour this best yet catamaran!

Agree completely. There are 3 things people look for in a Cat. Decent Price, Good Performance and Interior volume(Comfort). You can't get all 3 in one boat. This boat tries to focus on the Performance and Comfort so you need raise the price for that.

Thanks for sharing another great video. One of the most common laments I hear on videos of sailors is "the wind died", or "the winds were light" so we had to motor. With a performance cat I would think that even in light winds (4 to 9 knots) you could be moving over ground at almost the wind speed (depending on the point of sail); that would have to be a nice option. I like that this design had hulls wide enough to put in comfortable cabins and beds while minimizing weight to keep this cat in the performance category. It had nicely protected helms as well.
@Bowmans-Woods

I agree that a light performance cat can probably sail in much lighter wind conditions than a heavy production cat.

I have to say, that is one of the best laid out boats I have ever seen. Very efficient use of space. Everything, controls and equipment is incredibly well thought out. Along with the carbon fiber layup makes it worth every penny...if you CAN AFFORD it! About 4 times what I will be able to afford if and when my plans become reality. The e-glas 50 might be a slight possibility in about 4 years for a used one. (assuming I have any retirement left in 4 years...)

I think that he's a very good salesman. Even though he knows that the HH 55 is way out of their price range, he treats them with respect and gives them a proper tour. At the end, he mentions the lower priced HH boats. Talking about out of my price range: every now and then I look at Gunboat 68 videos 😀 As much as I like Gunboats, I don't like the interior helm station. I much prefer being out in the breeze like the HH 55. But having to go down through the cockpit or round the back to go from one helm station to the other could be a bit of a problem. My many years sailing A-Class catamarans, out on the wire with a 10' tiller extension, has probably affected my perceptions and made me a bit weird. Which leads to the question of rotating masts. An aerofoil shaped rotating mast cleans up the air flow over the lee side of the sail and you get a huge increase in lift. However, it's not just as simple as providing a rotating mast step. You have to make sure that all stays and shrouds, everything that goes from the mast to the deck, doesn't get affected by the rotation. We solved the problem by having single point on the leading edge of the mast where all the stays and shrouds attached. Maybe it's not as simple on a big cat? The HH 55 hulls look like they could handle the extra power. Is it a cost thing? All in all, this is a very nice boat.

There are definite pros and cons of both helm positions. A forward helm has easier access to the lines and sails, especially the main. Aft helms are much better protected. Forward helm can get swamped by a big wave. It's more exposed. Aft helm seems significantly safer in multiple ways. It's interesting that HH will do either as an option for at least some models.

Great tour by the agent! Video is great. ( use that WA lens you other YTubers) One thing that you did a little of here but that I'd like to see even more of, is how you access things. I know a lot of boats have removable ceiling panels to access things and I'd like to see a panel taken off and put back on. There are stories about other manufacturer boats that have problems with the ceiling panels. I think showing access to critical systems and how easy or hard it might be to actually work in that spot are important in a tour video. I also wish reviewers could get a hold of a model of the boat where you could show what's below the water line. Shape of hulls can make a big difference in how well a boat heads into the wind and how easy it's blown off course. Love a boat with daggerboards. In college I used to sail the 30' Shields keeled sloop. I bought a NACRA 5.8 catamaran to sale in places like Long Beach (aka Hurricane Alley). I'm retired now and in poor health and watching these video tours and sailing videos is my way of seeing the world. One negative about a lighter boat is you feel the wave action more and that can be tiring and make people more prone to sea sickness. If I were sailing a light boat, and could afford it, I would definitely go carbon fiber for its extra strength and rigidity. One question I would have though is repairing carbon fiber and how it compares to fixing fiberglass. Janice looks to be into Retro and I'm guessing a fan of Bettie Page, and maybe Dita Von Teese? I did several shoots with Dita when she was starting out. Her original website used mostly shots of mine on every page. Her Gallery was full of other photographer's work. She told me of her dreams back then and she has FAR, FAR, surpassed them and her stage shows are still in demand. Once in awhile I'll still see magazines with her on the cover. If you ever read Atomic magazine Dita has been in that as a center fold. I shot two centerfolds for them, Lana Landis and Kelley Rarey (her shot is one of the most popular I've ever taken.)

It's an ungodly expensive boat but it's also incredibly impressive. This is the first performance boat I've seen which doesn't seem to have sacrificed any of the liveaboard comforts. Usually the hulls are horribly narrow or the beds are way up in the air with barely an inch of headroom but this looks extremely comfortable. I would be temped to alter the upper deck interior layout a little and I'd have like to have seen a bigger solar set, electric hob and possibly hybrid drive but all of that would be pretty trivial to fit (she is semi-custom after all)

Great walkthrough. It IS interesting to review a boat designed for 'other' factors, like speed (light). Bit worried about carbon fibre maintenance (DIY?) and insurance, but if you have to ask... Also, the search for lighter is either more expensive or under-sized components (tanks, generators, etc.). This seems like a great balance though and the hull design with rigging is beautiful!
@Bowmans-Woods
@Bowmans-Woods 4 жыл бұрын
Good points Brian. If you do have a chip in your boat, you may not be able to patch it yourself if it is built our of Carbon Fibre. And, yes, as soon as a Cat seems focussed on performance it usually is very sparse inside when it comes to Cabinets and storage areas to minimize weight. This boat seemed very comfortable. A good balance of performance and comfort. Just wish we were rich enough to be able to afford it. I am sure a few viewers are and they may get a lot our of this tour video.

It is gorgeous. He may (or may not) have explained the Cycles correctly. I think the point is, if you pay extra, you can get a boat that is universal and will take either European or North American shore power and convert it. Im sure you wouldn't want both types of plugs in each cabin as that would be a waste of space and wiring. You would pick your appliances to match your home country but at least you would have the peace of mind to know you can plug in anywhere.

Love the HH 55, but i would get the Helm indoors. My reasoning is that it completely frees the lines from the roof (Load up solar panels). Also the aft cockpit completely opens open for lounging, still retains tons of room indoors and finally will go with an owners version. Also these are made in Vietnam i believe so that why costs are lower compared to the new Gunboat 68 (also completely carbon fiber) which is now made in France and price is 6mil+... woooza. Either way you need deep pockets but the HH can be called a bargain in the deep pocket world of fully Carbon cats.

What a beauty. If I had the means to order one I have some ideas of how I would change the design of the salon to suit my needs and wants. Not much to dislike about the rest of it. I am with Craig regarding the sunroof. If that big thing is open and a rain shower rolls into the anchorage, you better be quick to get things buttoned up. We didn't see it operating. I am guessing that it isn't quick.
@Bowmans-Woods
@Bowmans-Woods 4 жыл бұрын
Yes a nice boat for sure. The sun roof is huge. Nice to check out your sails while underway I guess, But, when he said it causes a lot of heat to come in from the sun, I figured he knew best. I also think that if there is even a chance of rain, you would certainly always keep it closed. Again, it is a huge opening and would let in a lot of rain quickly. I am sure you would not leave it open while open ocean sailing as you wouldn't want the salty ocean spray coming into your salon. So I am guessing it would stay closed like 95% of the time except for a calm sunny day. I am sure that is an expensive option that I would certainly skip if I was paying the bill.

@@Bowmans-Woods Living on the West Coast, a nice sunny day can suddenly have a 5 to 10 minute rain shower- while it is still sunny! I've seen the same thing in the tropics. So, I agree. It's an expensive option that would be best left an unchecked box on the order form.

We Canadians are tough and a bit crazy. ha ha. I agree that is the downside of Carbon Fibre. It is more expensive to buy the boat originally and then probably many times more expensive to get any hull damage repaired. But, I assume if you are fairly rich and want an all carbon fibre cat, money is probably not something you are worried about.

From the angle shown the engine compartments access looked quite cramped for such a large boat, and you didn't seem to have a problem with all the lines being exposed to the weather and deteriorating on a 3m dollar boat as you did on a 600k Seawind 1260 ! It was a pity the Seawind sales rep wasn't have as good as Scott. He was excellent !
@Bowmans-Woods
@Bowmans-Woods 4 жыл бұрын
Well I did notice the exposed lines but it seems to be something that the performance cats have. Difference here is the lines were not on the deck where you need to walk. Walking on lines is sub optimal IMO. Big difference when on top of the roof, although I would prefer they be hidden. I saw that they also covered a bit of the solar which I thought wasn't great either. Performance cats tend to want to eliminate weight at the expense of having lines exposed. It is what you expect. We wont be getting a performance cat but I can fault them for the design choice.

Yeah, $3M is kind of a hit. I was interested in what Scott was saying about the E-Glass 50 and the keel system on that. Winglets? I've always wondered what a cat with a set of foils or larger winglets would do, particularly on a broad reach or downwind sail. As to the appearance of the boat, and I realize it's a custom, so I could change it if I wanted to, I don't like the stark white interior. If I was going to live on a 55-60' cat, I want something that's 'warm and cozy' and this boat didn't tick that for me. Craig, something I've seen from Yanmar, and I would love to see it adapted to a catamaran is their 80-SPP drive system. A steerable pod system with a bow thruster, it uses a joystick control to run the engine and the bow thruster together. Currently, insofar as I'm aware, it's only available to monohulls. However, if it could be adapted to a catamaran, you would have some fantastic controllability for docking, or even 'position holding' if coupled to your GPS. Anyway, a bit out of my price range. Besides, I want a Privilege. I hope they had one at the show and you got the ability to view and tape it.
@Bowmans-Woods
@Bowmans-Woods 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks Gary for writing in. The interior surfaces are painted so I am sure you could get it painted in a warmer colour. There was a Privilege at the show and it will be shown in an upcoming episode. I think it was the last boat we filmed. We liked it a lot, but its above the price of many of the boats we filmed (except this HH), so I doubt we will be getting that, but, it maybe perfect for you. Again, if we had deeper pockets, we would have a much broader range to chose from.

This boat is pretty custom so I am sure if you are getting one built new, you could pick whatever engine maker you want as long as you don't mind the upgrade cost. The reason it was 12 and 24v is the start batteries are 12v AGM but the house batteries are 24v Lithium ion.

One of the things I always wonder about all of these new boats is the lack of hard points for life lines. Either they don’t show them on the tours or they don’t exist. If I have to go up on deck in big weather I want lots of hard points close enough together to transfer life lines from hard point to hard point without ever being unclipped. The distance between hard points should never be long enough that it requires lanyards that would allow you to be swept over the edge of the decks. Being drug to death along the side of your vessel is not a great way to die. You are faced with drowning while attached to your boat or pulling the emergency release and drowning watching your boat sail away without you. Also most life lines should be called death lines as they are usually just the right height to send you head first over the deck into the water. I would sooner have taller masts and shorter sails to have decent height life lines and stantions you can hang a truck off.

@Bowmans-Woods 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks. We’ve seen videos on the 1600. It seems totally focused on performance and not so much on comfort. So it’s not really a boat that we could get excited about. We figure we will spend 95% of our time at anchor so a boat should be comfortable. We almost don’t care as much if we lose a night or two getting a big comfortable cat versus a performance cat

I really only see the benefit in having two helms is if you are coming in to a marina or a dock and you want to be steering from the side that you will be docking on so that you can judge distance better. But other than that. I would always opt for just one helm. There’s no need to spend all the money to have everything duplicated on both sides.

Cruising Off Duty I agree. I think though there is a customer base of “rich” weekend sailors who want the two helms as a “racing” thing... and spending the extra money is an ego boost. It’s showing off. To them the two helms is like the two sinks for Janice.

@@ptroy72blue. We are still about 3 years away from retirement and based on our expected budget we will most likely go with a used Cat so it is impossible to know what will be available on the used market when we are seriously ready to buy. We have some builders that we really like but the question is …. Will any of them be on the used market and will they be in our budget. My gut is by the time we are ready to go we will either be in a recession or just coming out of one (due to a fiat currency crisis or collapse and inflation problem causing the FED to finally raise interest rates). In a recession luxury items like Catamarans drop significantly in price so we may be able to afford a much better boat then, than we would be able to afford if we were looking today. Boat, just like houses are way way overprices right now. So, sort of glad my retirement date is 2-3 years from now. Is this boat worth the 2.5 - 3 million dollar price? IMHO, no, unless you don't need to ask that question. At 1.5 million, half the price, I would prefer the aluminum Garcia 52 Explocat over this cat even though the displacement weight in the Garcia is more. For bluewater cruising/exploration, it's a tank, is also very rugged and stiff, can sail in the high teens in moderate winds, also has the twin headsail, solent style rig, and also has the forward facing cockpit for forward seating. And, it's a Garcia. Thanks for this review.
