I bought my 1903 in 1970 and have hunted with it (open sights) ever since and its still in great shape, better then I am for sure! Always respect the 30-06. It's a "1-shot-1kill" cartridge. Except for removing the peep sight and placing a open sight, it's still in the same shape as I bought it. Thanks for bringing it back and showing us the "old-dependable"!

Thank you, you have helped me learn and appreciation and respect for the 1903 Springfield. I picked up an A3 Sporter that I do not plan on parting with. One day I would also like to find a Krag Jorgensen to also enjoy as a for everyone gun. But again thank you for helping this late bloomer (purchased first firearm at 64 years old) learn how to appreciate your knowledge. If you are ever in Myrtle Beach, SC would love an opportunity to shake your hand.

Thanks for tip on the sight. My Dad gave me his U.S. Marine rifleman's instructor and score book from 1937 that he was issued. The book was used with the 1903 and the 1903 was the rifle he carried during WWII. Took a little while, but I found an all original Springfield 1903 with post 800k s/n.

these things are loud and very powerful. we had case of 12 of these things when I was growing up in the woods of Virginny, and on a stupid lark one day, my buddy and me used an oak tree for target practice. This tree was 100 years away and about 2 feet in diameter. Well sir, the blast from that gun got the neighbors down the dirt road about a quarter mile away real upset. And the tree? The side it went in had about a 6 inch gash, and on the side the round came out...there was about a 2 foot chunk of oak blasted away. I cannot imagine what the noise of 500 or 600 of these things all be discharged in battle would be...maybe that's why my WW1 uncle was deaf. And what it would do to human flesh is postively grizzly. Thanks for the video .45.

That rifle, is the stuff of my dreams! Literally takes me back 100 years when I touch one! The actions are Superb, the sights fantastic, the ergonomics wonderful! I really love the '03 so much that when and if I get the chance to own one, whom ever has a good one, is welcome to ask me for which ever modern arms I have in trade! Passed up on one I found for $1100 dollars, it was, for its age, in almost perfect condition! Kicking myself for that mistake. Good video thank you.

I've got one, 1934, all original from 1934. Bore and rifling looks like it was cut yesterday. It has its original green park finish. I'm guessing the park is at 95%. The copper fouling in the bore was green when I got it lol! Not a spot of rust on it. I call it the holy Grail.

Nice '03. I have one very similar to it, with the bayonet. Mine is also in the 1,000,000 million range with a 1918 date. Maybe they shared time in a rack together? Your stock is a WWII replacement, likely originally made for a 1903A3, as evidenced by the lack of grasping grooves. The rear sight windage knob is of a type first introduced in the 20's, so your rifle is a rebuild but a very nice one. Thanks for another look at this beauty.

You have former President Theodore Roosevelt to thank for that 'wicked knife'...he hated that rod bayonet that was initially made for it, and insisted on a blade bayonet....and rightly so. I share your sense of awe and reverence about the M1903 Springfield Rifle.....if history is but a 'clash of arms', then this is one of the most historic of the American 'tools of the trade'.....you can feel the history in your hands...and given care and respect, it is an exalted thing to fire this weapon at the range....and as far as the 'cool factor' goes, I defy any American male who gets to operate one, not feel a bit like Gary Cooper or Steve McQueen....thanks for this Part 2 video.

I used to have an 03 Springfield almost identical to the one in the video. Sadly, I had to sell it when I was off sick and needed money to pay the bills. This gun was an excellent shooter and pretty much a work of art. Like most bolt action rifles of this caliber, it does have quite a recoil to it and I sometimes came home from the range with a bruised shoulder. I have bought and sold many guns over the years but I really would like to have that 03 back.

I don't want to sound like a troll, but the 03' in this video did not see action in WW I. The stock lacks the grasping grooves on the lower portion, and the rear sight windage and elevation knobs are flat not dished, as they would have been before and during WWI. They were likely made by Remington during WWII. The serial no. on the receiver is also likely too high for a WWI vintage 1903 Springfield. Still, a great and informative video (Love the 30-06!) as usual Mr. Hickock, keep em' coming!

+Un Known Could have easily been used in WWI and then refurbed, as was often the case with these surplus rifles. Yes, the stock and the sight knob were added later, no doubt.
