Yeah, and like he says, it can be applied to pretty much anything. It’s like when you’re starting out playing guitar and you want that $1000 Fender, but until you learn your way around a guitar then you won’t really know what makes it cost so much compared to a cheap Squire which in a lot of ways is just as good.

I have wanted a Smith and Wesson 686 since a co-worker showed me his over thirty years ago. For what ever reason during that time i was never able to get this "dream gun". I had resigned myself to the fact that of all the guns i have collected over those thirty plus years I just was never going to ever own this gun of my dreams. On Christmas morning the one and only present under my tree with my name was a beautiful 686 from Santa. i cried like a baby. Today I placed my first order for .357 ammo and i am looking forward to shooting it with my son for the first time after my next chemo treatment. Thanks for a great video Hickok45.

Tough decision between the two. I ended up buying both (Wife doesn’t know yet). No regrets. I always look forward to taking them to the range. They are extremely accurate and fun to shoot. They are shooting machines. Python 2020 is 4.25” and 686 Plus is 4”. I hate my Dad died before he had a chance to see and hold them in his hands. He taught me all about revolvers. Update-just got the Colt Python 3 inch. It’s awesome.

I told my boss back in the early 90's that I wanted to buy my first gun... He was a gun nut so he took me to his favorite gun store and showed me a 686-3... 6" And next to it was a Python same length but much more expensive... I had 3 Pythons that I sold. A 2.5" a 4.25" and a 6" bought new, beautiful looking weapons. The little hand that turns the cylinder failed me when I need it the most. Went and bought a Smith & Wesson 686+ 4" barrel. Then bought a 586 with a 3" barrel from Performance Center. Then found a Smith & Wesson 66F with a 3.5" barrel had to have it. All the Smith & Wesson have performed flawlessly. I do miss my blue 4" Python. I sold it to a friend of mine. He lets me look at it from time to time. Then my wife left me. Now I am happy.

I carried a Blue steel 6” Colt Python in the late 80’s early 90’s. You couldn’t beat the heft of that pistol and the smoothness of the trigger pull. The cylinder release broke while qualifying at a range day. Turned out a 5 cent spring broke which prevented the cylinder from releasing and rotating out for a reload. Glad it happened when it did. Ultimately I retired the Python and went back to my Departmental issued S&W 4” .38 revolver for on-duty carry. I loved carrying that Python though. 😎

I had the same dilemma with my favorite caliber wheel guns. The solution: my wife bought a Colt Python. I have a Smith 586. My son has A Ruger GP100. All great revolvers. Quality and shootability about the same. We purchased the Python back in the 1980's when they were reasonable. I definitely wouldn't pay twice as much for the Colt.

I've had in my possession a 6 inch 686-3 since 1989 that I paid $319 for brand new. It has never misfired and likes whatever ammo I put thru it. The best group I ever got was one ragged hole with all 6 shots at an indoor range at 50 ft. Averages 1 1/2 to 2 inch groups all day. Still looks new even with all of the magnums put downrange. No major maintenance ever done except when one chamber got out of time sending a round 3 or 4 inches from the group. S&W sent me a new cylinder at no cost ( lots of kudos to a company willing to do that) and groups are back to normal. It's a gun that just works. I'll never sell it and it will be in the family for a long time. Heard the python was having timing issues. Don't know if that's been corrected, but I just can't justify the price of the new pythons if they're defective.

He was needing money so I bought the ss 686 for $250.00 that I have now. I also have a M&P 40 w/a laser and I have put hundreds of rounds threw it and never had it to jam or misfire. My first handgun purchase when I was in college came down to my budget. I preferred the beautifully smooth double action of the Python, but it was $400 in blue compared to the 686 in SST around $200. I always regretted that I didn't buy a Python when I had more money, but I still have that 686 for some 37 years and it has been a great and accurate gun that gave me the confidence to hit anything at which I aimed. Now looking at new Python and it's more affordable relative to my pay but still hard to justify at today's prices when there are so many great guns out there.

They are both several years old but have not lost their stainless gloss or mechanical working. The 4 inch is somewhat easier to hold and handle, but the 6 inch is a hell of a pistol to shoot. Very accurate and beautiful to look at. The 4 inch has seen a little more use, but is a fine gun also. Don't know what to say to you other than that.

I made the decision today, as I purchased the S&W in 6". I got a great deal on a slightly used 686-6 Plus Deluxe (saved me $150 over new). The cost difference (NEW) between the Colt & S&W in 6" is $1450 vs. $925 respectively. I went with the Plus Deluxe (7-shot) which would run about $50 more. By the way, another difference between the two is that the Colt chambers clock-wise, and the S&W chambers counter-clockwise. If you don't load a full chamber, keep that in mind.

Why should Americans follow the socialist unions into oblivion? I'm no fan of Colt but the unions tell us to vote against our right to keep and bear arms. Get a life.

Bought two revolvers today. A S&W 29-2, 6", nickel plated, in the presentation box. And then picked up a Colt Detective Special and couldn't put it down, got that too since the 4473 was already approved. There was a very nice Python there but at $3,000 I passed. Ammo is short, there is a 24 hour wait on getting state background checks done, things are getting interesting, and not in a good way.

You got 2 guns in one day and took them home?! That sounds so crazy and free, here in CA it takes about a month and 3 trips to the gun store +huge markups to get one gun...back when you could, everything is gone now.

@@QuietMikeW I bought the Smith yesterday, state background checks used to take around a half hour, now more like 24 hours. But I could've taken four guns home today, they would've just been added to the 4473. New Hampshire is a free state, a Constitutional carry state, any lawful citizen may carry a concealed firearm without the need for a permit. Throw in no sales or income tax for good measure. Does that make you feel better? On the other hand winters are cold and long.

I always wanted the older classic Colt Detective Special but ended up with a pinned barrel S & W Model 60.

W/R/T the cylinder release, I think a lot depends on what you started shooting with. I've always found the S&W release to work backwards. But then, I learned to shoot on a Colt.

Love these new Colts so much. My new Cobra is the perfect carry revolver. I got it and a RAMI BD the same day. Then I got a Kahr T9 Elite yesterday...a couple of months later. All amazing carry guns and amazing shooters. That Cobra just stands out though.
DAD LEFT HIS OLD SOCKS ON THE COUCH…😱😂
