Please read before commenting: A very basic overview of some of the main U.S. military rifles since the 18th century. We mainly look at the evolution of the technology in primary issue rifles or rifles similar to them that I happen to own.
Since I chat unscripted without a leash for 35 minutes, you can imagine that I have a little clean-up to do. :-) I'll add needed correction here in the description below. I won't add much elaboration, as this is not meant to be a video about the entire history or everything about these specific firearms; it's more of a basics video, as I state at the beginning, to give folks something of a picture of the major stepping stones in military musket / rifle development through the last 200 + years.
Some clarification or further BASIC information:
1. The Brown Bess is a smooth bore musket, like most shotgun barrels. I mistakenly call it a rifle in the video. I don't think I mention it, but the 1858 Enfield used in the Civil War has a rifled barrel, as do all the firearms on the table after the Brown Bess.
2. The tubular magazines of lever guns are not safe with pointed bullets. Think about it. :-) The 1895 Winchester lever gun solved this by not using the tubular magazine, but with most lever guns, we were limited to flatter-nosed bullets. The bolt gun, with rounds stacked on top of one another, allowed as sharp a point on the bullet as we wanted.
3, For some reason (Brain fade), I failed to show you how the Garand loads. Guess most of you have seen it in the movies, at least, and hopefully, in our Garand videos. :-)
4. I believe Eugene Stoner was developing the AR-10 even before the '60s, but the AR15/M16 did not get into soldiers hands until the '60s, I believe.
We have videos on all these firearms. Please search from the home page for any of these firearms, and you'll find at least one video, I believe.
------------------- ------------------------ Hickok45 videos are filmed on my own private shooting range and property by trained professionals for educational and entertainment purposes only, with emphasis on firearms safety and responsible gun ownership. We are NOT in the business of selling firearms or performing modifications on them. Do not attempt to copy at home anything you see in our videos. Firearms can be extremely dangerous if not used safely.

I remember in 9th grade (2002), we had a couple Korean War veterans bring some old rifles from the Civil War and they told stories of their service and of their ancestors who fought in the Civil War (one veteran had a Union ancestor, the other had a Confederate ancestor) and it was one of the best experiences I had in school.

I recently found this channel and absolutely love it. Thanks Hickok45 for all these great informative videos. My dad loved all these old rifles and was a bit of a gun smith. I used to watch him make his own bullets and cartridges, and go to the range with him. He would've loved to BS with you. He's been gone 6 years now and I miss him. I never got into guns like him, but always believe strongly in our rights. I'm getting very interested in guns now and shooting them with my kids. I'm learning so much from these videos and I appreciate it.

Guns changed a lot through the ages, but something really struck me the other day as far as military application. The role of a man on horseback, armed with a spear or some other kind of hand weapon remained virtually unchanged from the time of the ancient Egyptians until just before WWI.

In the 2nd Slesvig War of 1864, the Danish troops was equipped with Caplocks and even some Flintlocks while the Prussians and Austrians had Trapdoor rifles. The advantage was so overwhelming that every major power rushed to the Trapdoor design in such a hurry that they tried to convert all their frontloaders as fast as possible since even minor powers didnt want to buy them. They were basically seen as useless by that point.

25 years ago, or so, in junior high (now called middle school), our American History teacher brought in a flintlock rifle. He fired a wad out of it (no ball, obviously), as a demonstration of the technology available, at the time. He did this in the school parking lot. My, how times have changed. Now, ATF, SWAT, and Homeland would be called, if he showed up on campus with one.

1:26 I've both studied a lot of history, both for fun and in school, and gone target shooting a fair amount, but I've never actually seen a video of a flintlock firing before. The delay between the flint igniting the powder and the gun actually firing is both trippy and awesome, you sort of expect the noise at the first ignition, get nothing, and then a second later see a second ignition and hear the report as the burning powder actually fires the ball. Really neat stuff.

The British Land Pattern Musket, colloquially known as the “Brown Bess”, was the most common long arm in use during the American Revolution. Due to the fact that male citizens of the thirteen North American colonies were required by law to own arms and ammunition for militia duty, the Brown Bess became the de facto standard for the Colonial Army. Many households in rural areas owned rifled muskets, such as the famed Kentucky Long Rifle, which were more suitable for taking game. While rifles were significantly more accurate than a smooth bore musket, they were not without their disadvantages. 1.) Black powder produces substantial fouling which will quickly accumulate in the rifling, severely diminishing the advantage a rifle has over a musket. 2.) To take advantage of a rifle’s accuracy, the ball must fit snugly in the bore. This right fit makes reloading much slower, especially when fouling begins to build up. When compared to conventional muskets, rifles weren’t capable of producing the same volume of fire. 3.) Rifled barrels were significantly more expensive to produce, limiting their availability and effectiveness on the battlefield.

How much do you recon a flintlock would cost back then? How much did a farm hand make.
@Jklopoppcorn
@Jklopoppcorn 2 жыл бұрын
@@earnestwebster8580 depends on the farm and where you lived, the colonies beetwen the south and New England had amazing soil for farms and the south could grow Tabacco to transport to Britain which made the most money along with cotton of course. But in order to even survive during those times you would’ve had to have a firearm anyways, to hunt for food, and for protection, as well as it being stated In law as well.

The Kentucky rifle was perfect for sharpshooters, but for standard line infantry a rifled musket would have been impractical, I agree.

I'm an actor, so I don't usually get to fire actual bullets, but I've fired a lot of real guns. Most guns are about as heavy as you expect them to be, because they're made of steel. My first modern gun was the M4A1; it's shockingly light. So is the M82. And even at high caliber, you don't even feel it. No wood, very little steel, crazy easy to fire--especially if you have a crew of weapons handlers on set. Someone handed me the M82 because I had proven to be the only competent gun guy on set. As if a total beginner, he explained, "This is safe mode," and then I flipped it and said, "This is nobody's safe mode," and we laughed our butts off.

I heard they actually called the Flintlock pistols "Flinchlock" pistols because it was very easy to flinch from the first strike which would throw off your aim before the powder burned.

All throughout high school and before I never really had a sense of time and when the 1800’s or 1700’s took place. It was hard for me to understand. But now as an adult it’s so fascinating to see these rifles and how they improved upon their designs. History is so amazing!
