For what little it's worth, having studied mathematics, it's possible that you may have never heard about (sorry, don't remember the names) supervisor or the engineer. But it's a shame that you were never taught about Katherine, the mathematician. You'd think that given the rather PC nature of college campuses these days, a true American hero like Katherine would have been properly honored and her story told within the math community.

@@crucisnh you make my point and thank you. I went to night school while working full time so I wasn't exposed to the campus environment. Even so, these women were never even mentioned. Incredibly, I earned Honors in Mathematics and never heard about them. It's just now our culture has opened our eyes to practical reality. I think recognition of people like Grace Hopper and Katherine Johnson is long overdue.

As a mathematics student I encourage you to join us!! Believe it or not we aren’t all geniuses but we do pride ourselves in perseverance and resilience. Math is a language, and just like learning Spanish you can’t compare yourself to a fluent speaker. However, if you immerse yourself in it you’ll find as time goes on how easy it becomes and how much speaking and thinking in that language becomes second nature. I firmly believe that there is absolutely no one in this world who isn’t a math person.

What an honest comment - refreshing and says a lot. That by itself gives you something many don't posses.

@@JosephPetrow Very poignant point you make. Euler was amazeballs but didn't start that way. I loved reading his writings when learning mathematics, such a fluid and easy way of representing math and its relationship to all that exists.

He had seen her work earlier on in the movie. I think he already had it worked out that she was the brains when he brought her into the boardroom.

There's a great Every Frame A Painting about screen direction and how left is backwards, the past, and right is forwards, the future and progress. When she is taking the chalk and standing up, she is to the right and moves out of frame to the right, always moving "forward". Just something I thought you might appreciate

The scene about the bathroom was probably the most powerful scene in the entire movie. It was amazing and heartbreaking

@@lilguiedo Actually that (the bathroom scene) never happened. Although they use NASA for the entire movie, these women started with NASA's forerunner, the NACA (National Advisory Council on Aviation) which was segregated. However, she used the nearest woman's restroom in her building (despite it being "White Only"), anyone who complained was told by her team leader that they basically had two choices: Shut Up, or Get Transferred. Her boss (a white guy) had her back! He knew that he was sticking his neck out, but didn't give a "gosh darn"!! He knew that she was worth 4 or 5 of the complainers combined!!! (I just wish that I knew whether or not, it was her math skills, or if he was for Civil Rights....) BTW NASA was desegregated.

The thing is that he shouldn't feel like an idiot. I think that he's some sort of engineer (though I could be wrong about that), while Katherine is purely a mathematician, and a genius one at that.

​@@dublinjazz1I used to think the same. Until i actually started putting in more effort. I have ADHD and a mild case of Dyslexia. Learning it when i was younger was an absolute pain and caused me some trouble in my personal life. My father had dug his way out of poverty by using simply by excelling at Math and him realizing he couldn't teach me this subject, caused a rift between us. It made me hate Math. For the longest time i thought i was stupid in the subject, like i would really excell at everything else like Science, Language, PE, etc, Math was the only exceptions. Me constantly thinking like a failure because of it made me drop out of college. So i went to work instead. Eventually realized after working for 3 years that i wanted a degree, so i went back in. What i realized when i went into college, older and more experienced in life was that i didn't really hate Math. I just had to learn it differently. Some people could figure it out just using numbers, i realized i had to convert the stuff into things more understandable to me. I did it pretty fast too. For example when i was young learning fractions, i hated it, when i was learning ratios, i didn't like it. But when i got older, i realized i can just convert the fractions into ratios and use 100% as my base and it worked. It was more work than necessary but it made sense to me so i just kept doing it. So whenever i had to learn other stuff, i just kept trying to find ways to convert things in my head to make it more understandable to me. It made me realize, you really can't teach one kid the same way you can teach others. Teachers have to adapt to the kid's learning patterns and that's how they'll figure out how to excell. My dad was teaching me in the same way he learned it, the scholastic way, and also under pressure. When i figured out how i processed stuff in my head, it got easier and i realized i actually liked Math because it made sense. Watching YT stuff about old Math, i found out that the way they taught Math before is not the same way we teach Math now. Like there is a drastic difference. An extra step or two added or reduced, but the results are the same. To me, it highlighted the weaknesses of the scholastic system. Where it's just designed to churn out hundreds of individuals of the populace every year with required amount of knowledge to continue to the next. It doesn't completely or in alot of cases totally ignores needs of the individuals themselves. They don't care if you learn, they just care you get a passing overall grade, even if just barely.

So glad someone else pick up on that as well.

I hear you. I wasn’t great at math but when I had to take basic statistics in college i decided I would work very hard to become better. I studied so much for that class and made an A+. I know it’s just simple algebra for some, but it was a triumph to me. Keep at it, you have the right attitude.

Maths can be devastatingly elegant. With Pythagoras Theorem, a few simple lines can prove that the theorem is correct for the infinite number of right angled triangles. I did not understand everything that I was taught but, when I did, it was beautiful.

No, he was in love with his wife.... he RESPECTED Katherine. John Glenn never saw the color of a person's skin. He saw potential in every person. He was that kind of person. RIP John Glenn.

I kind of got that impression too. He was quite impressed by her. But I think adding the dynamics of an interracial couple in this era on top of everything would've been too much for this movie to handle.

I really don't think you understood what i said. You made some pretty huge assumptions there.

Because celebrating what you were born as is stupid, that's why i say be proud of yourself or someone else but pride can only really be taken in something that's done or at a stretch thought. Pride in being a man or a woman is the same as being proud of the sky...nothing anyone does was Down to them being a man or woman, it makes no difference. People are capable of amazing Things and terrible horror's, but none of it is based on being a man or a woman. So when i say "leave being a woman out of it" I mean yes by all Means celebrate her amazing achievements, but don't celebrate them because shes a woman, because that degrades all women, as though women need to be celebrated when they do something great because they don't do it often enough?? same goes for men. Would you not agree? Seems perfectly logical to me.

@@johntucker23 in this day and age where a lot of great woman are not included into the history books simply because they are female, it is not misplaced to be proud. I thing you misplace the word as being proud of accomplisments of your own and being proud of others. They are two different things. Definition online States - It's also possible to feel proud of someone else. If your best friend gets the lead in the school play, you may find yourself feeling as happy for him as if you'd got the lead yourself. When you graduate from college, your "proud parents" will want to be there to watch.-

Katherine actually DIDN'T hit back...she and the other women were just PROACTIVE about their future. So Fortran comes along and the women were QUICK to master it--and maintain their relevance.

In this case "the system" as you call it is NASA and Langley giving them jobs and opportunities. The women just took advantage of those chances and the system recognized them. The main conflict with the ladies seemed to be the one husband and the other boyfriend. Sure, they made amalgamations of some characters to show passive aggressiveness and what not. The theme of that was narrowed down to black and white but it's really more about how academia works and people try to defend their turf. It's a weird concept if you've never seen it happen. From the first scene, you'll realize this isn't the typical '60s film but about Americans all coming together to get an important job done. "Seeing Beyond".

@@MrBen51309 No I'm not a astrophysics, I'm basing this on the fact that those 3 sisters were brilliant and the men were not, And when they finally got out of their way (somewhat)the space program advanced.

@@vlove888 The male scientists who worked for NASA were absolutely brilliant. Those women were crucial but they couldn't have sent people to the moon on their own. Btw, Jim Parsons' character never existed in real life.
