Breaking down everything you missed in Kendrick Lamar's newest visual, a short film featuring Taylour Paige for the track "We Cry Together" off of his newest studio album, "Mr Morale and the Big Steppers"
omarabdelhmd
When Mr. Morale & the Big Steppers, Kendrick Lamar’s fifth studio album, was released on May 13, one of the album’s standout tracks quickly became “We Cry Together,” as much for its raw subject matter as its slightly irregular format. (The song sounds more like a radio play or rap battle than it does a traditional hip-hop offering.) Taylour Paige (Zola, Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom) assumes the role of Lamar’s star-crossed lover - his trigger and his muse - and today the hyperreal song has come to life further with the worldwide debut of a six-minute short film of the same name.
The short film based on the album’s eighth track, in which a quarreling couple communicates both everything and nothing, was produced by Lamar’s creative collective pgLang and shot with live audio and no cuts in a single take - a fitting approach for an album rendered in blues and Blackness, woven with elements of both trap and free jazz.
“We Cry Together” (the song) was recorded in February 2020, and the accompanying short film was shot weeks later in mid-March, just a day before quarantine was mandated in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. Directed by Jake Schreier, Dave Free and Kendrick Lamar, “We Cry Together” (the film) premiered in a limited, week-long run (one screening per day, with phones collected in advance) at the Laemmle Royal Theater in West Los Angeles in June. Since then, it has qualified for Oscar consideration in the best live-action short category.
Taylour Paige spoke to THR about the creative processes behind making the tandem song and short film, Los Angeles as a setting and how the artistic collaboration came about because, Paige says, “on a spiritual level, our souls are just from the same planet.”

My ex and I had some really toxic disagreements. He is a veteran and suffers from ptsd. I have my own diagnosis and was off medication so nobody was being the adult in the room. We always fought because whenever something happened at his job and he called me he would take his frustrations out on me “I was his safe place.” I always tell him speak to me, stop talking at me because it was triggering. Anyhow, we broke up and I felt this huge burden lifted off my shoulders. We remained friends to this day. But man it was toxic 😩😩😩😩😩😩😩

Man!!! I can’t thank you enough for this breakdown of the video. For me, it’s like a free therapy session and more. This is truly the only video I have watched on KZfaq that impacts me directly and now I can see a beam of light at the end of the dark tunnel of toxicity in my marriage. Thank you. You can’t understand how timely and fortuitous this video has been in my struggles. Kendrick has been the greatest in this generation of hip hop, but I have always interpreted his songs to reflect the good and bad in our culture and the need to understand that we are even more enslaved (psychologically and mentally) than our ancestors were. This brings it down to a personal level. Thank you for helping me understand more fully 🙏🏿🙏🏿🙏🏿

We Cry Together perfectly depicts the subtleness of an emotionally abusive relationship The music video could be interpreted as just a couple arguing, but when you look at the facts, the man is 100% abusive. 1. Destroying other person's support system Lost friends, family, gained more enemies 'cause of you 2. Justifying abuse by saying, "Look at all I've done for you. You are just ungrateful" Get out yo' feelings and miss me with that reverse psychology Man, bitch, you trippin', who got you that Rollie chain? 3. Neglifying other's justified feelings Forever late for shit, won't buy shit, sit around and deny shit (Man) Fuck around on a side bitch, then come fuckin' up my shit What? Fuckin' up yo' shit? You must be bleedin' and some more shit Bitch, I don't know shit, fuck yo' feelings 4. Restriction of movement. Cutting off the other person's escape (literal or non-literal) to keep them trapped. This can be taking their car, canceling their phone plan, or just standing in the doorway so they can't leave. Man, give me these fuckin' keys, dawg Give me my keys, I'ma be late for work Fuck yo' job, today gon' be the day you walk to that bitch 5. Emotional gaslighting (this is the core of the abuse, and relates to all the other ones. Making her feel like she was in the wrong, when they both know she wasn't.) See, I don't know why you like playin' mind games with me Bitch, I ain't slow nor ditsy, I know when you bein' distant I know when you fake busy 6. Emotional abuse is not real abuse It's a split decision, broads like you and real victims This is why I love the ending. It is 100% realistic. In the end, she feels like she was wrong, even when she was completely justified.

I think honestly they were both really abusive. That entire scene where he was sitting in the couch and she was blaming him for literally everything wrong in the world wasn't pretty. To only take her word for fact is just wrong. They were so abusive towards each other, to blame only the guy sorta defeats the whole purpose of the song. Which was, to my interpretation, about how abusive men and women can be to each other.

Great video! I believe the song and video ending with sex is meant to show us another aspect of toxic relationships, and that's how sex is often used as a quick escape and a means of getting around real conversation about problems in the relationship. Couples who no further have anything in common still having dry, awkward sex because to them it's easier than just to talk it out. They stay with each other and not break up because they know the certainty of a broken, but ongoing relationship and their reliance on each other is what's shielding them from the uncertainty of the outside world and their uncertainty within themselves. Having someone who will always be with them, be it good or not, gives them a place of shelter where they can be the most true to themselves and express their inner turmoil and trauma. That's the real meaning of 'We Cry Together' - our relationship may be suffering, but at least we're not suffering alone.

In that final 'act', it is a shoe shelf that s blocking our view of some of what's happening - shoes maybe being used as a symbol for 'tap dancing around the conversation', not addressing the real issues and often using sex to avoid that conversation (See the final words of the song on the album 'Stop tap dancing around the conversation'') Maybe just coincidence, but knowing Kendrick's attention to detail I don't think so
