Humans have traveled or lived in the Southern Sierra for at least 6-7,000 years. In the higher mountains, and also down into the western foothills, lived hunters and gatherers remembered today as the Monache or Western Mono. West of the Monache in the lowest foothills and also across the expanses of the Great Central Valley were a second group, the Yokuts.
In the late 1700s and early 1800s, Spanish began exploring the edge of the Sierras. Soon afterwards, trappers, sheepherders, miners, and loggers poured into the Sierras seeking to exploit whatever the mountains had to offer. By the end of the 19th century, San Joaquin Valley communities increasingly looked to the Sierras for water and recreation. In the struggle between all these competing interests, two national parks were born that became what we know today as Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks.

Fantastic film about Sequoias. There are so few left. We should be planting as many as we can. It is wonderful to be able to watch these images if one is so far away that one does not have the luxury of getting there. What an immense priveledge to be able to explore the Sequoia forests. There are a few small ones planted in England. They are a global treasure. We all need to cherish them. Thank you for going to wall the trouble of creating this film.

I live in the central valley and have been going to Kings Canyon since I was 9. I also go to Sequoia many times as well. I've been to Yosemite and even though it is beautiful, theres way too many people and the cars are smogging up yosemite. I love Kings Canyon because i think it is even more beautiful than Yosemite and to me, it's like a hidden jewel that hardly any people who aren't native californians/san joaquin valley residents know about.

Thank you so very much for posting this. I've been to Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks many times and love it there. It is where my spirit dwells. Excellent coverage. I'm currently burning my campfire memories incense so I feel more at home with the scents of cedar, pine, and fir. :)

Was here in 2009 (hitting Takopah Falls and Moro Rock) and aside from the fact that your video is, well, moving video, some of what I saw here could have been taken straight from our photos. It is (though slowly changing) still a mostly timeless place.

That is Buck Rock Fire lookout, located in the forest in-between Sequoia and King Canyon National Parks. I am not sure exactly when the forest roads will open, but it's usually in late april. Here is a link to google maps www.google.com/maps/place/Buck+Rock+Lookout,+Hume+Lake+Ranger+District,+CA/@36.744111,-118.858852,15z/data=!4m2!3m1!1s0x0:0xfa36bbaa842c6d71

This video could use some good narration. It shows a lot of awesome sights with nothing to give you a deeper understanding of what you're looking at.
