Hidden Treasures Inside a Gilt-Bronze Bodhisattva | Christie's

Chinese Works of Art specialist Cecilia Zi describes her delight at discovering the mysteries within this rare Xuande-period gilt-bronze figure of the Bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara.
‘My first impressions were, “Is this right? Is this too good to be true?”,’ reveals Cecilia Zi, Chinese Works of Art specialist at Christie’s in London. She is referring to the first time she encountered this rare Xuande-period, gilt-bronze seated figure of the Bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara.
Zi and her colleagues spotted the sculpture when they were doing a valuation visit at the property of Soame Jenyns, the former Keeper of Asian Art at the British Museum. Little did they know then that there is more to the bronze than meets the eye. As our specialist quickly discovered, the figure is hollow inside and the base is sealed with a copper plate.

Being around a beautiful object may perhaps evoke the feeling in this life that all is well. However, a friend of mine who has been called a bodhisattva told me that she hates the samsara. She wishes that it were not so. Being stuck in a kind of limbo until all the bad karma of every sentient being is paid for by the dharma and good karma of bodhisattvas is an ominous thought. In Buddhism the good news is up front - the unity of all living things and the peace of meditation. Looking deeper are many discouraging and depressing principles - like women begging to be reincarnated as men in the next life. In Christianity the bad news is up front, but it is realistic - no one is perfect. But looking deeper we find more reality and hope: both the material and the spiritual are real. Your pain is real - not illusion. There is a creator who cares about you, As a good father takes responsibility for your bad karma/sin because you can't make it right - like a child with a broken window. So he came once to earth to pay as Jesus Christ. If you accept this, you can walk with him in blessings here, and into an afterlife of bliss after only one life.

Pretty, but any real buddhist with that much extra money would want to help sentient beings rather than collect fancy items for themselves.

Don't get too caught in the idea of what a 'real buddhist' is. You can help other beings AND care for yourself enough to create objects of inspiration like this which will help further silly.
