Ironic that you cannot add the Sonos speaker to an Alexa speakers Group! What were they thinking??

Nice Video. Thanks. Quick question; If you’re listening to music via Sonos and then you summon Alexa. What happens to the music? Does the music volume lower so that it is in the background while Alexa’s voice is in the foreground? Does it pause and wait for Alexa to finish talking? Would love to see a demo of it working after the initial setup shown in this video.

Thanks for explaining the options! Got it to work with a cable. The only annoying thing though is that it plays the last song played on that specific Play 5 and not the songs I played in my group previously. Eventhough I added the Play 5 to the group. Hence I dont get a album cover shown (I play from Spotify), but an cable icon as artwork

Thanks for this post. I wanted to use my Echo Dot with Alexa on my Sonos Play 5 upstairs and move my Amazon Echo down to the kitchen where the speaker sound will be just fine. Using the Sonos Skill worked fine for playing music but as you stated all other interactions with Alexa and via the Echo Dot...not that great sounding. So...I went with your advice and plugged in a cable to connect the Echo Dot and Sonos Play 5, it works but after Alexa stops talking I can hear a noticeable hiss coming from the Play 5? I've tried different cables but it can still be heard. I wondered if anyone has experienced the same and what might be the problem and if there is a solution or fix please? Although its only a very low hiss...now that I've heard it I'm kind of listening out for it and its driving me nuts!! Most people don't notice it until I point it out!

maybe this is a dumb question but does the music/audio come out of the echo AND the sonos speaker at the same time? cuz I like the sound quality of my echo just fine so if I got 1 sonos speaker I'd like to be able to use both at the same time. is that easy to do?thanks.

Not a dumb question (I don't believe in those). As far as I know, the answer is no. When you use the "Sonos Skill" with the Echo, it just plays the music from the Sonos, not the Echo. When you use the line-out on the Echo, it cuts off the sound to the speaker inside the Echo. I don't what happens when you use the complicated Github thing, and it's so intimidating that I'll likely never find out. When you use a Sonos One speaker as the Echo, then the answer is yes. Music will come out of the Sonos One and any other Sonos speakers you may have.

Sam, can I connect 1 SONOS ARC SOUNDBAR with 2 ECHO STUDIO at the sides for Dolby Atmos ? If yes, how do I do it ?

You should ask SONOS tech support, but my guess is that you cannot do this.

just begginning with building my alexa.... my question is will it tie into my guitar as an amplifier .... basically im lazy.... and depending on my mood and my range of different genres of entertainment in my home i want to just sit down grab my guitar and have it amped up without the need for all that guitar equipment...... an on command audio system that will encorporate it all together would be great for me and my wallet..... any suggestions Sam ?

I don't think this is possible. The concept is nice, but in reality trying to do something like this with today's technology would be a big pain in the butt. Get a $50 pawn shop guitar amp and call it good.

If you have a pair of play 5 in the stereo configuration, can you still put a line in from a dot and it will play on both speakers when apraxia speaks?

I don't own two Sonos PLAY:5's myself, so I can't test this for you. But, I just read through some posts at en.community.sonos.com and from what I gather, the answer is yes. You should hear Alexa on both PLAY:5 speakers if they are in a stereo pair, and an Echo Dot is plugged into one of the line inputs. Just be sure to use a stereo cable, like this one: amzn.to/2AjvbxS

Hey Sam! Have Echo Dot successfully connected to Sonos 5 via hardwire but now Alexa is very soft. Have the Line-In Source level set to Level 10 (high) and the auto play is on. Auto play volume is at max as well as the Sonos 5 itself. Thoughts?

I have Play:1 & 3 so I don't need the cables. But just so we're clear, the Echo does work on both 1 and 3, right?

You can use the "Sonos Skill" in the Amazon Echo app with the Play:1 and Play:3. This lets you send music to your Sonos speakers by talking to an Echo.

The Playbar only has an optical audio input and Ethernet ports, so unfortunately you cannot plug an Echo directly into it.

Arg! I tried discovering my playbar from the Alexa app. No luck. I also tried enabling the Alexa in the sonos app - voice services -> learn more -> set it up now -> and it sent me back to the original screen to learn more. Any idea is how to get this playbar connected?

There is no way to use a cable with a PLAY:3. The "cheapest" cable solution for you is to buy a used PLAY:5, which sell for around $250 USD. Obviously, because of the cost, this is not an appealing solution. But, the plus side is that the PLAY:5 sounds dramatically better than the PLAY:3, and you'll have multiple Sonos speakers, so you can do multi-room audio, which is lovely.
