I understand why they would want to salvage low back ground steel. However I disagree when they salvage ships that are grave sites with the men skeletal remains still inside of them.

I see the Malaysian Govt impounded a chinese salvage ship that was salvaging steel from the Repulse and another British warship both were registered wargraves, possibly the Malaysian Govt chartered the chinese company to salvage the steel, bet I get some hate for tiese comments!!

That sub surfacing @ 5:30 is not a German U-boat; likely a Gato class allied sub, easily identified by the holes in the front along with the diving fin.

Ahh great spot. Funny that made it in as the source is supposed to be German Atlantic newsreel lol

Lothar Guenter Bucheim in his book Der Abschied (The Parting), about his trip on the nuclear ship Otto Hahn with his old U Boat Commander, Heinrich Lehman Willenbrock, records a comment by Willenbrock about Deadlight. He spoke of the irony of having to repair and prepare boats for sea whilst in captivity in Norway after the war, so that "die Tommys" could could sail them out to Ireland and sink them. Part of the logic was that the allies didn't want all that scrap steel flooding the post war market.

I've always wondered why the surviving U-boots weren't scrapped, for the many tons of lead and high-grade steel they contained. The answer remains unclear.

Maybe they wanted a cheap place to store them for later use. (Joking)

Maybe there was a considerable amount of cutting edge technologies that the allies hoped to exploit?

I find it funny it was Brittan that said it was it was more economical to sink them than it was to scrap them. Considering they'd benefit the most from scrapping them.

You know, I just never thought of this until I heard your list just now...but no, I guess I haven't ever read about any battles involving a German aircraft carrier. It's just one of those thoughts that never crossed my mind, until you rattled off that list telling me they did not have any. No wonder they never found a way to land in England. They had to launch every plane they had from clear across that channel.

Yep they got decently far into making one but ended up cancelling it and scrapping the hull I believe. If you’ve ever played World of Warships it is very over powerful! As always, thanks for watching and have a great rest of your week :)

I will never understand the scuttling. Britain was massively shortvof steel yet dumped very high quality German steel in the sea. There were thousands of demobbed soldiers seeking work and cutting up u boats would have provided employment.

Was quite an interesting decision to make! I definitely selfishly wish they had been preserved. Appreciate you watching and have a great week :)

Didn't the diesel contaminate the ocean from the sinkings ?

The fuel was likely pumped out. After all they were being towed with no crew onboard, so they had no need to make their own power.
@WildBikerBill

Also, when this was done, recovering the fuel likely had little to do with being eco-friendly and everything to do with the cost of fuel being so many British £ per ton.

Such a waist of resources when sinking these subs, I would have thought the steel used would be valuable for other uses. 379 liked

Anyway, your call brother. Just know that should you choose to report depths in meters: The metric system is for people so dumb that they had rewrite math to make it match their fingers.
