honestly Jacob Collier isn't really that special he's just a prodigy master of melody, harmony, voicing, rhythm, has become extremely skilled in singing, drumming, piano playing, guitar, bass, other bass, and lots more, as well as maintaining a cool personality and sense of style and winning two grammys for work he did when he was 21 years old, and being recognized as the next great thing in jazz by Quincy Jones and a bunch of other really famous music guys. meh

TheFaithArtist I think that's what draws me most to his music and his presence: the fact that his love for the music absolutely dwarfs his capacity for egotism. His OVERWHELMING proficiency compensates for it. I mean think about it: if you love what you do, and can execute it masterfully, what could you possibly gain from an inflated ego?

Jacob Collier is the definition of this quote from Beethoven: "don't only practice your art, but force your way into its secrets, for it and knowledge can raise men to the divine." I can't get over how he so intentionally chooses his sounds to raise the exact emotion he wants to evoke with it.

I don't agree. Why force yourself on it when you can sit down, have a conversation that leads to friendship, which in turn leads to a two sided love. And as you grow your relationship deeper and deeper, you share more and more of yourself. Too change something you must let it change you.

There isnt much new to add to the language we call Music, you only need to learn to speak the language. By no means do i want to state that is easy, talented people like Jacob Coulier are very very rare and unique. Making Music isnt meant to be a sport where you compare yourselve to another musician so stop doing that, go explore and live your dream and enjoy the sounds which you can create in your own unique way.

There is simply one word to describe Jacob Collier: Genius. He might not like the term, necessarily, but that is what a genius "sounds" like. Music is freedom to him. There are no rules to break for a genius, only new frontiers of explorations. Music Theory stops being a limitations and it becomes a white canvas. A genius has no limitation other than his/her self, and sometimes not even that (take W.A. Mozart). Jacob, if you read this: You will only become more free in your musicality. You have a gift that VERY few have, and thank goodness it is so. Your expression has touched me profoundly, reminding me that genius still walks the earth and it is, sometimes, discovered and brought to the attention of the world. That is very refreshing to me. Thank you for sharing yourself with others. I hope your music will set a new standard in the overall industry and taste of people, because it has certainly done so with me.

I've listened to this song so many times, and everytime I hear you sing it I go through this crazy world of emotions, it's really cool. I recently lost my father, I was with him when he passed, it's been rough. But every night when I would get home from visiting dad at the hospital, I would heal my pain by turning off the lights, turning on the "star light" system in my room and pretending like I'm floating in another galaxy, it's amazing. And I thank you for that, for helping ease the pain through your musical heart. At 4:35 my life changed, those voicing and harmonies just changed my life. Thank you Jacob!

I remember discovering Jacob from an NPR clip last year. I was so impressed and hooked onto his talent. This song. This song is so incredibly and timelessly beautiful and emotional. Then I see just now that Jacob did his rendition of this song 6 months ago. Oh. My. God. Those emotions that the original brings, are different for some reason with this song. With the original, I always felt every emotion except for happiness, but with this rendition I felt those same emotions at first, which then changed to happiness.

I know your comment was 3 years ago and it might no longer be the case, but if you're still stressed daily, you're most likely leading the wrong kind of life and need to make significant changes to it fast. Overworking yourself to save money for later life is no use if you're not enjoying your youth AND you have a heart attack before 50 due to the accumulated stress which stops you from enjoying said later life...

5:50 is an incredible use of voice leading that leaves the tonicization in just four chords. To hear that structure against the diatonic changes -- in the moment of spontaneous playing -- is a definite rarity and a fine achievement in voice leading practices.

Jacob, you should cover "O Magnum Mysterium" by Morten Lauridsen....I'm sure as former boychoir member you've heard of Morten Lauriden's music...if not you should check that out and his "Lux Aeterna" and "Les Chansons de Roses" sets. Transcendentally divine writing and harmonies.

Ryan Howe oh I love that idea... How I would love what he would do to that but it wouldn't be the same... it would be something new I'm afraid, and I'm also loving the thought of what that would be...

Ryan Howe you are right - Jacob probably knows and likes the Lauridsen. The version sung at Westminster Cathedral (London) can be seen and enjoyed here: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/b99prLBmmLrTp3U.html This was recorded at a Christmas Midnight Mass celebrated by Cardinal Vincent Nichols, a few years ago. I was there - it was breath-taking.

Only Jacob Collier can change the melody, chord structures, feel, length, style, range, and even some of the lyrics of an already great song and still get away with it.
