When ThisWorkbook setting changed to Workbook gives an error Variable used an Automation type not supported in Visual Basic. Any solution?

If I unprotect it, make changes and hit save, and close the workbook - does the sheet default back to hidden-do I need to redo this process every time?

What's the purpose of Workbook_Open? Is it just to have code in order to save as *.xlsm?

Yes, exactly! You could put other code in there, but workbook_open is easy and doesn't require typing/memorizing any actual code and that's why I chose it.
