Kalibo Señor Santo Niño Ati-atihan Festival: A fusion of religious, cultural, and economic elements.
The towering Ati Higante of the Municipality of Ibajay, “Toto Kalamay” conquers the streets of Kalibo during the Higante Contest and LGU Parade considered as one of the highlight events of the week-long celebration of Kalibo Señor Santo Niño Ati-atihan Festival.Festival. Toto Kalamay was declared winner of the Higante Contest in 2023. (PIA-AKlan).
Higantes have been part and parcel of the Kalibo Santo Nino Ati-Atihan Festival ‘sadsad’ or streetdancing tradition. The earliest photos of higantes in the Ati-Atihan Festival is in the year 1963. According to our elders, they have witnessed the tradition when they were kids as early as the 1950s.
Higantes are common in Filipino traditional fiestas. It is a giant figure of people, animals or legendary characters reaching a maximum of 12 feet tall and 5 feet wide in a spectacle usually made of paper mache and other indigenous materials. A person usually goes inside the higante to control its movement.
To preserve this fading tradition, the Provincial Government of Aklan through the Provincial Tourism Office was tasked to sponsor the annual Higante Parade starting 1996. During the Higante Parade, seventeen towns of Aklan compete for the best higante based on a theme set by the Provincial Tourism Office.
