Jesse was the example of specializing in the trade secret. He didn't have the broad fundamentals and background of Gale, but he did learn the process, verbatim, from Walter. It reminds me of when I was in college and we wrote out the proofs for the various rules we used in calculus. It really separated the people in the class who could follow the rules as shown, from the people who could prove why the rules work

Remember how one of the big selling points for Walter Jesse and Mike’s cook was that “some substandard cook wouldn’t be pissing away millions of dollars in profit by wasting 25% of output per cook”? Now multiple that number by however much bigger Gus’s operation was, divide it by 25/3 and you have how much more money Gus would have made with Walter’s purity over Gale’s. Think about it like this: two cooks use the same amount of ingredients to produce 2 different batches. One is 25% purity, the other is 50% purity. That means that the guy who cooked the 50% batch got twice as much out of the cook by being twice as efficient with the ingredients. That’s where the additional money comes in. Not from making more per sale, but by making more sales out of the same ingredient/time input.
