One doubt. A building like the Pentagon, which is clearly wider than high, is therefore 22 mt tall or high? For a building I would still use tall. Am I wrong?
@SimpleEnglishVideos
@SimpleEnglishVideos Жыл бұрын
Bawakawa, you could refer to it that way, but more commonly we would still say 'high'. The Empire State building is 103 stories high, and the Pentagon is 5 stories high. - Jay

Wow! Thanks for sharing these information! 😲😲 So did I get it right that you would say: "The Eiffel Tower is tall." (since it's higher than it's wide). --> But: "The Berlin wall is high." (since it's wider than it's high) Up until know I thought that "tall" is used when describing the height of a person and "high" when describing the height of objects or plants. THANK YOU ICRDIBLY MUCH FOR FIXING MY BRAIN'S MISGUIDED ASSUMPTIONS ♥

So glad you liked it Steffi. Using tall to talk about the height of a person is an important one, so it's good you knew that. I have no idea if this link will work, but it should take you to a google page that will show you how often people search for 'How tall is the Eiffel tower' as opposed to 'How high is the Eiffel tower'. You'll see that how tall is much more common. trends.google.com/trends/explore?geo=US&q=how%20high%20is%20the%20eiffel%20tower,how%20tall%20is%20the%20eiffel%20tower When it comes to the Berlin wall though, people would be more likely to ask how tall it is, because they don't really care about it's width. They'd think of width in terms of length, so they'd probably ask 'how long is the Berlin wall?'

Hi. I don't wish to be rude, but your statement at 1.01 is wrong. Tall has nothing to do with wide. Something can be taller or shorter than something regardless of its width. "When something is higher than it's wide we say tall!!!" makes no sense. A plane in the sky is higher than it is wide (by a good few thousand feet) in no way is that plane 'tall'. 'Tall' needs contact with the ground(or another base), high has to have no contact with the ground. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/bJOjprqp2b2yqac.html

+How To Teach English Congrats on your video - I loved the creativity. I was puzzled by a statement in your video though. You said "In order for something to be high it has to have no contact with the ground'. But we have high heels, high walls, high hedges etc.
@PastTenseofBanana
@PastTenseofBanana 8 жыл бұрын
+Simple English Videos Ah but think about it. Where is your heel when wearing such shoes? They are high off the ground. We call them 'High Heel Shoes' because they make your heels high; it's not that the stiletto heel is high. When we talk about a high wall or hedge it is too far off the ground for us to get over. We can also talk about a tall wall and a tall hedge. The top of those may, also, be too high for us to get over, but the wall and hedge have contact with the ground to be tall. Think about the top of Mount Everest in my video. This is why we talk about tall trees. A high tree would be one on top of a hill (we're standing on the bottom of the hill) In all of these 'high' examples, we are stating that there is some distance between the ground (or other base) and the object (or person). High = no contact with a base. Tall = contact with a base. :) Now, about your comment "When something is higher than it's wide we say tall"? Sorry, I forgot to add: I DO like your videos. I have seen a lot of them and the idea behind them has inspired me with mine, so I appreciate your comment about my creativity (take some of the credit, please)

+How To Teach English i think that we can say both of "high" or"tall" that depend on location of them and their length compare to their width.
