I have already touched on the subject of bleaching and toning Cyanotype prints. In this video installment, I placed a focus on the difference between bleaching and toning a Cyanotype print that is high in contrast versus one that is low in contrast.
You Can Make Your Own Washing Soda by following these simple steps:
1.Turn oven on 400 degrees F.
2. Pour a thick (1/2 inch or so) layer of baking soda on the bottom of a baking dish.
3.Bake for 1 hour, stirring 1-2 times in the middle, or until it starts to look glossy/shiny.
4.Let cool and store in air-tight jar

good summary on bleaching and toning! and I specially specially like that you added the idea to take notes. it's way too easy to get creative and just forget what you were doing, specially when taking a break from the process.

By the way: pure baking soda bleaches it completely if you apply it too long. I cleaned a plate where I made some blue clusters by accident.

This is good to know. I think this technique would work well also for landscapes with cloudy skies. I hear about washing soda a lot in alternative process but I don't know what's the difference between using that and powdered clothes detergent to wash clothes.
@NicoleSmallOneonOne
@NicoleSmallOneonOne 4 жыл бұрын
i would imagine that the clothing detergent would not be as pure, (yet will bleach as the washing soda as an alternative I guess), as the plain washing soda and if you are into mixing and experimenting you would want to use materials that are as pure as possible to bring about consistency. Sometimes the alternative, even though it will perform well and do what is needed can bring about other unwanted issues.

@@NicoleSmallOneonOne I hear you, I didn't mean using Tide detergent for Prints though I was comparing the two of them with washing clothes silly lol.
@NicoleSmallOneonOne
@NicoleSmallOneonOne 4 жыл бұрын
@@Raychristofer hahaah! Did not see that one. Well one is just one of the main ingredients that the detergents are made of. You have a scent agent, color agent and a preservative added in it and to make it look pretty to use. Did i get that? heheheheheh

I wonder isn't washing soda Borax , wich can be found in most Canadian tire ,some IGA or the likes Idid use chlorine bleach ''La Parisienne diluted ''and did the job realy well
@NicoleSmallOneonOne
@NicoleSmallOneonOne 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Jacques and Happy new year to you! As for borax and washing soda, they are similar as they both can be used for cleaning laundry as well as raising alkalinity in swimming pools yet the general compound of each is not the same. They are both alkaline, washing soda having a higher alkaline value. Borax is most effective in hotter water, while washing soda is perfect at any temperature. With that being said, I guess it will boil down to whatever works out right for you/me or anyone which is the important thing. Honestly, I never had a thought of actually using the form of bleach you mentioned. Thank you for sharing as this can open options to others if they did not think of that already as some will prefer working with a powder form of bleach over a liquid form of bleach and vice versa..

Omit bleaching if contrast is low. Just tone it for a short time.
@NicoleSmallOneonOne

Yes that is also an option that can be applied. In the end, a final desired result is subjective.

Hmmm. I never thought to try peroxide for bleaching. For now the washing soda works well for me so I may stick with that option.
