This world championship showed that it wasn't all about swedes and chinese that era as some people think. And the swedes was on home soil this tournament.

Thanks very much for the upload of this legendary match. The Scandinavium was rather empty after the home favorites lost. Perssons 1st rd loss was a massive upset. Waldner lost to Saive in the semis (same one year later at the European Champs).Could have been too much partying after the Swedes won the team title... Gatien manifested himself as THE clutch player. 4/5 last matches he won in the decider. He only beat Smasonov in four! One year earlier he won his silver medal at the Olympics after three consecutive five set matches (vs Yo nam Kyu, Ding Yi, Ma Wenge). Here it is characteristic how he wins the first set (2:8 deficit) with a full on backhand showing total determination never holding back. For Saive it was the next final loss after the European Championships 92 when he lost to Rosskopf. he would have his triumph in 94! Great times for European table tennis.

Let’s be totally honest,Saive and Gatien made the game sexy....made it for all to play. Met Saive many years ago when I was a junior. Couldn’t meet a nicer,funnier bloke!! Those shorts!!!!
