Went to a music store after watching the comparisons here. I really liked the sound of the Kamaka in thre video. There were so many negative comments about the Martin, I wasn't even going to try it out. Store salesperson was all about selling me the expensive Kamaka and I was ready to make the purchase. Almost as an afterthought, I tried a couple ukes out as he was packaging the Kamaka, a wonderful instrument. When I played the $500 Martin I told the salesperson to put the Kamaka back on the wall. I bought 2 x T1Ks, low and high G. To my ear in, person, the sound was perfect. Lowered the saddle on both and I'm happy. The Kamaka played much more smoothly than the Martin, but I still chose the Martin. Not really about money nearly as much as the sound. Do yourself a favor and at least try out a T1K before buying something else. BTW, the high end Ponos sound really good, too.

Sorry to hear that... I totally understand your perspective and I respect that because I've been in similar situations long time ago. But the true is that in the future... when you have a better trained ear and much more "ukulele's knowledge" ... If that happens... only if that happens... You'd like to get one... HF-3... or something very similar and change these original black "stock strings" if you don't like them... But I agree... the T1K can be a fun instrument to play. I hope you don't take it in bad way this comment.

The Kamaka just sounds right. I feel something different than with any of the other uses....even though they are excellent instruments. For me the Kamaka has the magic.

Wow! Loved them all & especially loved the look of the aNueNue Moonbird! I think the 2nd most expensive is the Kamaka & the 2nd cheapest is the Bstock Kala "Doghair". Thank you Alex & Phil for these demos.....so interesting! I wondered if there was any way you could do a demo on one instrument of a few string brands? Maybe that’s not practical but just an idea! Thanks again. 😃

Really liked the first one KoAloha KTR-10AC Less gloss is good for the sound for my ears :) Might have liked the last one best (Kanile'a E-Silk Tenor 2018) if it didn't have such hard sounding strings on though!

That Takumi is LOUD. Kamaka HF3D sounded the best to me; Very well rounded. Followed by the Limited Edition Kanilea. Not a fan of the sound of the Blackbird.

Its difficult to get form a true opinion on KZfaq and the sound of any musical instrument is subjective. The Pono was my clear second and the small one with an almost concert size body was third. The anuenues and the Kanile’as and beautifully built and look amazing but they sound the same to me, its probably KZfaq. The Koalohas sound wonderful, I owned an Opio tenor from you for a while and it was the best sounding Uke I’ve Owned. I like plane understated good quality ukuleles, you can’t judge a Uke by its cover ( sorry about that ). I’ve changed to concert ukulele now. I don’t know if it’s my age but I like the slight reduction in string tension while having a bit more room than a sop size Uke. I enjoyed your presentation. P.s. I wasn’t influenced by you stroking the blackbird.

Well I love the look, sound and history of that Kamaka best. Very rounded even tone with those strings. The Platinum, KoAloha KTR, Bird UT3K and Blackbird Farallon, were the next best for different reasons. They are equally good depending on what look and sound you are looking for. I have a Farallon and love it. I appreciate the innovation and use of natural materials other than wood, to make available a high end instrument with an equally good, but unique sound. It's a little heavier than your typical light wood build, but it's very responsive, solid feel and excellent playability which is very important. For me, a much more worry free instrument as far as humidity, temperature and durability goes. I can leave it out and I could pretty much play it anywhere I chose. Also, because of the construction I believe they sound even better plugged in, though I have yet to try. All of these tenors have something to recommend, depending on what you are looking for at a certain price point. I think the Kala is good value and put along side instruments at that price point, it would excel. Also strings can have a significant impact on sound. Everybody's opinion is different on strings depending on the sound you are looking for. Personally I think tha Kamaka and Silk would benefit from a string change, others might disagree. Keep up the good work.

Clive G that was well put Clive. Over the years I’ve become known as the string guy here at SUS and I have resisted doing a video so far because it’s such a can of worms talking about what strings suit what instrument!
@clivegilbert8211
@clivegilbert8211 6 жыл бұрын
Yes I agree, it's very individual with strings. Even doing a video of different sets of strings with the same instrument, will not benefit anyone other than maybe the players who have that particular Uke. Also the feel of the strings are very important to some people and hard to put accross without trying yourself. I don't particularly like thick nylon strings, which I think the Kamaka has. The tone seems great with Kamaka stock strings, but I would change out to get better feel and projection, but that's just me. I think it's worth trying out different string sets if a particular Uke doesn't have the sound or even feel. It can be like night and day. I know it's a personal thing, but which of these instruments do you as the string guy think would benefit most? Players really have to experiment themselves though. It's easy for someone to recommend X, Y &Z from their experience of what they like on a particular Uke, but this is not your experience. So experimentation is the only way, if you want to change the sound and feel with the strings to what YOU like.

I ripped the audio and made a playlist of each uke so I could rapid fire compare between them and rank accordingly. Labeled 1 through 12 in order of appearance in the video. To my ear the best by a slim margin because it sounds warm yet has the definition of a steel string acoustic guitar: 3 All equally good: 8 > 1 (harp like) > 2 > 4 Mediocre: 11 > 12 > 7 > 9 (leaning toward bad) Bad, dischordant or otherwise harsh: 6 > 5 > 10 (awful)

Hello there, Please illustrate me, I have been playing the guitar for all my life but I am completely new to Ukeleles, I don't seem to find high end Ukeleles that are electro acoustic, is there such a thing?
@SouthernUkuleleStore
@SouthernUkuleleStore 4 жыл бұрын
From approximately £400 up you see very few options - beyond that price it is much more common to have a pickup Installed in a high end ukulele by a luthier or a specialist like us or the ukulele site. I think the reason for this is the high end Ukulele gigging market being smaller than the guitar market for the same thing and the choice of high end pickups being especially slim. In this respect the Ukulele is much more like the classical guitar where you will find much more of the same thing. With a steel string acoustic it's thicker and bigger and a pickup is something that feels more easily concealed- on classical Guitar and Ukuleles the tops are thin and the instrument is more fragile I suppose they get treated slightly more delicately by the end user so manufacturers don't fit quite so many pickups. For what it's worth, we fit about 2-3 a week so more than happy to have that conversation if you fall in love with a uke on the site.

@SouthernUkuleleStore
@SouthernUkuleleStore 4 жыл бұрын
I'd get a Kanile'a. Imagine that.yoir budget for the pickup will be about £170 - ($190 roughly) The Kanile'a ukes take pickups well because the bridge design is enclosed. Look at KCS-T or KSR-T models... We ship pretty much worldwide for free over £1000. Just have a look on our site at the variety in stock and contact us at alex@ukulele.co.uk for a quote that includes pickup installation.
