Test run of a high energy flash lamp that was made in the 1970s #shorts
Helical lamps like this are obsolete for even flashlamp pumped lasers, so they are rarely made any more and are thus very difficult to find. Linear flashlamps are almost always a better option in driving solid state lasers. Not only are linear lamps more efficient for pumping laser media, they also have significantly lower inductance than a helical lamp. That being said, it is hard to top the beauty of these old helical lamps.

For anyone who hasn't seen the ruby laser video yet: The thing you saw explode wasn't actually a target, this laser is so stupidly powerful that it annihilated the lense even though it absorbs almost no energy from the laser that went through it.

If I remember that's the lens exploding, actually. Even though it has a low absorbance to the energy passing through it the laser is so powerful that the tiny fraction is absolutely enough to do damage. The slow motion shows the flash and fire coming off the other side of the lens as an added bonus.

Hello. I asked you once already in another video, but since you made a whole video solely about the lamp, I am going to ask once more here: Where did you manage to get this flash lamp? Not that I would buy it at this point, both because of my low budget and its rarity, but I'm still quite curious. Thank you for your answer in advance and for all the inspiration you have given me. Have a nice day.

@@styropyroshorts I wrote a reply but it probably got removed because I included a link, website names or country names in it... I apologize if this is a problem on my side and this message gets duplicated. That's what I thought, I look for most of these things on eBay as well. But as you said, there are no helical xenon lamps of this size to be found. If I may give you a tip, try looking at Eastern-European auction sites (I'll try to mention their names in a following reply) from time to time as well - without much of a struggle, I managed to find a GU-81m pentode for half the price including shipping to the Czech Republic (I don't think that shipping to the USA is terribly expensive, as well), not to mention that it's fairly possible for you to find things of some rarity. Indeed, the sellers don't speak English, most of the time, but an internet translator takes care of this problem just fine.
@PulsedPower
@PulsedPower 2 жыл бұрын
@@ralokossovo7906 I recently bought some GU-81Ms for $35 USD each on eBay but they shipped from Ukrain. How does that compare to the price you got them for? Also, I would be interested in some of the Eastern European sites you are referring to. Try spelling them with spaces between each letter, or underscores.

@@PulsedPower I'm sorry, I really can't post the names in here. I even tried encoding them in Base64 alongside other text and the comment still got removed not a minute after I posted it. Either the KZfaq algorithm is messing with it or Styro keeps deleting it (I don't think he does - why should he). Do you have an e-mail address or some other messaging platform ID where I could contact you? I can send mine if you want.

Xenon lamps are so cool! Fun fact, xenon lamps are what they use to power the current DLP Digital projectors at movie theaters! They cost around $10,000 and get so hot that just the oil from one fingerprint can cause them to explode when at temp. We used thick welding cloves and lots of PPE when hot swapping them!

i used to work on a flash anneal system in semiconductor production. it had thirty 18-inch xenon tubes. The power supply in the subfab was the size of a U-Haul box truck and you could feel it discharge from 20 feet away. zero of the light was visible as it had multiple layers of protection/security, but it would wrinkle a wafer like a pringles chip.
