I can recommend 500 days of summer. Similar premise as High Fidelity. Unreliable narrator man child that blames other people for his problems. It’s a reverse fairy tale where the man needs saving or it’s just beauty and the beast :)

Not resigned just to that era in time specifically, but there was definitely a big influx of stories at the time about entitled manchildren who were angry at the world, 'too cool for school' and thought they knew better than anyone but were too arrogant and unfocused to do anything with their lives. Maybe, but in this case I feel like because the makers of the movie knew Chicago so well they were able to capture it in a way they just wouldn't have been able to if it was somewhere more unfamiliar. Chicago itself becomes a character in this movie.

It's not just true of America though, almost every time any country adapts another countries work they change the setting (did you know there was an It's Always Sunny in Philidelphia set in Russia?). I think America is just guily of it most often because they make the most stuff.

I never understood that. I get when movies in different languages get an “Americanized” adaptation since not every enjoys reading subtitles, but British movies are already in English.

Oh God me too. I became the quintessential ‘lad chick’ and every guys dream. I was into football (played for ladies Queens Park Rangers), ate burgers drunk beer etc and went to my boyfriends every Everton Game in the Premiership. Also refused to listen to music unless it was vinyl. I literally lived for Nick Hornby by lapping up Fever Pitch and on a more light hearted note About a Boy. Needless to say it didn’t end well.

That’s fantastic. I’ve known too many tw*ts like the one in this movie (never read the book cause the movie made me angry enough) and honestly they should all be booted off the face of the earth.

Same here. I think that's why I prefer the movie to the book: Cusack's Rob is a manchild, but he starts to see it by the end. Not completely, not perfectly, but he's on the right path. He's a good pairing with Scott Pilgrim, really, and I felt that the endings weren't "they got everything they ever wanted" but more: "They were set on the path towards their goals and it's on them to succeed or fail."

This is why I'm torn about this sort of thing (and about Dom's take). Along with Fight Club, American Beauty and a few others this is one of those movies about toxic masculinity from the late 90s and early 2000s that was very formative for me. They were movies by dudes for dudes and the message was, to me, very clear: you see this guy doing the cool stuff you daydream about? Well, he's an asshole and so are you, but it's not too late to get over it. It was... really a theme there for a while. BUT much as that was what I took from all of those back then, I'd also recognize that about 50% of the people who engaged with them just... didn't pick up on the irony. You've seen them. The dudebros that think, despite all evidence, that Tyler Durden was the hero of that story and that this is a "romantic comedy" about a charismatic lead getting the girl and so on. It really spoils the whole thing a bit. But at the same time I tihnk it's a shame that we don't get as many movies like these now. Good examples aren't the best morality plays. It seems that these days either you get horrific crap that, as Dom said, doesn't acknowledge the toxicity at all or squeaky clean idealized versions of masculinity. We don't acknowledge toxic dudes as human beings, which is a big part of toxic masculinity, for the record, and a driver of both the crap politics of our era and male mental health issues. Don't get me wrong, I love having a more female-centric view available. That was genuinely rare 20 years ago. But at the same time I think this and other films about this sort of thing were really good at roping in the patient zero dudes and they *did* successfully reach some of them. Hell, I'm no serial heartbreaker, but I was certainly a cocky dickhead who strutted around telling people how to fix the world and being a pseudointellectual edgelord and I remember walking out of Fight Club and just... walking around in circles thinking about my whole deal for a long time. It was an important moment. Took me maybe twenty more years to start figuring out how to actually slightly curb it and as this post shows it's still a struggle... but it helped.

I'm from the Chicago suburbs, and this movie/review wasn't selling me on watching it, but that description is a bit more tempting.

Also from Chicago and I think the film is best viewed as a landscape of the people and places of my city in around 2000. Rob and the other characters are utterly recognizable as people you'd casually know in and around record stores or comic stores or the club scene at the time. Therefore I've got no interest in the book because Rob's character arc isn't the main point of the film for me.

But I'd argue that this film also interrogates people who identify with Rob and ultimately challenges them to do better.

It seems like Dom assumes that the intention is that we identify with or like Rob but its really clear that the film doesn't and his apotheosis is the point where he turns to camera and admits "I am a fucking asshole." I've never read the book so I don't know how that reads differently. I do know Cusak once remarked that women love the movie because we laugh and regard it as men revealing that they know how shitty they can be. I don't know about that, but I do think the film doesn't really want us to emulate Rob or think he's a hero.

@@angeliprimlani9389 I think that Dom has fallen into a usual trap when critiquing: books and films about bad people doesn't mean that the author or consumer approves their behaviour. We know that Rob is a shitty guy but we follow his story to see if he can grow as person, in which case he can have a redemption arc (which happens in the film, I never read the book), or he learns nothing and it serves as a cautionary tale. That whole 'identifying with a protagonist' thing has never sit right with me.

I think it's the birthday thing. From my understanding, it is traditional at least among people of a certain age range that on your birthday you should go to a pub and let it be known that you will be going to that pub so people can come and buy you drinks. This has the potential to be agonizingly embarrassing for all involved, since it creates a whole dance of who should come who should not come, alcohol gets involved, etc.

If you haven't heard, on his Patreon he plugged a new project where, among other things, he 'complains more about High Fidelity', so it might be contained there. As a potential suggestion, at one point the author apparently felt that the setting of the story was quasi-integral TO the story, claiming the book was 'about' London, so it might be a matter of a bunch of fairly specific references and points for people to be pretentious about that Dom, being from the UK, is more used to hearing and therefore has less patience for. ie, in the book, Laura is a lawyer, and as I recall there are two 'classes' of lawyers in the UK, so maybe Rob takes some potshots at her for being 'the bad one'. Or specifically noting that 'character X is from neighborhood/region Y, so you know what THAT means...', THESE British Bands from the 80's are cool, while these AMERICAN bands are overplayed, the ritual of birthdays that Elizabeth notes, etc. To condense all that: maybe the details of the story's Britishness mostly just further highlighted the dickishness of the main character.
