In this fly tying tutorial Fulling Mill Technical Manager Steve Carew ties the Balloonhammer Caddis.
Originally designed by Roman Moser, its been tweaked a few times since first being tied. This is an excellent caddis dry pattern, most especially when trout and grayling are feeding on adult bugs.
Due to its Ultra Dry Yarn underwing and Bug Foam "balloon" at the top, it floats both high and long without getting submerged. This is also a great pattern to use if you're fishing a dry dropper as it can suspend nymphs well even in the smaller sizes.
This caddis pattern is tied using our new Tactical SF Dub, Ultra Dry Dub, Bug Foam and Ultra Dry Yarn. These materials were all purpose built for tying dry flies, and you'll soon see why. If you'd like to buy the hooks, dubbing and other fly tying materials to tie this fly you can find them here:
