After the disappointment after looking at some of the5G antennas available I decided to make my own. Long time viewers of this channel may recognise the design.

Very nice piece of work, Andrew. While the frequency dependent reflectance (S11) that you have shown is a key parameter of the antenna the actual gain of the antenna (relative to isotropic) and the spatial distribution of that gain are also interesting and important. Can you provide any information on measurements of this antenna? NEC and other simulations are good yet nothing beats a solid measurement if available.

Great build, unsure why you would need an antenna for this though. 5G is short range due to high frequency and 4G fallback is available. 750MHz 4G is great due to speed and the low frequency means propagation is fantastic. Love to see some practical build designs for this. Thanks Andrew, your builds are always great and informative on techniques.

5G is particularly bad at penetrating buildings, given such a high frequency. I built these because I can't very well stick my gateway with internal receivers out in the rain, but this can sit nicely atop a short mast on the roof.

Well 4G gives me about 1.2 MBit/sec evening time (not great, practically useless) and 5G runs on about 40 MBit/sec but if I close the window the 5G dissapears. Im on a loft and I can clearly see the 2 5G masts. One is about half kilometer the other is 300 meters away. It was all fine from spring to this point in time even with closed windows or even behind a wall. About 3 days ago everything changed so I have to make some external antenna for my CPE pro 2 which doesnt even has an external antenna connector... :(

Thank you for sharing your knowledge and experience. I can confirm the antennas DOES WORK! Made 2 of them and connect to my TCL hh500e 5G router. In the property I live in with router internal antennas I get good 4G signal and I am in the periphery of 5G. In this case I get around 15Mb/s on 4G mode and around 25 on 5G mode. I made the antennas and when connected - 4G mode 70Mb/s, 5G mode 150Mb/s. And there is no direct view to the mast which is nearly 1mile away. Also the antennas are next to the router indoors as I can't place them outdoors due to restrictions. It is hard to find good quality 50ohm cable in UK which is not very expensive. The antenna is well worth the effort though. Thank you!

Congrats, I just building one for myself to work with huawei cpe router (attached to main port, div port not plugged), unfortunately something went wrong, and it's not working at all :|. My issue is that my router don't see 5g network when indoor, when I put it outside the window it works great, it seems that glass is impenetrable barrier for 5g signal. The idea was to put the antenna outside through the gap in the window (connected via aprox. 2m length cable / 2mm diameter). Does you setup works with single antenna or is it required to use 2 ?

Thanks for this Andrew. Is there any chance you could explain the calculations used to determine the size of the parts and the positioning of the feed hole. With this info one is in a better position to play knowing what changes are likely to do what. Building to a recipe is fine but understanding the basics enable one to come up with new recipes that are more likely to work than they are without the information.

probably a silly question but could something like this be used for bouncing the 5G signals toward your property? In other words not connected to anything but used solely as a bouncer and director of the 5G signals obviousley the radiator would not be needed. I want something that will take the signals from the 5G tower about 800M away from my flat and then bounce those signals directly into my window of my flat.

tried the same with aluminium can absolutely not get the tin to stick on the reflector, using a heat gun and everything, the alu even started to smoke, but tin would just drop of like droplets... my guess is it's because my tin is with lead and the alu is andonized as well, did try to sand it though. but I guess i'll get some lead free and untreated aluminium.
@jeffs555cc
@jeffs555cc Жыл бұрын
You can solder to bare aluminum with tin/lead solder. However, the problem is that aluminum oxidizes so easily and solder won't stick to aluminum oxide. You need to clean down to bare aluminum and then somehow keep any oxygen from getting to the aluminum while you heat it. There are special aluminum soldering fluxes you can get, or some people say to coat the aluminum with oil before heating. Another technique(the one I use) is to build up a puddle of solder on the aluminum. The aluminum oxidizes under the puddle so it doesn't stick, but while still heating, use a sharp probe or sharp soldering tip to scrape away the oxidation under the puddle. The solder puddle will roll around on flat aluminum oxide layer so I often press a small dimple in the aluminum to keep it in place until I scrape away the oxidation.

I will make the model in a 4*4 way because my router has 4 5g ports and I will put it in one box and I will put it On a plate of 120 cm and it will be very strong and mighty. I need you to explain some concepts. 1- Can I change the nylon screws and do they have an alternative? 2- Is the large piece isolated from the rest of the pieces? 3- Is there any left? The whole pieces are connected to each other? 4- Can I use anything other than nylon? I promise to photograph the entire work for you. I have very strong previous experiences, but this work will be imaginary. dealing with you.

@andrewmcneil
@andrewmcneil 2 жыл бұрын
@@divyamohan8442 Not at this level, yes copper is a better conductor than aluminium and silver is a better conductor than copper. But to try and measure the difference in the performance of an antenna you would need some very expensive equipment. And in the real world of what we use them for it would not make any difference. In fact, if you go into any professional RF lab you would find most of their reference antennas are made from brass. Reason being it is more durable and harder than copper and does not tarnish like copper.
