Thank you very much for this comment. Depends on the state, some state's laws are very clear. Other are subject to interpretation....In 2015, Kevin Dodd, chief enforcement officer for the Alabama Department of Conservation’s law enforcement division at the time, stated that scouting with a drone was no different than scouting from a truck or ATV. You cannot use it while hunting but for scouting it was within the Alabama regulations. Those statement were, of course, prior to thermal drones being more accessible. But the laws remain the same. Thermal drones are still cost prohibitive for the average guy but becoming more affordable and available. We(pilots like me) also use these drones to survey a property and understand the deer population(number, male/female, quality of bucks, fawns, bedding, food sources)....that intel can help the hunter/landowner take care of his herd and keep it in balanced. I look at it this way, its like having(or renting) an expensive network of trail cams....you get all the same info just better/faster.

Yep, some states allow deer recovery with a drone, those same states usually allow scouting too. No state allows hunting with the aid of a drone.

I'm using the JZ T30 spotlight. I find that I need to be below 250ft AGL to get enough light to the ground for a good enough image to identify doe versus buck. Lower if I want a clean enjoyable image. You can't always compare my altitude in these videos as, at least in the case of this video, I may have taken off from a lower altitude and the the screen altitude indicator may not be a true indication of my AGL altitude at that spot. Also, you probably know this but it can be extra annoying at night when fighting with the light, make sure you are above the 7.0X transition to the Tele lens....it cleans up nice at 7.0+ but still requires enough light.

Thank you for the kind words. Means a lot! For best results with the light in the wind, line the drone up with a perfect headwind(using the wind direction indicator). The wind arrow should be 180 degree to your heading. This will ensure your light stays as centered as possible and also that you don't run out of gimbal down angle. I try to use this trick as much as possible if the tree cover/obstructions allow.
